Three people were sitting around a table in a restaurant in Brazil. How much do you think each of them tipped(给小费)? The British asked. “It’s common to tip 10 percent, right?” The American woman cried. “Oh, I was planning to leave 20 percent!” And the Chinese asked. “What’s a tip?”
Although it is not a custom to tip in China, tipping is a big deal in Western countries. When travelling to countries like the US and Canada, it is common to tip about 10 to 15 percent of the bill.
Usually, people give tips to a waiter or waitress when they eat in a restaurant. The US tops the list of the biggest restaurant tips, with waiters and waitresses expecting to get 10 to 25 percent of the total bill.
So if you order $ 100(about 662 yuan) worth of food, you are expected to pay your waiter at least $15, making your total payment $ 115.
But why is this? Many waiters and waitresses get paid below the US minimum wage(最低工资) and work for tips to make up for(弥补) that. According to the American travel website, some states pay their servers(服务员) only $2.13 per hour. It is not just for waiters, either. Hotel maids, hairdressers and taxi drivers also usually work for tips.
Besides the US, tipping is also popular in some Southeast Asian countries, such as Indonesia and Thailand. However, in Japan there is a no-tipping culture and you may actually offend the waiter if you try to give him money.
( ) 50. Tipping is a big deal in countries.
A. African B. Western C. Asian
( ) 51. Why is tipping so important in the US?
A. Because it is advised by the travel website.
B. Because waiters will offer better service.
C. Because servers there are not well paid.
( ) 52. The underlined word “offend” in the last paragraph means “ ” in Chinese.
A. 冒犯 B. 表扬 C. 嘲笑
( ) 53. From the passage, we can learn the following EXCEPT .
A. tipping is popular in the US
B. is OK to tip a waiter in Japan
C. people in some Southeast Asian countries also tipit

Do you have good teeth? We brush our teeth to keep them clean and healthy. In fact, having good eating habits is also helpful for the health of our teeth!
Eating too many sweets is the worst thing you can do to your teeth. When you eat candies, for example, the bacteria(细菌) in your mouth will produce some acids. These acids can destroy your teeth and cause you to have tooth decay(蛀牙). You can try eating sugar-free snacks instead of sugary ones. Chewing(咀嚼) xylitol gum(木糖醇口香糖), for example, can help reduce the bacteria in your mouth.
More or less, eating leaves some food on your teeth. If you chew more while eating, the friction between your mouth and tongue will help you to better clear out the food debris. People often chew more when they eat high-fiber(高纤维的) foods, such as cabbage. When they eat low-fiber foods, such as white bread, they chew fewer times. Therefore, it’s a good idea to eat more high-fiber foods.
You may think it doesn’t matter eating ice cubes(冰块), because they’re just water. However, chewing ice can create tiny cracks(裂缝) in your teeth. These cracks can then weaken your teeth. While it may feel good to break up ice cubes with your teeth, it’s better to let them melt in your drink.
All in all, in order to have a brighter smile, you should improve your eating habits and brush your teeth twice a day. Also remember to visit your dentist often!
( ) 54. What’s the advantage of chewing xylitol gum?
A. It can make your teeth more stronger.
B. It can make you less hungry.
C. It can help reduce the bacteria in your mouth.
( ) 55. According to the passage, what is the proper way to break up ice cubes?
A. Biting them into pieces.
B. Melting them in the drink.
C. Clearing them with tongues.
( ) 56. Which of the following can best show the structure of the passage?
A. B. C.
( ) 57. What is the best title for the passage?
A. Stop Eating Too Many Sweets
B. Eating Healthily Is Important
C. Good Eating Habits for Better Teeth

I read an interesting article in a teachers’ magazine recently. 60. Worryingly, the results showed that teenagers are facing a new problem. They may go to bed and get up at appropriate times, but a growing number are waking up in the middle of the night, not to use the bathroom or have a snack, but because of FOMO.
According to the article, the number of students waking up during the night to check social media is growing. Afraid of missing a comment or opportunity to take part in a chat, teenagers are waking at all times of the night, going online and getting involved. 61.
Experts are worried about this growing trend and the report shows some worrying statistics: 23% of 12-to 15-year-olds wake up nearly every night to use social media. 62. One in third of the students are constantly tired and unable to function to their full capacity(能力).
So I’d like to ask you to be responsible when it comes to social media. Switch off your devices at night. The world won’t end and your social media will be waiting to greet you in the morning!

第三节 (共5个小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
阅读下面短文,根据其内容填空和回答问题。(63至66题每题答案不超过3个单词,67题须用完整句子回答。)
Teachers are often considered to be engineers of the human. But there’s one person in China who is called “the teacher of teachers”.
He is Chinese educator Tao Xingzhi. Born in Anhui Province, China, 1891, Tao studied at Columbia University, US, in 1914. There he studied educational philosophy under the guidance of John Dewey, an American philosopher and an educational reformer(改革家). But when Tao returned to China in 1917 and began his own career as an educator, he did not blindly copy Dewey’s education methods or theories. For Tao, education is an active process in real life experiences rather than one of telling and being told. He proposed(提出) “unity(融合) of teaching, learning, and reflective acting(反思性行为)”.
Apart from reforming education methods, Tao also tried his best to promote mass(大众的) education.
After doing surveys in Beijing, Tianjin and Shanghai in 1921, Tao was surprised to learn that the rate of urban illiteracy(文盲) in China went beyond 70 percent. To solve the problem, Tao organized young workers and farmers to study while working. To deal with the lack of teachers and money, in 1927, Tao set up Xiaozhuang Normal College(晓庄师范学院) in the northern suburbs of Nanjing to train teachers and educators, most of whom became teachers at schools in the countryside.
Even during the anti-Japanese war(抗日战争), Tao never forgot his ambition. He set up Yucai Middle School in the suburbs of Chongqing and offered free education to refugee(难民) children after the Japanese invasion(侵略) of China began in 1937.
Maybe Tao’s motto is the best explanation for his life, “Giving a whole heart, yet taking nothing in return, not even a leaf of grass.”
63. Tao Xingzhi studied at Columbia University, US, in .
64. Tao Xingzhi returned to China in 1917 and began his own career as .
65. Tao Xingzhi thought education is in real life experiences instead of telling and being told.
