Passage 1
(25-26 九年级上・江苏扬州江都・期中)
In school, do you rush from one subject to another? When things happen so fast, it is easy to get lost in what you are doing or learning. So it is important to stop yourself every now and then to think about what you’ve been doing or learning.
Self-reflection (反省) means slowing down and calming yourself, including calming your mind. By being calm and going slowly, you give your brain a chance to think about what it has already received. Some people prefer to do these self-reflections in their mind, while others keep a diary or written notes. Either method works, depending on your own personal learning.
School textbooks are divided into units of study. This makes it easier for someone to begin self-reflection. Look for time when you complete a unit of study in the subjects you are learning, such as Math, Science and Art. Sometimes you know the unit is over because there is some kind of test. Use these natural breaks to stop and do self-reflection.
Find a quiet place. You can even be sitting at your desk at school when you finish something early and the other students are still working. If you are going to take notes, take out paper or your reflection diary. Write down some notes on the new things that you learned in the unit. Let your mind think about the notes you have written and make some connections. Next, think about things that you are not sure of. Maybe you learned a new way to work out a math problem, but you’re not sure when to use it. Write these down in your diary so you can remember to ask your teacher later.
Self-reflection is an important skill for a good learner. It doesn’t take much time, but it can help you do better in your studies.
1. Why is self-reflection important according to Paragraph 1?
A. It makes you learn faster.
B. It lets you think about what you’ve learned.
C. It helps you finish units quickly.
D. It makes you feel calm and relaxed.
2. Where can you find natural breaks to do self-reflection?
A. At the end of each unit. B. Before each test.
C. At the beginning of each term. D. Between two subjects.
3. What is the last step of self-reflection according to Paragraph 4?
A. Write down new things you learned.
B. Think about the notes you wrote.
C. Write down things you are not sure of.
D. Ask your teacher for help.
4. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. How to be a good learner at school.
B. An important learning skill—self-reflection.
C. When to do self-reflection in study.
D. Different ways of self-reflection.
Passage 2

Escaping a fire is a serious matter. Knowing what to do during a fire can save a life. It is important to know the ways you can use, such as stairs and fire escapes, but not lifts.
From the lower floors of the building, escape through windows if possible. The second floor window is usually not very high from the ground. Maybe it is safer to jump a short way than to stay in a burning building.
When you are waiting for help, be sure to keep the door closed. Or smoke and fire may come into the room. Keep your head low at the window to be sure you get fresh air instead of smoke.
On a top floor, people can usually go to the roof. They can stand on the roof to make it easier for people to find them. Don’t shout all the time because you may be too tired to shout when help comes.
1. What should we use to escape a fire?
A. Lifts. B. Stairs. C. Elevators. D. Windows of all floors.
2. Why should we keep the door closed when waiting for help?
A. To keep warm in the room.
B. To stop smoke and fire coming in.
C. To make it easier for rescuers to find the door.
D. To keep fresh air inside the room.
3. What should we do when we are on the roof waiting for help?
A. Shout loudly all the time. B. Lie down to rest.
C. Stand to be seen easily. D. Open the roof door.

The twenty-four solar terms are an important part of traditional Chinese culture. They were created to reflect changes in weather and help people plan farming activities. These terms also influence many parts of daily life.
Among them, Start of Winter marks the cold season’s start. The Start of Winter is the first solar term of winter, marking the official beginning of winter season in Chinese lunar year.
In Chinese culture, winter is a time when everything in nature seems to rest. Animals start to hibernate (冬眠), and people store the food they harvested in autumn for the cold months.
After the Start of Winter, the weather becomes much colder and drier in most parts of China. The land freezes over in the northeast, and crops and forest trees begin to overwinter. The “Three Autumns” in the Jianghuai region are coming to an end. The south of the country needs to plant late winter wheat crops, while the north comes to the wintering period. What’s more, the air tends to dry up after the Start of Winter, and the soil holds less water, therefore efforts on forest fire prevention begin at this time.

Passage 2
(25-26 九年级上・江苏无锡惠山・期中)
Recently, a real-life “sugarcane-stealing” game in Meishan, Sichuan, has become a hit online. Players pick sugarcane in a special field, while hiding from patrolling NPCs and dogs. The owners, a couple, said their daily income can reach nearly 10,000 yuan on busy days.
Why is this game so popular? First, it offers people a great way to reduce stress. Modern life is filled with rules and tight schedules, making people feel bored—like calm lake water with no ripples. This game, full of surprise and excitement, shakes the “lake” and brings fun.
Besides, it brings back childhood memories. Many people once secretly picked fruits in fields as kids. One player said holding the sugarcane made him think of the carefree kid he used to be. So what attracts people is not the sugarcane, but the long-lost joy.
Also, this new farm experience is different from old rural tourism models. Before, tourists just took photos or picked fruits and left quickly. But this game improves that—turning the field into a real-life “escape room”, a popular activity these days. It’s a good example of how creativity can help rural industries.
However, there are possible problems. Some worry the “stealing” theme may be bad for kids. But as long as the owners make it clear it’s just a game, this isn’t a big issue. What’s more important is the safety risks—the owners must fix these to keep players safe.
1. What is the first reason for the game’s popularity?
A. It brings back childhood memories.
B. It helps people reduce stress.
C. It changes rural tourism.
D. It makes people more active.
2. What does the underlined word “shakes” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A. 摇晃 B. 平静 C. 污染 D. 创造
3. What is the difference between this game and old rural tourism?
A. It allows people to pick fruits.
B. It provides more photos for tourists.
C. It creates a more interactive experience.
D. It sells more farm products.
4. What can we learn from the passage?
A. The game is completely safe for everyone.
B. The “stealing” theme is bad for all kids.
C. Creativity helps rural industries develop.
D. Tourists only care about picking fruits.
Passage 3
(25-26 九年级上・江苏无锡宜兴・期中)
E-waste is fast becoming a serious problem around the world. What is e-waste? It includes all things with batteries or wires, such as computers, phones, TVs and fridges.
E-waste is bad for the earth. If people throw away e-waste directly, toxic chemicals can get into the soil and groundwater. They can pollute rivers and crops, and finally get into our bodies.
In 2022, the world made 59.4 million tons of e-waste. Only 17.4% of it was recycled properly. The rest was buried or burned, or just thrown away. This not only pollutes the environment but also wastes valuable resources. E-waste has many useful materials like gold, silver and copper. A ton of phones has more gold than a ton of gold ore.
Many countries are now taking action. For example, Apple now lets people trade in their old devices for new ones. It then repairs and resells them, or takes them apart to recycle materials. China has also made laws to stop people from throwing away e-waste randomly. People and companies must send e-waste to official recycling centers.
As users, we can also help. Try to keep our electronics as long as possible. Don’t buy new products just because they are fashionable. When we don’t want a device, give it to someone who needs it or take it to a recycling center.
1. Which of the following belongs to e-waste?
A. Wooden tables. B. Plastic bottles. C. Broken computers. D. Glass cups.
2. Why is e-waste bad for the earth?
A. It takes up too much space.
B. Toxic chemicals pollute the environment.
C. It can’t be recycled at all.
D. It wastes too much electricity.
3. What can we learn from Paragraph 3?
A. Most e-waste is recycled properly.
B. E-waste has no valuable materials.
C. Phones are made of gold and silver.
D. E-waste is both pollution and waste of resources.
4. What is the main idea of the last paragraph?
A. How Apple recycles old devices.
B. Laws about e-waste in China.
C. What we can do to help with e-waste.
D. Why we should keep electronics long.

Passage 1
(25-26 九年级上・江苏扬州高邮・期中)
Do you like blueberries? If so, the next time you’re about to eat these delicious berries, take a good look at them.
For the most part, blueberries aren’t blue. If you carefully take off the skin of one blueberry, you’ll see that the fruit inside is white. If you rub the inside of the skin on a white piece of paper, you’ll see a reddish-purple color. And if you gently rub the outside of a blueberry, the blue color disappears and the berry looks almost black. But the moment you pick one, it does look blue. What’s going on?
Well, there are two ways to create colors. The first is through pigments. Pigments show the color of the light they don’t take in. The most common pigment in plants is chlorophyll, a green pigment. Plant leaves appear green because chlorophyll doesn’t take in green light. It sends it out instead while taking in blue and red light. Plants prefer to take in blue light because it has more energy than any other light. In fact, there aren’t any “true blue” pigments in the plant world.
The second way to make color is through “structural color”. This happens when the surface makes some colors of light look different. Have you ever seen the rainbow colors on a CD? These colors show up because of the tiny spaces between the CD’s thin layers. These spaces only allow certain colors to reach our eyes.
Blueberries also create “structural color” in their own way. The berries look black when they’re ripe, but the plants build a thin layer of wax on their outside. This layer is only 0.4% of a centimeter thick, but it gives the berries their blue look. The blue color helps the plants because birds are attracted to the rare color. They eat the berries and spread the seeds far and wide.
1. After you gently rub the outside of a blueberry, it almost looks ______.
A. blue B. white C. black D. reddish-purple
2. Why do plant leaves look green?
A. Because chlorophyll takes in green light.
B. Because chlorophyll reflects green light.
C. Because green light has more energy.
D. Because plants have true green pigments.
3. Blueberries appear blue in the same way that ______.
A. a CD appears colorful
B. a tree leaf appears green
C. berries turn black when ripe
D. a flower has bright color
4. Which of the following shows the structure of this passage?
A. ①/②③/④⑤ B. ①②/③④/⑤ C. ①/②/③④/⑤ D. ①/②/③④⑤

Chinstrap penguins live in the cold Antarctic. They have to face many challenges to live there. For example, the winter is long and dark, and food is hard to find. Also, staying awake for 24 hours a day is hard for penguin parents.
Faced with these challenges, chinstrap penguins have found an unusual way to sleep. They don’t sleep for a long time at night like humans. Instead, they take thousands of short naps every day. Each nap lasts only about 4 seconds. They can do this while swimming, while eating, and even while protecting their babies.
Scientists studied a group of chinstrap penguins and found that the penguins took about 10,000 naps a day. All the short naps add up to about 11 hours of sleep every day. This is the same as the total sleep time of many other animals.
Why do they sleep this way? The biggest reason is safety. In the Antarctic, penguins are always in danger. They have to watch out for natural enemies all the time. If they sleep for a long time, they may not notice danger coming. Short naps let them rest and stay alert at the same time.
This special sleeping way is a wonderful adaptation to the cold and dangerous environment. It shows how amazing animals can be when they face challenges of nature.
1. What is the special way chinstrap penguins sleep?
A. They sleep for a long time at night.
B. They take thousands of short naps every day.
C. They sleep only while protecting babies.
D. They sleep 11 hours at a time.
2. How long is each nap of chinstrap penguins?
A. About 4 seconds. B. About 4 minutes. C. About 10 minutes. D. About 11 hours.
3. Why do chinstrap penguins sleep this way?
A. To keep themselves warm. B. To save more time for food.
C. To stay safe from danger. D. To rest their brains better.
4. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Animals can adapt to their environment in amazing ways.
B. All animals sleep the same way as humans.
C. Penguins sleep less than any other animal.
D. The Antarctic is a safe place for penguins.
Passage 3
(25-26 九年级上・江苏苏州・期中)
Heavy rainstorms hit South Carolina in the US in October 2015. According to the government, that Sunday was the wettest day in the history of Carolina. The rain poured down for days. Rivers rose and roads went under water. Hundreds of houses were flooded and thousands of people had to leave their homes.
The flooding also caused bad influence on the drinking water service in South Carolina's capital city. Many roads and bridges were washed out or under water. People could not go to work or school easily.
People in Columbia have also been helping one another. Rawlings LaMotte, 38, said he and a friend got into a small boat and transported several people to safety. He saved at least 12 people during the storm. “We just went out and looked for people who needed help,” LaMotte said. “You could see worry and fear on people’s faces. But it felt good to be able to help.”
Many volunteers worked day and night to help people in need. They gave out food, water and clean clothes. Some doctors and nurses set up temporary medical centers to look after sick and hurt people. It was a hard time for everyone, but people worked together to get through it.
1. What’s the first paragraph mainly about?
A. How the storm happened. B. How serious the storm was.

A. Produced. B. Greeted. C. Saved. D. Carried.
Passage 4
(25-26 九年级上・江苏镇江・期中)
The world’s coral reefs are in danger. Why are coral reefs important? What is hurting them? And what can we do to protect them?
Coral reefs are often called “the rainforests of the sea”. They cover less than 1% of the ocean floor, but they are home to 25% of all sea animals. Coral reefs also protect the coastlines from storms and waves. They even provide food and jobs for millions of people around the world.
However, coral reefs are dying fast. One of the biggest enemies is climate change. The ocean is getting warmer. When the water stays too warm for too long, corals get sick and lose their color. This is called “coral bleaching”. Corals can die if the bleaching lasts long.
Another big problem is pollution. Chemicals from farms and cities run into the ocean. They make the water too rich in nutrients, which causes too much algae to grow. The algae covers corals and stops them from getting sunlight. Plastic rubbish is also bad for corals.
Luckily, there are things we can do to help. We can cut down on pollution by using less plastic and choosing environmentally-friendly products. We can also tell our friends and family about the problem. Every small action makes a difference. Scientists are also trying to grow more corals in labs and put them back into the ocean.
1. Why are coral reefs called “the rainforests of the sea”?
A. Because they can make rain.
B. Because they are home to many sea animals.
C. Because they look like rainforests.
D. Because they are in warm places.
2. What is “coral bleaching”?
A. Corals become colorful.
B. Corals lose their color because of warm water.
C. Corals grow very fast.
D. Corals get more sunlight.
3. How does pollution hurt coral reefs?
A. It makes the water too cold.
B. It brings too many fish.
C. It causes algae to grow too much.
D. It kills all the plants in the sea.
4. What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A. Why coral reefs are important.
B. What is hurting coral reefs.
C. How we can protect coral reefs.
D. Where coral reefs are dying.

主题01 人与自我

While having Chinese classes, we are often amazed at how beautiful the ancient Chinese poems and articles are. However, these ancient texts can be quite difficult sometimes. It's challenging for many of us to understand them. Here is good news for us. Recently, a college research team from Nanjing, Jiangsu Province has created “Xunzi” to help with the understanding of Chinese ancient books and research on them.
Xunzi is a large language model (LLM) which includes a great number of Chinese ancient books and documents, like the collections of the “Complete Library in Four Sections”. It uses deep learning techniques and big data sets, and collects more than two billion Chinese characters and words. This LLM was named after Xunzi because he was not only a famous philosopher during the Warring States Period, but also a pioneer in presenting and explaining theories of linguistics in ancient China.
With the model, researchers can quickly summarize the ancient texts in order to know about the themes of the ancient books. It can also find key information from the ancient texts, such as characters, events and places. Last but not least, the model can help researchers translate the ancient texts into modern Chinese to fully understand them.
“The research on traditional Chinese classics is hard work even for professors, let alone for common learners. Passage 1
(25-26 九年级上・江苏扬州・期中)

(25-26 九年级上・江苏苏州四市联考・期中)
What Exactly Is a Rain Forest?
Rain forests are located around the equator. It is very warm around the equator. The rain forest stays at 75°F-80°F all year round. The rain forests are wet! Very wet! It evaporates, forms clouds, and then falls back to Earth as rain.
Gifts from the Rain Forest
The rain forests may seem very far away, but you use something from them every day! For example, do you like chocolate? Thank the rain forests! Rain forests are a huge source of food. Fruits such as mangoes and bananas come from the rain forests. So do many nuts, spices and coffee. Many medicines also come from rain forest plants. More than 25% of the medicines we use come from rain forest plants.

【答案】1. B 2. A 3. C 4. C

Passage 2
(25-26 九年级上・江苏常州・期中)
