People have wondered who built the Pyramids and how they did it without machines. Some people even guess they were built by aliens from other planets. Scientists are not really sure how the Egyptians built the Pyramids thousands of years ago. The Pyramids are made up of huge stone blocks (块). Most of them weigh about 2.5 tons, as heavy as two modern cars. It seems impossible to build such large Pyramids a few centuries ago before the wheel had been invented. So how could they move all those huge stones without wheels or modern machines? Here are two different ideas about how the Pyramids were built. Some scientists suppose the workers used huge ramps (斜坡) to move the stone blocks up into place. The ramps were made higher and longer as workers built the Pyramids. The ramps were covered with mud and water to help the blocks move easily. Other scientists think the blocks were put into place with huge levers made of trees. Whether it was ramps or levers, the Egyptians must have used simple machines to build those huge Pyramids. Most of the stones for Pyramids were taken from nearby places. Workers cut the limestone (石灰岩) into blocks and then rolled them on trees to the Pyramids. Other kinds of rocks used to build the Pyramids, like granite (花岗岩), were probably brought by boat from nearby places across the Nile River. 36. Sun Yat-sen and his friends C The Great Pyramid is the largest and tallest building on the earth. 36.
