However, fine art opens the door to everyone. Learning how to look at and understand artworks requires us to take the time to view, identify and think. Look at the Art As the first step, it’s necessary to take a moment to recognize the artwork’s general characteristics: ● Is it a painting, sculpture or craftwork? ● Does it appear disordered or organized? ● Are the colors bright or soft? Identify the Art and Artist Knowing when or how the artwork was made and learning something about the artist can reveal more context. We all know the famous painting Guernica is a masterpiece created by Picasso in 1937. However, if we can find out Picasso composed the painting to reflect a bombing during the Spanish Civil War, we know more about its anti-war meaning. Even if the historical context of an artwork is not obvious, knowing the year of its creation offers more context. Think About the Meaning Use what you observed in the first two steps to think about meanings the artwork could have. Consider what the title, the subjects, or the symbols meant to the artist when he or she created the artwork. What do the colors say about the artist, and how do they apply to the subjects in the art? For example, the owls in Lebo’s works stand for wisdom, but why are they so brightly colored? In addition, ask about the feelings it gives you. Many artists have specific meanings behind their art, but also encourage viewers to come up with their own explanations. Still, every explanation is not automatically correct, which is why the techniques described above are helpful in finding clues. The next time you’re admiring a work of art, keep these techniques in mind, and its meaning may unfold before your eyes. 21. What is the first step when viewing art? A. Doing some research on the artist. B. Being “in-the-know” about the work. C. Identifying the work’s general features. D. Knowing the year of an artwork’s creation. 22. When thinking about the meaning of an artwork, you should . A. explain it freely B. choose a title for it C. describe it to the viewers D. ask how it makes you feel 23. Who is the passage intended for? A. Museum staff. B. Gallery visitors. C. Professional artists. D. Exhibition organizers. B E. O. Wilson, “the Darwin of the 21st century”, is considered the world’s leading expert on ants and a pioneer of the theory of biodiversity. Wilson was born in Birmingham, Alabama, in 1929. When he was young, he was crazy about the natural world and spent his childhood exploring woods and observing insects. When he was in high school, he narrowed his focus down to the study of insects. After earning his master’s degree in biology in the University of Alabama, he went to Harvard University to work for a PhD in 1951. After graduation, he remained there for his career as a teacher. Wilson authored many books and was awarded quite a few prizes, such as the Crafoord Prize and the Pulitzer Prize for General Nonfiction. Wilson has a strong gift for storytelling and narrative. His books are easy to understand and can attract readers, even those who don’t care much for scientific topics. In his writings, Wilson further enlarged his study from biology to other subjects, such as sociobiology, geography and even art. The friendship between the scientist Finch and Wilson is also worth mentioning. “On his 88th birthday he wanted to collect ants in the delta so we wandered through an Alabama woodland,” Finch recalled, “We also went to other areas like two boys getting into the woods.” After retiring from teaching in 1996, Wilson founded the E. O. Wilson Biodiversity Foundation to promote worldwide understanding of the importance of biodiversity. “He’s still writing,” said Finch. “He always tells me,” This is my last book. “But he actually told me that six books ago.” 24. Which of the following can best describe Wilson’s books? A. Critical and serious. B. Creative and useful. C. Attractive and understandable. D. Professional and complex. 25. What can we infer from the text? A. Wilson is a leading expert on insects B. Wilson covered many subjects in his books. C. Wilson studied for a PhD in the University of Alabama. D. Wilson’s books don’t attract those who are not into science. 26. What does the last paragraph imply? A. Wilson loves travelling very much. B. Wilson often tells lies to his friend. C. Wilson is good at wealth management. D. Wilson has been working and studying hard all his life. 27. Which of the following can be the best title of the text? A. The great books by E. O. Wilson B. E. O. Wilson’s contributions to biology C. E. O. Wilson—the Darwin of the 21st century D. The valuable friendship between Finch and E. O. Wilson C Here’s an idea whose time has come: A flu shot that doesn’t require an actual shot. For the first time, researchers have tested a flu vaccine patch (疫苗贴) in a human clinical trial and found that it delivered as much protection as a traditional injection with a needle (注射针). Doctors and public health experts have high hopes that it will increase the number of people who get immunized (免疫的) against the flu. Seasonal flu is responsible for up to half a million deaths around the world each year according to the World Health Organization. A team led by Georgia Tech engineer Mark Prausnitz has come up with another method that uses “microneedles”. These tiny needles are so small that 100 of them, arranged in order on a patch, can fit under your thumb. Yet they’re big enough to hold vaccine for three types of flu. None of the study volunteers had serious side effects. The groups that got patches had mild skin reactions that were not seen in the regular needle group, while the volunteers in the regular needle group were more likely to experience pain. Overall, 70 percent of the volunteers who got vaccine patches said they’d rather use them again than get a traditional flu shot. The study authors declared it a success on all fronts. The biggest beneficiaries (受益者) could be people in low- and middle-income countries, where flu vaccines are hard to come by. Reducing pain is nice, but other benefits — the patch costs less, is easier to transport, doesn’t require a fridge, can be self-administered and doesn’t cause waste of needles — are even better. “Microneedle Patches have the potential to become ideal candidates for vaccination programs,” wrote Katja Hoschler and Maria Zambon of Public Health England. 28. What do we know about the vaccine patch? A. It causes slight side effects. B. It delivers vaccine to the little finger. C. It is produced by the WHO. D. It works badly on 30% of the volunteers. 29. The new patch has all the following benefits except that . A. it can be used without a doctor B. it is provided free of charge C. it can be kept at room temperature D. it needs less care in transportation 30. What is Katja and Maria’s attitude towards the new shot? A. Cautious. B. Disapproving. C. Indifferent. D. Supportive. 31. What is the passage mainly about? A. A vaccine patch that makes flu shots a thing of the past. B. A clinical study that protects people from disease. C. A vaccine patch that cures people of their flu. D. A method that makes traditional flu shots painless. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分, 满分 12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 In English it’s common to say, “I know this town like the back of my hand!” While we may know our towns really well, how well do we actually know our hands? ___32___ Matthew Longo and his team from University College London studied the left hands of 100 people. With their hands placed palms down under a board, Longo’s team gave the instruction to point to their knuckles (指关节) and fingertips with a marker pen. How did they do? Not that well. Sam’s eyes had been fixed on the bobber(浮漂) floating on the water’s surface since their arrival. His fascination with nature had always driven him to ask questions and seek out new adventures.“Uncle Ben, are you fishing? Have you caught a fish?” he asked, his curiosity bubbling over. A warm smile spread Ben’s face as he regarded the young boy’s eager expression. “ Indeed, I am, young man, “he replied, “but as for catching a fish, well, that’s a story yet to be told.” Observing their son express his curiosity and effortlessly strike up a conversation with Ben, Sam’s parents exchanged warm, knowing smiles. They realized that this chance encounter with Ben could lead to some valuable lessons. “Can you teach me how to fish?” asked Sam, his voice filled with enthusiasm. “Well, young man,” Ben replied, “fishing is more than just catching fish. It’s about patience and embracing the wait. If you’re willing to learn, I’d be happy to teach you.” With that, Ben reached for another fishing rod and invited Sam to join him. He demonstrated how to cast the line into the lake, hold the fishing rod steady, and patiently await a curious fish to take the bait. He then showed Sam how to respond when the bobber moved. The other hand, comparatively often, the weaker or simply less subjectively preferred, is called the non dominant hand hand. This is often defined by one's writing hand as IT is fairly common for people to prefer to do some tasks with each hand. Right handers is by far more common. About ninety percent of the human population are right handed. Roughly one in ten of us is left handed. But why? A team at the university of oxford analyzed four hundred thousand people's DNA. They then compared lefties and rides in a game, and found four genetic instructions that influence left handers. These seem to work by changing how the brain develops. Brain scans showed the left handed people's these regions of the brain involved in language. We're Better connected and more a coordinated. The study also showed slightly higher risks of anxiety disorders, heart disease and slightly lower risks of parkinson's disease among left handed people. A psychologist found that left handers, particularly those with mixed hand preference, perform much Better than right handers in musical memory tasks, the hand you usually use is known as the dominant hand due to IT being stronger or faster. The other hand, comparatively often, the weaker or simply less subjectively preferred, is called the non dominant hand. Handiness is often defined by one's writing hand, as IT is fairly common for people to prefer to do some tasks with each hand. Right handed is by far more common. About ninety percent of the human population are right handed. Roughly one in ten of us is left handed. But why? A team at the university of oxford analyzed four hundred thousand people's D. N. A. They then compared lefties and rides in a game, and found four genetic instructions that influence left handiness. These seem to work by changing how the brain develops. 【答案】21. C 22. D 23. Wilson——21世纪的达尔文”最符合文章标题。故选C。 C Here’s an idea whose time has come: A flu shot that doesn’t require an actual shot. 【答案】28. A 29. B 30. D 31. With their hands placed palms down under a board, Longo’s team gave the instruction to point to their knuckles (指关节) and fingertips with a marker pen. How did they do? Not that well. In the experiment, according to Longo, “people think their hands are wider than they actually are.” ___33___ They were most accurate when finding their thumbs, but became less accurate with each finger, up to their pinkies (小指). “It is connected to our sense of position,” explained Longo. Humans know where different parts of our bodies are, even if we can’t see them. It tells us whether a joint (关节) is straight or not. ___34___So the experiment the team conducted was to find those maps. ___35___ On the basis of the study, in our brain’s map, brains “see” areas based on our sense of touch. The stronger the sense of touch in a specific body part is, the bigger that body part seems. An example is our lips. As they have more nerves than our noses, our brain’s map shows our lips are bigger. ___36___ If you’ve ever had something stuck in your teeth, it probably feels huge! That’s because our tongues also have lots of nerves. A. More nerves, larger a body part seems. B. Let’s see how our humans know our body parts. C. It’s essential to the sizes and shapes of our body. D. Maybe not quite as well as we think, said a scientific study. E. The same can happen with body parts having a lot of nerves. F. They also thought their fingers were shorter than their true lengths. G. Our brains know the body sizes and shapes from the maps they make for themselves. 【答案】32. D 33. F 34. G 35. A 36. Charmed by the graceful art of fishing, Sam couldn’t wait to give it a try. As he sat down beside Uncle Ben, he appeared as calm and relaxed as the skilled fisherman. With the sun dipping below the horizon, Sam’s heart sank as well. Unable to contain his frustration, he briefly released the fishing rod as if to quit. Para.2: Just then, Sam’s bobber suddenly dipped below the surface. “Sam!” Uncle Ben called out. Realizing that a fish finally took the bait, Sam swiftly picked up his rod and lifted it with care, following Uncle Ben’s instructions. His heart raced as he struggled to keep the rod steady. The fish put up a fierce fight, but with Ben’s help, Sam eventually managed to pull up his prize. Sam’s face brightened as he held the fish in his hands showing it off to his parents. This was his first successful catch.
