W:OK.I'll make you one of those instead.
Text 8
M:Hello,Eve!It's me,Mark.Um,did I wake you up?
W:Oh,Mark.No,I'm awake!
M:So,are you ready to leave for the picnic?
W:Ready?Oh,right.Um,almost.
M:Great!Did you remember to get gas?
W:(Yawns)Uh,no.I'll get some before I come to your
place.
M:Ok.And you got the beach chairs and umbrella, right?
W:Yeah, they're here.I just have to put them in the car.
M:So what time will you be here? Are you ready to leave?
W:Well,almost.I just need to take a shower,and...
M:Well,don't be too long!
W:No,I won't.And when I get to your place,maybe we'll
have time for breakfast.
M:Breakfast? But it's almost time for lunch!
W:Oh,good. Then I can eat a sandwich on the way to the
beach.
M:A sandwich?Oh,no,the sandwiches!I forgot to buy!

M:What's your favourite sport,Susan?
W:Soccer.
M:Why?
W:It's a good game.But,like most of us,I just watch it.I
watch a soccer match nearly every Saturday afternoon ei-
ther at the local stadium or on TV.What about you,
John?Do you play soccer?
·18
M:I'm afraid not.And I don't watch it either.I know it's
Britain's most popular outdoor game, but I never liked
it,not even when I was at school.
W:But don't you watch the Cup finals and the great inter-
national matches between British teams and other na-
tional teams?
M:Very rarely.My favourite game is basketball.I began
playing it when I was in the middle school and I've kept
it up ever since.
W:It's very interesting,isn't it?
M:Yes,it is.It has become popular in many countries.Do
you enjoy watching basketball matches,especially
NBA?They're very interesting and exciting.
W:Yes,I watch them on TV.
Text 10
M:You're about to finish high school, and I want to explain
what I did when I was your age.I was lucky,at that
time, that your grandfather was so supportive. My fa-
ther always firmly believed in me-the same way that I
believe in you. That's why, after graduating from high
school in New York, your grandparents sent me on a trip
to Asia to learn more about life.I landed in India as a
fresh-faced 18-year-old kid with endless curiosity about the
world. There,I worked at a school in exchange for
food and a place to stay.Although I didn't earn any
money,I was happy and learned so much about life.
From there,I flew to Australia and got my first job. This
position wasn't an office job or anything fancy.I painted
houses in the sun for 12 hours a day.I'm telling you this
story not to encourage you to have a similar experience, but to
inspire you to do as much as you can in your teens and early
20's.You'll be glad you did.

W:Look,I'm just saying, when have you ever seen John be
nice to someone?
M:Well, last time he was nice to me,but it turned out that
he only wanted me to give him a lift somewhere.
Text 2
W:The task is too hard.I have to do twenty-word prob-
lems, but they are confusing. They all have to do with
travel time and distance.
M:Don't try to solve the whole thing all at once.First solve
this part. Then work on the next part.
