What are they doing? (Show short pictures of people doing housework) T: Do you help your parents with housework at home? What chores do you usually do? (Invite 2-3 students to share simple answers) S1: I sweep the floor. T: Great! You help your family a lot. T: Today our topic is What can you do for your home?. We will learn many expressions about chores and learn how to make polite requests to ask others to help. Let’s start with Activity 1a. Step 2 Presentation & Activity 1a (7 mins) Activity 1: Learn Chore Phrases T: Open your books, turn to Page 12. Look at the six pictures in 1a. Let’s read these phrases together. (Teacher leads students to read each phrase, highlight the stress: pack up things, sweep the floor, clean the bathroom, feed the fish, hang up photos, water the plants. Repeat twice. Check individual pronunciation.) T: Now, read the instruction: Do you do these things at home? What chores do you do? Work with your partner. Talk about which chores you often do. You have 3 minutes. (Students pair talk, teacher walks around to monitor and offer help.) T: Time’s up. Who wants to share? What chores do you do at home? S: I water the plants. T: Nice job! Step 3 Listening Tasks 1b & 1c (12 mins) Activity 2: Listen and find details T: Now we will listen to two conversations. The first conversation is between Jim and his dad. They talk about chores for their new house. Look at 1b. Tick the things Jim’s dad asks him to do. T: First, read the four sentences silently. I will play the audio once. Ready? Play audio. (Audio 1b plays) T: OK, let’s check answers. What does Jim’s dad ask him to do? Ss: sort things into boxes; write “Jim’s bedroom” on each box; pack up his things. T: Exactly. Good listening. T: Next, 1c. Listen to the second conversation. Match people with their chores. Read the items quickly for 30 seconds. Now listen carefully. (Audio 1c plays) T: Let’s check the matching answers. 1. Jim — C hang up the photos 2. Peter — A sweep the floor 3. Helen — D clean the bathroom 4. Mum — F keep fish in the living room 5. Dad — B grow flowers on the balcony T: Perfect! Now listen again. Pay attention to how they ask for help politely. (Play audio again, students listen and underline the request sentences.) T: From the conversation, we can find people use “Can you please…?” to ask for help. And “Could you please…?” is more polite. Step 4 Oral practice: Activity 1d (12 mins) Activity 3: Sentence Drill & Role-play T: Look at the dialogue bubble in 1d. Read together: —Can / Could you please water the plants? —Sure. / Sorry, I have to clean the bathroom now. T: If you agree, we say “Sure.” If you are busy, politely refuse and tell your reason: “Sorry, I have to…” T: Now let’s do a quick substitution drill. I will say a chore phrase, you make a request sentence. T: sweep the floor. Ss: Could you please sweep the floor? T: clean the bathroom. Ss: Could you please clean the bathroom? Activity 4: Make your own conversation T: Now work in pairs. Use the six chores from 1a to create your own short dialogue. You can use the sentence frame. You have 5 minutes to prepare. (Students work in pairs to make dialogues. Teacher circulates to give guidance, correct pronunciation and grammar.) T: Time’s up. Which pair wants to act out your dialogue for us? (Invite 2-3 pairs to perform their conversations in front of the class. Give positive feedback.) Example: S1: Could you please feed the fish? S2: Sorry, I have to pack up things. T: Wonderful! Your pronunciation is clear, and your dialogue is natural. Step 5 Summary & Homework (4 mins) T: Let’s summarize what we learned today. First, we learned six phrases for housework. Second, we learned to make polite requests with “Can/Could you please…?” and give replies. Remember, could sounds more polite. T: Housework is everyone’s job. We should help our family with chores. T: Now your homework. • Copy the six chore phrases and read them aloud. • Make one more dialogue with your partner after class. • Think about one chore you can do for your family this week. T: Class is over. Goodbye, everyone. Ss: Goodbye, teacher. Blackboard Design Unit 2 What can you do for your home? Chore phrases pack up things sweep the floor clean the bathroom feed the fish hang up photos water the plants Polite Requests —Can / Could you please …? (Could → more polite) —Sure. —Sorry, I have to … Teaching Notes Engagement tips: Chore substitution drill keeps all students active. Pair performance can attract students’ attention and reduce anxiety of speaking English. Differentiation: For weaker students, provide sentence prompt cards; stronger students can add more reasons in their refusal sentences. Real context: The whole lesson uses the situation of moving to a new house, which connects 1b and 1c listening materials, forming a consistent scenario and making language practice meaningful. Bonus: Full English Teacher’s Script (40 mins, matched with this lesson plan) Step 1 Warm-up & Lead-in (5 mins) T: Good morning, everyone. Ss: Good morning, teacher.
