Step 2: Pre-reading (5 mins)
1. Vocabulary Preview: Introduce the new words from the PPT (ordinary, equally, socialism, post, limited, limitlessly, rescue, trap, rubble, comfort, unsung, grateful, superhero, hairdresser, dedication).
2. Prediction: Ask students: "Whose heroes will be mentioned in the passages? What kinds of people can be heroes?"
Step 3: While-reading (15 mins)
1. First Reading (Underline Key Parts): Ask students to read the four passages and underline the parts that show why the students think these people are heroes:
- Li Ming's hero — Lei Feng: A Chinese soldier who believed in socialism, worked hard in his ordinary post, and was always ready to help others.
- Han Li's hero — Lin Hao: The youngest rescue hero during the Wenchuan earthquake. He remained calm when trapped, encouraged and comforted others, climbed out, and returned to carry out two classmates. He was only eight years old.
- Song Hua's hero — Cleaners: Unsung heroes who go out to work early every day while we are sleeping, no matter whether it is rainy, windy, or snowy.
- Wang Mei's hero — Her mother: A superhero with many roles — a good worker, a caring mother, the best cook, a repairer, and a hairdresser.
2. Second Reading (Complete Wang Mei's Passage): Have students read again and complete the summary passage:
- Lei Feng is Li Ming's hero. Lei Feng worked very hard in his ordinary post. Li Ming admires his selfless dedication. Han Li's hero is Lin Hao. He was the youngest rescue hero in the Wenchuan earthquake. After he climbed out of the rubble, he returned and carried out his classmates. Every morning, cleaners start to work when we are sleeping. They are Song Hua's heroes. Song Hua feels grateful to them. To me, my mother is a superhero with many roles. She is not only a good worker at her job, but also a cook and a hairdresser at home. She can even be a person who repairs things.
3. Third Reading (True or False): Have students judge the statements:
- "Lei Feng worked hard in an important post." (F — ordinary post)
- "Lin Hao was eight years old when he saved his classmates." (T)
- "Cleaners only work on sunny days." (F — they work in all weather)
- "Wang Mei's mother can only cook." (F — she has many roles)
4. Check Answers: Discuss the answers as a class.
Step 4: Language Points (10 mins)
1. Explanation: Use the PPT to explain the key language points with clear examples:
- ordinary: ordinary people; ordinary cleaners; He is just an ordinary student.
- equally: Boys and girls are equally important. → The two jobs are of equal difficulty.
- socialism: socialist (adj./n.); social (adj.); society (n.); China sticks to socialism.
- post: ordinary post; post office; He works hard at his post.
- limited / limit / limitlessly: Our time is limited. / There is a limit to everything. / We should serve people limitlessly.
- trapped / trap: be trapped in; Many people were trapped in the rubble after the earthquake.
- comfort: comfort sb.; comfortable (adj.); He comforted his scared classmates.
- unsung: un- + sung; The cleaners are unsung heroes of our city.
- grateful: be grateful to sb.; gratitude (n.); I am grateful to my teachers for their help.
- hairdresser: hair + dresser; My mother is a good hairdresser at home.
2. Practice: Complete the multiple-choice and fill-in-the-blank exercises on the PPT. Check answers together.
Step 5: Post-reading & Discussion (8 mins)
1. Pair Work: Students work in pairs to discuss the questions:
- "Who is your hero? Why is he/she your hero?"
- Use the sentence structure: "My hero is ______ because ______."
2. Sharing: Invite a few pairs to share their heroes with the class.
3. Discussion Extension: Ask students: "Can ordinary people be heroes? Why or why not?" Guide them to understand that heroes are not only famous people but also ordinary people who do extraordinary things.
Step 6: Project & Summary (5 mins)
1. Group Project (Hero Book):
- Think of someone you know who makes the world a better place. Perhaps they help people or animals, keep your town safe, or make beautiful things.
- Each person writes a page about his/her hero.
- Make a book with these pages and give it a name.
- Hold a book exhibition and introduce your heroes to the class.
2. Summary: Review the key vocabulary and the four heroes (Lei Feng, Lin Hao, cleaners, mother). Emphasize the key message: Heroes can be anyone who serves others selflessly and makes the world better.
3. Homework:
- Write a short passage about your hero (60–80 words). Include: who he/she is, why he/she is your hero, and what you have learned from him/her.
- Complete the "Hero Book" page and prepare for the exhibition.
思政渗透与学科育人有机融合点Subject based Character Education
This lesson uses the stories of four different heroes — Lei Feng (selfless dedication), Lin Hao (courage and bravery in disaster), cleaners (unsung heroes of the city), and a mother (everyday hero with many roles) — to teach students that heroism exists in many forms. By learning about these heroes, students develop gratitude, respect for ordinary workers, and an understanding that anyone can be a hero through selfless service and dedication. Lei Feng's famous quote "People have a limited life, but serving others has no limit" serves as a powerful moral lesson about the value of serving others. The group project "Hero Book" encourages students to recognize and appreciate the heroes in their own lives, fostering a positive and grateful outlook. This aligns with the goal of nurturing students' moral character, social responsibility, and appreciation for both great figures and ordinary people who contribute to society.
