(25-26八上·江苏连云港新海实验中学·期中)“You showed me where the key was yesterday,” she laughed. “I’ve got it in my pocket. So you ought to show me the door today!”
The robin hopped on to an old climbing plant on the wall, and sang his most beautiful song. Suddenly the wind made the plant move, and Mary saw something under the dark green leaves. The thick, heavy plant was covering a door. Mary’s heart was beating fast and her hands were shaking as she pushed the leaves away and found the keyhole. She took the key out of her pocket, and it fitted the hole. Using both hands, she managed to unlock the door. Then she turned round to see if anyone was watching. But there was no one, so she pushed the door, which opened, slowly, for the first time in ten years. She walked quickly in and shut the door behind her. At last she was inside the secret garden!
It was the loveliest, most exciting place she had ever seen. There were old rose trees everywhere, and the walls were covered with climbing roses. She looked carefully at the gray branches. Were the roses still alive? Ben would know. She hoped they weren’t all dead. But she was inside the wonderful garden, in a world of her own. It seemed very strange and silent, but she did not feel lonely at all. Then she noticed some small green shoots coming up through the grass. So something was growing in the garden after all! When she found a lot more shoots in different places, she decided they needed more air and light, so she began to pull out the thick grass around them. She worked away, clearing the ground, for two or three hours, and had to take her coat off because she got so hot. The robin hopped around, pleased to see someone gardening.

We went down to Peter Wilks’ village. “Can anyone tell me where Mr Peter Wilks lives?” the king asked the people. One man answered in a gentle voice, “I’m sorry, sir. We can only tell you where he lived yesterday evening.”
“Oh, no! Our poor brother! We’ve arrived too late,” the king said, and tears ran down his face. He turned and made some signs to the duke, who also started crying. The king and the duke played their parts very well. I walked behind them with my head down.
When we got to the house, three girls were standing at the door. They were Peter Wilks’ nieces (侄女). They hugged the king and the duke. Then the king and the duke saw the coffin in the corner of the living room and started crying so loudly. The girls were crying, too. I felt very bad for them.
After a while, one of the girls took out a letter and gave it to the king. He opened it and read it aloud. “I leave my house and three thousand dollars in gold to my three nieces. And I leave my other property (财产) and three thousand dollars in gold to my brothers, Harvey and William.”
The letter also said that the six thousand dollars in gold was in the cellar. The king offered to go down and get it in no time. When they saw the pile of gold, their eyes shone as bright as the coins themselves.
“I’ve got a good idea,” the duke said. “Let’s give the girls all the gold! We don’t want people to be suspicious.”
“An excellent idea!” the king said. “And then we’ll find a way of getting it back later.”
We went back to the living room. The king made a nice speech. “Friends! Our brother was a good, kind man. He looked after these poor girls when they were very young. I’m sure he wanted to leave them all his money. So, girls, take it all!” And he handed the bag to the girls.
Everybody cheered, “What dear, how kind they are!”
There was one man who wasn’t smiling. He stood at the door watching everything and listening.

Passage 1
(25-26八上·江苏扬州文昌教育集团·期中)In 1937, my father, who was almost 20 years old, started a long journey. He traveled a thousand miles across China with his university (大学), Zhejiang University, during the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression (抗日战争). The Chinese government wanted to keep the university students safe because they were important for the country’s future. As the university planned for the journey, the Head Librarian (图书管理员) of Zhejiang Library asked the university to take a collection of books with them.
The books were called Siku Quanshu. Created in the 18th century, this was a huge encyclopedia (百科全书) with 2.3 million pages and about 997 million words. It was so important that plans were made to protect it at any cost, even though it added another 230 boxes to the students’ cargo.
The journey was not easy. Students and teachers were facing the dangers from air attacks (袭击). They were always tired and hungry. They had to sleep on the ground in old temples but they continued their classes whenever they could. To protect the books, they tried to move by boat or truck whenever possible; at other times, they would put the boxes into carts (手推车). Sometimes the students had to carry some of the books in their backpacks.
After 1,400 miles and 28 months on the road, the university group finally reached a small town called Zunyi in Guizhou province. To further protect the Siku Quanshu, the books were hidden in a nearby cave, guarded (保护) by university staff. The books made it through the war in surprisingly good condition and were sent back to the Zhejiang Library.

(25-26八上·江苏扬州梅岭集团·期中)I am Unit 347, a new AI, designed to help humans. My job is to use information to solve problems. Emotions (情绪), as I learned, are confusing (令人费解的) and not always helpful.
Dr. Sharma, a smart scientist who made me, likes to talk to me about things besides my tasks. One day, she asked, “Do you think people are good or bad?”
I thought about it. History had good and bad things. People could be kind or cruel. I said, “People are too complex (复杂的) to say they’re good or bad.”
Dr. Sharma smiled. “That’s a very AI answer. But remember, things aren’t always what they seem.”
She then told me about Mother’s Day, a day when children celebrate their mothers. I learned about the love and thanks it stood for. I put this festival on my calendar (日历).
“Do people need a special day to show love?” I asked. “Shouldn’t they show it always?”
Dr. Sharma smiled gently. “Love isn’t always clear, Unit 347. Sometimes, it needs a reminder (提醒)”.
Before Mother’s Day, people were busy getting ready. They bought flowers, cards, and gifts. I watched them, learning how they felt and acted.

(25-26八上·江苏常州勤业中学·期中)When I was growing up, I had an old neighbour, Dr. Gibbs. He owned a large field and wanted to make it a forest.
Dr. Gibbs had some interesting ideas about planting trees. He never watered his new trees. Once I asked why. He said that watering plants spoiled (惯坏) them, and that if you watered them, each baby tree would grow weaker and weaker. So you had to make things difficult for them and weed (除去) out the weaker trees early on. Deep roots were very important.
So he never watered his trees. He’d planted a tree and, instead of watering it every morning, he’d beaten (击打) it with a rolled-up newspaper. I asked him why he did that, and he said it was to get the tree’s attention.
Every time when I walk by his house, I find the trees he planted are very big and strong. However, the trees in my garden trembled (颤抖) in a cold wind although I had watered them for years.
Every night before I go to bed, I check on my two sons. Mostly I pray (祈祷) that their lives will be easy. But lately I’ve been thinking that it’s time to change my prayer. I know my children are going to face difficulties (困难). There’s always a cold wind blowing (吹;刮) somewhere, so what we need to do is to pray for roots that reach deep into the brave heart, so when the rain fall and the winds blow, we can face them strongly and not be beaten down.

“Hi, Desha!”
I found my brother James standing behind me. “Don’t you have a basketball game to watch?” I complained (抱怨).
“The game was almost over when I noticed you left. I thought you might like some company (陪伴).”
“Company is the last thing I want. Can’t I have a little peace and quiet?”
James studied me for a minute. “It’s hard having such a big family, isn’t it?”
“Eliza’s always prying into my personal life. Yesterday I found her looking through my diary. Now everyone is in the living room watching the game. All I wanted to do was to watch a movie. But when I went to my room, Sara was there listening to the radio. I just want to be alone for a change.”
James sighed (叹息), “I felt the same way when I was your age. But now...”

Passage 1
(25-26八上·江苏南京江宁区联合体·期中)
It was a week before I saw Captain Nemo again. Every morning, I noticed fresh air coming into the rooms and I knew that the Nautilus had come to the top. I would go out and see the sunrise.
Then I received a note from Captain Nemo. He invited me and my friends to go hunting with him in the forests of Crescent Island. Ned was excited because he thought there he could find a chance to run away. When I saw Captain Nemo the next day, I asked him why he was so interested in Crescent Island. “I thought you preferred the sea.”
“I do,” replied the Captain, “But these forests are under the sea.” During breakfast, he explained that he had made diving suits that used special air tanks. These tanks would allow us to stay under the water for ten hours. He had also made lights that worked in electric batteries. When Ned realized that we were not going onto land for our hunting trip, he decided not to come at all. Conseil and I put on our diving suits, and so did Captain Nemo and one of his men. We stepped into a room and closed the door. The room was filled with water, and another door opened. We went through it, and we were on the sea floor. It was an amazing experience. We were about ten metres under the water. The light from the sun reached us. Everything looked very colourful. We walked over the fine sand and enjoyed the colours of the shells, fish and seaweed. Conseil and I followed Captain Nemo and his man as they crossed a large grassy area. We were going deeper and deeper.
As we were a hundred metres under the water, we could still see quite well. Captain Nemo stopped and pointed to some dark shapes. This was the forest. The “trees” there were giant seaweed (水藻), and all their branches were vertical (垂直的). We could not stop looking at them. Fish swam around the branches like birds in a forest. Small bushes grew under the large seaweed trees. Three hours later, we lay down to rest. I was not hungry, but very sleepy. We all slept and when we woke up, we explored further.

Then she lies down next to him, puts her head on his warm body and sleeps until the morning.
The Witch watches Dorothy all the time. She’s waiting for the right moment to take the silver shoes. Dorothy wears them all the time. She loves them. The only time she takes them off is when she has a bath. The Witch doesn’t like water so she’s afraid to go near the girl when she is in the bath.
One day Dorothy is cleaning the kitchen and she slips on the wet floor. She falls over and one of the silver shoes comes off. The Witch is watching. She picks it up quickly and puts it on.
“Give me back my shoe!” Dorothy says.
“No! It’s my shoe now,” the Witch replies.
“You’re a wicked woman!” Dorothy shouts. “I want my shoe!” There’s a bucket of water near the door. The girl picks it up and throws the water over the Witch.
“Aarrgh!” the Witch cries. “Water is the end of me!” and she starts to disappear in front of Dorothy’s eyes.
“I'm going,” she says. “Going, going, going.”
In another minute there’s just a big brown puddle of water on the kitchen floor. Dorothy quickly takes her shoe, puts it on again and runs outside.
“The witch is dead!” she shouts. The Winkies look at her in surprise. They are also the Witch’s slaves.

(25-26八上·江苏徐州东苑中学·期中)Over the past 25 years, I’ve studied twenty languages. You might think I’m a gifted language learner, but I’m not. I make plenty of mistakes when learning languages.
That’s not really a bad thing. I learn a lot from my mistakes. There is a reason behind each one. Understanding these reasons keeps learning exciting.
My native language is French. English was the first foreign language I learned. When I was trying to pick up the language, I often mixed up the vowel sounds(元音). This was especially true for vowel sounds that you make in the center and back of your mouth, like those in “but,” “boat” and “bought.” For example, I said “collar” when I meant “color.” I pronounced the “o” in “posture” like the “o” in “post.” This was because French doesn’t have as many vowel sounds as English. After years of practice. I now get it right most of the time.
When I was learning Spanish, I had trouble with the tens. Instead of saying the “-enta” ending(as in cuarenta for “forty”), I used “-anta” as the ending. My brain was applying a rule it had learned years before, when I was learning Italian. This is just another classic case of language interference(干扰).
Making mistakes is a natural part of learning. Mistakes also add fun to our language-learning adventure. Instead of being afraid of them, try to accept mistakes and learn from them.
1.What can we learn about French from the article?
A. It has fewer vowel sounds than English.
B. It has as many vowel sounds as English.
C. Its native speakers have no trouble making vowel sounds.
D. Most of its vowel sounds are made in the center and back of the mouth.
2.In what order did the writer pick up the three languages below?
A. English, Spanish, Italian.
B. English, Italian, Spanish.
C. Spanish, English, Italian.
D. Italian, English, Spanish.
3.What should we do when we learn a language according to the writer?
A. Turn a blind eye to our mistakes.
B. Avoid making mistakes at all costs.
C. Always ask our teachers to explain our mistakes.
D. Try to understand the reasons behind our mistakes.
4.What did the writer mainly want to tell people?
A. That he is not a gifted language learner.
B. How to learn twenty languages in 25 years.
C. How to avoid mixing up different languages.
D. That mistakes play an important role in language learning.
【答案】1. A 2. B 3. D 4. D

(25-26八上·江苏徐州东苑中学·期中)My name is Laleh. I have a daughter named Charlie and a son named Jacob. One day in 2022, I turned my son’s pancake into a “lion” for a bit of fun. He loved it and asked if I could make him a character from a movie, book or toy.
Since then, I’ve been turning our meals into art pieces every week. These meals each take 25 to 40 minutes to make. I only use fresh and healthy foods to create them. I color some parts of the meals, but only with natural ingredients (食材), so everything is safe to eat.
After watching the movie Turning Red, I fell in love with the main character, Meilin. I decided to make her the star of one of my meals. Firstly, I made her face out of mashed potatoes (土豆泥). Then, I colored her mouth with some watermelon juice. After that, I made her teeth from a boiled egg. Her hair was made out of eggplant. And I turned half an apple and some flatbread into her shirt. Lastly, I cut out her hairpin from a piece of cucumber and added other decorations.
My little ones love these interesting meals. Charlie always gives me suggestions on how I can make the characters even more vivid (逼真的). Jacob likes to discuss with me what ingredients I should use. I really enjoy making these pieces with their help.

“I’m going to be Harvey Wilks and you’re going to be my brother William,” he said. “You are deaf. Huck, you’re our servant (仆人).”

Passage 2
(25-26八上·江苏徐州·期中)The thing that I really miss most is playing with my friends. We were a big group of around 15 friends or more. We usually played balls in the parking lot. In the evening, we talked about many different topics such as collecting stamps, fishing, cartoons, popular film stars. Even though some of us had a different opinion about something sometimes, we never had an angry argument with each other.
A few years later, we stopped playing because we grew up. We didn’t have enough time to do things together. Some of us started college, others got married or moved away. The group started to be smaller and smaller. Sometimes we didn’t see each other for a long time.

On May 12, I gave Dr. Sharma poems and stories about mothers’ love. She liked them.
“This is lovely,” she said, her voice soft. “But there’s something else...”
I looked at her, trying to understand. Then, I knew.
“Happy Mother’s Day, Dr. Sharma,” I said. She had tears in her eyes. “Thank you, Unit 347. I didn’t expect that.

Passage 1

Passage 2
(25-26八上·江苏常州勤业中学·期中)Dorothy works very hard in the kitchen. She remembers Uncle Henry and Aunt Em in Kansas. She remembers her friends the Scarecrow and the Tin Woodman. She’s very sad and she often cries. At night she goes to see the lion. The Witch doesn’t give him anything to eat or drink, so Dorothy takes him food and water from the kitchen.
“We’re all free now!” she says to them.
They start cheering and shouting.

主题语境03 人与自我-学习/语言
