Mike’s father was an architect (建筑师) and his mother was a librarian. When Mike came home from school, there was never anybody at home. He used to get the sandwich his mother always left for him in the kitchen. And then he used to start his homework on the computer. But this week he was working on a project about famous people in technology. He started to daydream!
I might be a programmer when I grow up!
I could make a lot of money!
I’d have my own helicopter to pick me up!
Wouldn’t that be funny?
The front door banged. It was Mike’s mother. She asked about his day. “I’ve been finding out about famous people in technology. Mark Zuckerberg was only twelve when he became a computer programmer. I’m twelve! I want to work too!” Mum laughed, “Work hard at school, you might be an architect like your dad one day.” Mike started daydreaming again.
I might be an architect in the future!
I might build flats and be a star in architecture!
Or build strange palaces for Kings!
The front door banged again. It must be his dad back from work. Good!
“Hello,” his father said, when Mike ran into the kitchen. “What have you been doing today?” Mike told him about Bill Gates—who gets $250 every second, and how he was now one of the most successful people in the world. “I’d like to start working,” he told his father.
“Try dog walking!” his dad suggested. “A lot of people don’t have time to walk their dogs.” His dad was only joking, but Mike started to daydream again.
I might be a dog walker. I may do it after school!
I could do that now!
I might start a company, that’d be so cool!
But I wonder how?
Mike asked Dad how to start a dog walking company. Dad suggested creating an app to connect with people whose dogs need to be walked. So Mike designed “Smart Dog Walking”, which quickly became popular. Soon, he was too busy walking dogs to daydream again.

Walking sharks were discovered in Indonesia. These sharks have fins different from any other animals, which allow them to walk across the sea bed. They are active during the night and usually prey on small fishes. The adults are about one meter long. They wriggle (扭动) their bodies like snakes, and their strange faces can be seen as funny. The males and females mix together, unlike other sharks. When they’re disturbed (打扰), they simply walk away, without trying to swim.
Sharks are not animals with feet, so how do they get to “walk” in water and on land? The sea these sharks stay in is not deep and filled with reefs (礁) and the oxygen (氧气) level could drop by 80%. It isn’t the appropriate environment for some animals. In order to look for food, these sharks gradually developed the ability to walk along the sea floor by moving forward with their fins. Excellent swimmers and now “walkers” make them top hunters. They’re known to walk across the reefs to search for their food in places where other animals can’t go and the small fishes have little chance of running away.
A walking shark can also stay out of water for about three hours. And most of them usually spend their lives in less than a mile from the reefs where they lay eggs. The walking shark can slow its heartbeat and power down its brain for more than an hour while it is out of water. That’s how they live on land.
The walking shark is an amazing and special animal that shows us how diverse (多样化) and unbelievable life in the ocean can be.
12. What can we learn about walking sharks from Paragraph 1?
A. They mainly eat small fishes.
B. They love to go out during the day.
C. They can walk across the sea bed quickly.
D. They are taller than any other animals in the ocean.
13. What does the underlined word “appropriate” in this passage probably mean?
A. strange B. Natural C. dangerous D. proper
14. What can we infer (推测) from the passage?
A. Walking sharks can swim faster. B. Walking sharks can survive in low oxygen environments.
C. Walking sharks can run away more quickly. D. Walking sharks can find their food more easily.
15. What is the purpose of the passage?
A. To tell a story about walking sharks. B. To explain why walking sharks are good swimmers.
C. To ask people to protect walking sharks. D. To introduce the special abilities of walking sharks.

List what you have, from what you love most to least. Maybe you’ll decide which one to let go of.
To help you decide, try an experiment. ____17____ At the end of the month, you might consider giving away what you didn’t use.

____19____ You might say, “When I hear you arguing, I feel worried and afraid.” You can also talk things over with a teacher.
Lots of kids (and adults) feel the same way you do. Try to understand the feeling better. You could ask yourself questions, like “When do I feel most afraid? Do noises or storms make it worse?”
Make a list of what you think can be scary about the dark. Then think about whether you really need to fear those things. Talk with a parent about the things on your list, too, and ways to handle them.
A. Notice what you use over a month’s time.
B. I am afraid of the dark, but I’m not sure why.
C. Many kids feel unhappy when their parents argue.

Dear Tony,
I’m sorry to hear your problem. I understand how you feel. Here is some advice for you.
First, you should have a heart-to-heart talk with your parents calmly. Tell them why you want to go. For example, you can learn much knowledge about nature and culture in Yunnan. It is helpful for your growth. Second, make a study plan to show them you are serious. Promise them that you will finish your homework before going. Also, you can take some books with you. This shows you care about your study. Third, listen to their opinions patiently. Communication is the key to solving problems.
I hope my advice helps. Good luck!
Yours,
Diana
