Unit 1 Cultural Heritage Period 1 Listening and Speaking
Take part in a youth project
Name: _______________ Class: _______________ Date: _______________
Ⅰ. Learning Aims
1. Understand the interview about the Mount Tai youth camp and get the main idea and key details (who, what, why, how).
2. Use context clues (explanation, example, synonym / antonym) to work out new words while listening.
3. Talk about cultural heritage protection and give your own opinions.
【Key Point】
Catch the key information in the interview: what the project is, who is doing it, why they do it, and how they do it. This is the main task of this lesson — you will practise it through several listening rounds.
【Difficult Point】
Guess new words from context. When you meet preserve, promote, and cypress, try to work them out from the words around them, not from a dictionary.
Ⅱ. Before You Start
(1) Learn the new words
Write down their Chinese meanings on the lines.
1. cultural heritage ____________________ 2. preserve ____________________ 3. promote ____________________
4. relic ____________________ 5. temple ____________________ 6. cypress ____________________
7. app ____________________ 8. tip ____________________ 9. youth project ____________________
(2) Listening skill — guessing words from context
When a new word comes up, don't stop. Keep listening and look at the words around it:
· The speaker may explain it right after (that is... / which means...)
· The speaker may give an example (such as... / like...)
· There may be a synonym or antonym nearby.
Ⅲ. Listening and Speaking
1. Lead-in — look and talk
Open your book to Page 4. Look at the opening picture. Talk with your partner about:
(1) What is the place in the picture? What do you know about it?
(2) Why do you think there is a gate and two children in the picture?
(3) How can we pass our cultural heritage on to young people?
2. First listening — get the main idea
Listen to the interview once. You don't need to catch every word — just get the general idea. Then choose the best title:
A. Students from different countries are working creatively to protect a temple in China.
B. Youths from seven countries are working together to protect cultural relics on Mount Tai.
C. Doing a project on cultural heritage protection in China is interesting and exciting.
After listening: discuss with your partner — which words helped you decide? (e.g. place names, numbers, key verbs)
3. Second listening — catch key details
Listen again. This time, focus on details. Answer the questions briefly.
【Key point】Pay attention to who is doing what, why, and how.
(1) What are the students doing on Mount Tai?
(2) Why are they making the app? What will it be used for?
(3) What have they done to make the app? Write down at least two things.
4. Third listening — take notes
Listen again. Help the reporter finish the interview notes. Write one word or number in each blank.
【Key point】This is the most important step. Listen carefully for who, what, when, how many.
(1) We're part of ________________________________________.
(2) There are ________________ senior high school students from ________________ countries.
(3) Mount Tai is one of the most ________________ mountains in China.
(4) The mountain and temples have been ________________ for over 3,000 years. It shows how people ________________ their cultural heritage. We feel so ________________ to get this chance.

(7) There are 22 ________________ and about 1,800 ________________ with writing on them.
5. Fourth listening — guess new words
Listen again. Think about how you worked out preserve, promote, and cypress. Tick (√) the clue that helped you.
【Difficult point】Use the guessing skills you practised before class. Look at the words around each new word.

preserve
promote
cypress
I know what kind of thing it is.
The speaker explained it right after.
There was an opposite word nearby.
There was a similar word nearby.
I already knew the word roughly.
The speaker gave an example.
6. Retell the news
Now use what you heard to finish the news report. One word per blank.
