Passage 2
Failure isn’t the end, unless you let it be. Don’t believe me? Here are four people who lived through failure before going on to become names known around the world.
Walt Disney
Disney began his career by being fired by a newspaper for not being creative enough. Later, his Mickey Mouse cartoons were rejected because they were considered to be “too scary for women”. Also, The Three Little Pigs was turned down because it only had four characters. Thankfully, we have the Disney Company today because Disney chose not to listen to any of his critics and press forward towards his dreams.
Stephen King
King is a best-selling writer whose work has been made into several motion pictures. However, his first work was rejected 30 times, which led to King throwing it in the trash. Thankfully, his wife persuaded him to keep working at it, and—from that poor start—Carrie was born.
Milton Hershey
The man who blessed us with the sweet milk chocolate treat we all love wasn’t a hit the first time around. He once worked for a local candy factory. But when he went out on his own, he failed miserably. Then he returned to the family farm and perfected the art of making delicious milk chocolate candy, which we enjoy today.
Theodor Geisel
This author struggled to write a novel that publishing companies would call “pure rubbish” several times — 27 to be exact. The man just wouldn’t quit, though. One fateful night, he ran into an old friend who was a children’s literature editor. The friend agreed to publish Geisel’s work. Better known today as Dr. Seuss, Geisel was never again called a failure after his first book became a hit.
1.Why is the Disney Company known to us nowadays?
A. Disney was rejected many times.
B. Disney improved his works later.
C. Disney got fired and began his career.
D. Disney ignored critics and fought for his dreams.
2.What is Milton Hershey famous for today?
A. His big family farm.
B. His successful art career.
C. His delicious milk chocolate candy.
D. His experience in making milk chocolate.
3.What do the people mentioned have in common?
A. They have a gift for making money.
B. They suffered several defeats on the path to success.
C. They are creative and highly educated.
D. They were successful at the very start.

It felt like magic.” Joshua Vermillion was describing the first time he used artificial intelligence (AI) to make an image.
Vermillion is an architect and designer. He creates artwork of spaces. Before he started using AI to do this, Vermillion would make maybe 10 pieces in a year. Last year, though, he made around 150 works. “I can just simply tell the computer what I want in simple English,” he says. “What a time to be alive!”
Many other artists, though, aren’t so ecstatic about AI-generated art. Katria Raden is an independent illustrator and author. People used to hire her regularly to create art for marketing materials or to illustrate children’s books. Last year, almost no one reached out about these types of jobs. The rise of AI may help explain this. “At times I think it’s a bad dream,” she says. “I feel scared and angry, but also pretty sad.”
Using AI to create an image is quick and easy. There are many popular image generators. They are cheap or even free to use. They also pose threats to some artists’ jobs.
But the problems go deeper than that. These images were scraped (勉强获得) from the Internet. Data scraping automatically pulls files from web pages. Often, no one asks permission or checks what these files contain. Thousands of artists’ names and works have been found in the data set. Illegal or harmful images and people’s personal photos are also among those data.
Raden doesn’t like the way AI image generators were trained or how they’ re being used. “It will have a bad effect,” she says. Many artists agree with her.
Vermillion sees their point. But for him, the rise of AI tools has been mostly positive. At design workshops he runs, he always asks people how they use AI in their works. He recalls one participant saying, “Sometimes I just need a creative partner that doesn’t think like I do.” AI, he feels, can play that role.
1.How does AI affect Vermillion?
A. He lives a simple life.
B. He becomes highly productive.
C. He is filled with a sense of loss.
D. He tends to write children’s books.
2.What does the underlined word “ecstatic” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Regretful. B. Curious. C. Excited. D. Ashamed.
3.What does Raden think of AI?
A. It threatens her work.
B. It increases her income.
C. It is a convenience for her.
D. It enables her to work freely.
4.What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A. To recommend a book about AL
B. To introduce an admirable artist.
C. To share various opinions on AL
D. To voice his views on modern life.
B 2. C 3. A 4. C

由文章第三段中“People used to hire her regularly to create art for marketing materials or to illustrate children’s books. Last year, almost no one reached out about these types of jobs. (25-26高二上·福建厦门双十中学·期中)When pop singer Chappell Roan spoke out against the invasive (侵入的) fan behavior she had been experiencing since her sudden rise to popularity earlier this year — tailing, unwanted touching, invasive contact with her friends and family members — she kicked off a major discussion about the relationship between a celebrity and their audience and the downside of so-called parasocial relationships.
A parasocial relationship (PSR) is generally defined as a relationship in which one member of the relationship isn’t aware of the other — e.g. a fan loves a celebrity, but the celebrity doesn’t know they exist. Not restricted to celebrities, PSRs also exist between people and fictional characters, whether played by an actor or not.
A parasocial relationship isn’t necessarily a bad thing. But digital interaction complicates these natural relationships. The conventional arrangement of PSRs, where the fan or follower has no actual contact with a celebrity or creator, gets visibly disrupted by our new platforms for communication — a celebrity might see a fan’s message or even reply. “When fans are gaining access to the celebrity through social media posts, it increases the perception of closeness.” Says Stever, a researcher on this topic.
As fandoms (粉丝群体) became more visible throughout the latter half of the 20th century, they became associated with youth and immaturity. adolescents (青少年) are most likely to develop intense parasocial relationships, because it can be a chance to practice real adult feelings on someone at a safe distance, as is shown in Chappell Roan’s case. And thanks to social media, behavior that might have been limited to one person or a few people might be given the chance to spread. So, a parasocial relationship that starts with healthy boundaries can turn sour.
But, as Stever says, “Anything that can be true about a regular social relationship can be true about a parasocial relationship. Are they positive? Can they be good for us? Absolutely. Can they be negative? Can they be poisonous for us? We all know examples of that.”
1.Why is pop singer Chappell Roan mentioned in paragraph 1?
A. To criticize parasocial relationships.
B. To reveal a fandom phenomenon.
C. To recommend an interaction pattern.
D. To introduce an academic discussion.
2.Which is a classic example of a parasocial relationship?
A. Children are greatly attached to their parents.
B. A reader loves a heroine in Shakespeare’s play.
C. A student feels a close bond with a roommate.
D. A singer interacts with fans at a meet-and-greet event.
3.How do social media affect parasocial relationships?
A. They cloud the lines with celebrities.
B. They invade celebrities’ privacy.
C. They develop a shared understanding.
D. They promote adolescent immaturity.
4.Which is the best title for the text?
A. Social Media: Restricting Parasocial Relationships
B. Invasive Fandom: Unhealthy Fan-celebrity Bonds
C. Disturbed Celebrities: From Admiration to Invasion
D. Parasocial Relationships: Complicated in Digital Age
D 2. B 3. A 4. D

根据第一段“When pop singer Chappell Roan spoke out against the invasive (侵入的) fan behavior she had been experiencing since her sudden rise to popularity earlier this year — tailing, unwanted touching, invasive contact with her friends and family members — she kicked off a major discussion about the relationship between a celebrity and their audience and the downside of so-called parasocial relationships. (当流行歌手Chappell Roan公开抨击自今年早些时候突然走红以来遭遇的侵入性粉丝行为 —— 跟踪、无端触碰、对其亲友进行骚扰式接触 —— 时,她引发了一场关于名人与受众关系,以及所谓“准社会关系”负面影响的广泛讨论。)”可知,第一段提到流行歌手Chappell Roan是为了引出一场关于准社会关系的学术讨论。故选D。
(2)题解析:
推理判断题。根据第二段“A parasocial relationship (PSR) is generally defined as a relationship in which one member of the relationship isn’t aware of the other — e.g. a fan loves a celebrity, but the celebrity doesn’t know they exist. Not restricted to celebrities, PSRs also exist between people and fictional characters, whether played by an actor or not. (准社会关系(PSR)通常被定义为一方并不知晓另一方存在的关系 —— 例如,粉丝热爱某位名人,但名人根本不知道对方的存在。这种关系并非仅限于名人,也存在于人与虚构角色之间(无论该角色是否由演员饰演)。)”可知,“一位读者喜欢莎士比亚戏剧中的女主角”符合准社会关系的定义,是一个经典例子。故选B。
(3)题解析:
细节理解题。根据第三段中“But digital interaction complicates these natural relationships. The conventional arrangement of PSRs, where the fan or follower has no actual contact with a celebrity or creator, gets visibly disrupted by our new platforms for communication — a celebrity might see a fan’s message or even reply. (但是数字互动使这些自然关系变得复杂。准社会关系的传统安排,即粉丝或追随者与名人或创作者没有实际接触,被我们的新通信平台明显打乱了——名人可能会看到粉丝的信息甚至回复。)”可知,社交媒体模糊了与名人之间的界限,从而影响了拟社会关系。故选A。
通读全文,特别是第三段中“A parasocial relationship isn’t necessarily a bad thing. But digital interaction complicates these natural relationships. (准社会关系并不一定是坏事。但是数字互动使这些自然关系变得复杂。)”以及最后一段“But, as Stever says, “Anything that can be true about a regular social relationship can be true about a parasocial relationship. Are they positive? Can they be good for us? Absolutely. Can they be negative? Can they be poisonous for us? We all know examples of that.” (但是,正如Stever所说,“任何关于普通社会关系的真实情况都可能适用于准社会关系。它们是积极的吗?它们对我们有好处吗?当然。它们会是消极的吗?它们会对我们有害吗?我们都知道这样的例子。”)”可知,本文主要讨论了数字时代准社会关系的复杂性。因此,D选项“Parasocial Relationships: Complicated in Digital Age (准社会关系:数字时代的复杂性)”是最佳标题。故选D。

(25-26高二上·福建厦门第二中学·期中)“Woman reading book, under a night sky, dreamy atmosphere,” I type into Deep Dream Generator’s Text 2 Dream feature. In less than a minute, an image is returned to me showing what I’ve described.
Welcome to the world of AI image generation, where you can create what on the surface looks like top-rank artwork using just a few text prompts (提示). But closer examination shows oddities. The face of the woman in my image has very odd features, and appears to be holding multiple books. And, while there’s an initial thrill at seeing an image appear, there’s no creative satisfaction.
AI image generation could influence everything from film to graphic novels and more. Children’s illustrators were quick to raise concerns about the technology. They say AI-generated art is the exact opposite of what art is believed to be. Fundamentally, art is all about translating something that you feel internally into something that exists externally. Whatever form it takes, true art is about the creative process much more than it’s about the final piece. And simply pressing a button to generate an image is not a creative process.
Beyond creativity, there are deeper issues. To create images from prompts, AI generators rely on databases of already existing art and text. This could lead to the creation of images that are intentionally meant to imitate (模仿) the style of other artists, without their agreement. There is an argument that AI generators work no differently to humans when it comes to being influenced by others’ work. However, a human artist is also adding emotion and slight difference into the mix. AI doesn’t do the same—it can only copy.
The increasing use of AI will also lead to a devaluing of the work of artists. There’s already a negative prejudice towards the creative industry. People will begin to think that their “work” is as excellent as that created by someone who has spent a career making art. It’s nonsense, of course. You can use your mobile phone to take a nice picture of your daughter, but you are no match for professionals.
1.What does the writer think of his image creation?
A. Exciting. B. Concerned. C. Unsatisfying. D. Shocking.
2.What do children’s illustrators value most about art?
A. The final art work.
B. External expressions in art.
C. The opposite of reality.
D. The journey to creation.
3.What is paragraph 4 of the text mainly about?
A. The ethical concerns in AI art imitation.
B. Human artists’ influence on AI generators.
C. The superiority of human artworks.
D. The over-reliance of human on technology.
4.Which of the following best summarizes the last paragraph?
A. Art is the mirror of life.
B. Rome is not built in a day.
C. No man can do two things at once.
D. Don’t judge a book by its cover.
C 2. D 3. A 4. B

根据第二段中“But closer examination shows oddities. The face of the woman in my image has very odd features, and appears to be holding multiple books. And, while there’s an initial thrill at seeing an image appear, there’s no creative satisfaction. (但仔细观察就会发现一些奇怪之处。在我的图像中,这个女人的脸有着非常奇怪的特征,似乎拿着多本书。而且,虽然看到图像出现时会有一种最初的兴奋感,但却没有创造性的满足感)”可知,作者认为这张创作出的图像很奇怪,无法令人满意。故选C项。
(2)题解析:
细节理解题。根据第三段中“Fundamentally, art is all about translating something that you feel internally into something that exists externally. Whatever form it takes, true art is about the creative process much more than it’s about the final piece. (从根本上说,艺术就是把你内心的感受转化成外在的东西。无论采用何种形式,真正的艺术都是关于创造过程而不是最终作品)”可知,儿童插画家最看重的是艺术的创作过程。故选D项。
(3)题解析:
主旨大意题。根据第四段“Beyond creativity, there are deeper issues. 故选A项。
根据最后一段“The increasing use of AI will also lead to a devaluing of the work of artists. There’s already a negative prejudice towards the creative industry. People will begin to think that their “work” is as excellent as that created by someone who has spent a career making art. It’s nonsense, of course. You can use your mobile phone to take a nice picture of your daughter, but you are no match for professionals. A.

(25-26高二上·福建龙岩九校联考·期中)In the fields of disaster rescue and industrial inspection, robots are becoming powerful assistants and pioneers for humans. From mechanical dogs navigating dangerous ruins to swarms of collaborative micro-fliers, they are expanding the boundaries of human action in various forms.
Spot
Over 1,000 of these yellow robots, Spot, are already checking factories and power plants. And now the New York City Fire Department is starting to use the dog-like devices for search-and-rescue missions.
In April 2024, a Spot surveyed the remains of a collapsed car park that was considered too unstable for fire crews to enter. Spot can also send back video footage, carry up to 14 kg and when fitted with an add-on “arm”, open doors and press switches.
Lightning Swarm
Inspired by fireflies, these robots are tiny and can give out light in various colours. The scientists intend the robots to use their lights to signal to and track each other: a low-power communication strategy for a lightweight robot.
“We envision sending hundreds or more of these tiny flying robots into a disaster site, and having them collectively search for survivors,” says MIT robotics engineer Prof Kevin Chen. “Once a survivor is found, they’ll pass the information out to the operators.”
Trail Blazers
At the Bajiao Fire Rescue Station, in Yantai, eastern China, a firefighter tests out a fire-fighting robot.
For a few years, China has been promoting the technology, which allows human firefighters to stay safely outside the danger zone while controlling robot firefighters to put out fires at chemical plants and in subways. One major advantage of this approach is fire resistance—Trail Blazers can work at temperatures of 1,000℃ for over 30 mins.
Rooster
Thanks to its clever design, Rooster can roll across surfaces or fly around to examine almost any type of disaster site, moving through narrow passages and windows, or over obstacles and up or down staircases.
Designed to assist in search operations, the robot uses cameras and sensors to scan a space, so that rescuers don’t need to enter dangerous areas. Rooster can also communicate with search teams and other robots via a radio link.
1.Which robot can be operated in extremely hot situations?
A. Spot. B. Lightning Swarm. C. Trail Blazers. D. Rooster.
2.What do these robots have in common?
A. They can operate in high-risk environments.
B. They can help conduct rescues.
C. They are equipped with perception (感知) tools for environmental detection.
D. They are modeled after animals.
3.Where is this text most probably from?
A. A science fiction.
B. An operating handbook.
C. A shopping guideline.
D. A science magazine.

Dennis helped lead the Shockers to success, but he didn’t show off. Instead, the soft-spoken college junior from Louisiana did something very humble (谦逊的). The video from the court shows him picking up rubbish in the stands. No one asked him to do it.
The video was shared on Twitter by Taylor Eldridge, who covers Wichita State athletics for The Wichita Eagle newspaper. “Dexter is a different kind of guy,” Eldridge tweeted (发推文). The video quickly circulated, which received more than 1.5 million views and tens of thousands of likes.
“Wasn’t in trouble or anything. Didn’t have to. He just wanted to help out the cleaning workers,” Eldridge wrote in another tweet.
“Cleanup can take up to three hours after every game,” Wichita State University Facilities Director David Gomez said. “Seeing a student athlete staying to help is inspiring.”
“We have several people who have been here for many years and I know for some of them, that’s probably the first time they’ve seen something like that happen,” said Gomez. “And I want to say thank you for leading and showing us that there are still people out there who recognize the hard work that’s done around here.”
Dennis refused KWCH’s offer for an interview, but did address the moment on Twitter. “Didn’t do it for attention,” Dennis tweeted.
