Years ago, I was travelling around Australia with two friends. At that time, both friends had to leave early because of work, so I decided to travel to the Whitsunday Islands alone.
I got on a boat. Everyone on the boat, except me, was with friends. Not wanting to talk to strangers, I decided to take photos. The back of the boat was a good place to catch the wonderful view of the sea.
I walked there and saw a metal box standing there. I put my arms on it, without knowing it was a hot barbecue (烧烤架)!
“My God, it hurts!” crying in pain, I moved my arms away at once.
Although there weren’t marks on my arms, I was in great pain. And I didn’t ever have friends with me. I sat alone, trying not to cry. Finally my arms turned purple.
People on the boat saw this and came to help me. One girl offered me a special scald cream (烫伤膏).
After treatment, I felt much better. I could enjoy the beauty of the Whitsundays, talk to strangers on the boat and have fun with them.

In today’s society, many young people worry about how they look, which leads to feelings of anxiety (焦虑).
In Japan, people are usually shyer and quieter than people in Western countries. This can make students less confident and stop them from showing who they are. For example, during the COVID-19 pandemic (新冠疫情), masks became a daily part of life. Even after the pandemic, many Japanese students still wore masks because they felt nervous about showing their faces.
In Sweden, many students worry about how they look, and social media is a big reason. The pictures students see online often show people who look perfect, and this makes them feel like they need to look the same. This problem gets worse because of apps like Photoshop, which make people look even more perfect. Students think they are not as good-looking as the people in these pictures and feel anxious.
In Mexico, students feel nervous about their looks, too. Ana, a 14-year-old, has seen some classmates get anxious when they get pimples (青春痘) and others talk about makeup tips and share cosmetics (化妆品) in the restroom. These worries are common among teenagers as their bodies change and grow. She thinks things like social pressure from friends, bullying (霸凌), and seeing pop stars influence these feelings. She says that overcoming these worries helps teenagers better understand and accept themselves. She also encourages everyone to focus on (关注) what they’re good at and remember that it’s okay to look different because nobody is perfect.
However, things get better in Singapore. Huang Luofei, a 13-year-old, noticed that not many people at her school worry about how they look. She believes this is because Singapore is a multicultural (多元文化的) country with many different ideas of beauty and style. People there care more about personality than appearance (外貌), and schools let students truly be themselves.
Do students in your country worry about how they look? What makes them feel this way? What do you think about it? Anyway, it’s important for you to remember that everyone is different and everyone can be beautiful in their own way.
36. Why do many Japanese students still wear masks even after the COVID-19 pandemic?
A. Because it’s a tradition in Japan.
B. Because masks are required by the school.
C. Because they feel nervous about showing their faces.
D. Because they think masks protect them from getting sick again.
37. What does the underlined word “this” in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A. The fact that Swedish students like sharing photos online.
B. The problem that Swedish students worry about their looks.
C. The situation that online pictures show perfect-looking people.
D. The trend that students use apps like Photoshop to edit photos.
38. What does Ana suggest teenagers do to overcome worries about their looks?
A. Spend more time learning makeup skills.
B. Compare themselves with perfect online pictures less.
C. Focus on their strong points and accept their differences.
D. Ask friends for advice on how to improve their appearance.
39. What can we infer from the passage?
A. All young people in the world worry about their appearance.
B. The reasons for students’ appearance anxiety are different among countries.
C. Social media is the main cause of appearance anxiety worldwide.
D. Students in Western countries are more confident than those in Asia.

Every day, millions of people around the world use plastic. They may eat with plastic forks or carry food in plastic bags. However, plastic doesn’t just disappear quickly from the environment. A lot of it ends up in the world’s oceans and causes harm to sea animals and the environment.
A report in 2024 brought some hope for this plastic problem. Scientists discovered a tiny fungus (真菌) in seawater that “eats up” plastic! They found it in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, a huge area in the Pacific Ocean filled with floating (漂浮的) plastic pieces. The fungus is called P. album. It lives naturally in the ocean. Scientists learnt that it can break down a type of plastic called polyethylene, which is one of the most common plastics and is widely used to make bags, bottles, and toys.
However, there is a condition. The fungus can only break down the plastic after it has been in the sunlight for some time. That’s because sunlight helps break down the plastic, making it easier for the fungus to use it as food.
Scientists did some tests to learn more about the fungus. They watched how it ate plastic over time. They found out that the fungus eats up the plastic pretty slowly and it turns most of the plastic into carbon dioxide (CO2), a greenhouse gas that causes climate change. However, the amount of the gas the fungus makes is quite small.
Although this discovery is exciting, there is still much to learn. Scientists believe there might be other fungi out there in the deep ocean that also feed on plastic. They will continue exploring so that they can better protect our planet.
41. How does the writer lead into the topic of the fungus?
A. By describing different types of plastics.
B. By introducing scientists’ research on oceans.
C. By discussing the importance of ocean protection.

42. What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 3 refer to?

A. It needs sunlight to grow.
B. It breaks plastic down slowly.
C. It feeds on other fungi in the deep ocean.
D. It makes a large amount of greenhouse gas.
44. What’s the structure of the text?
A. Opinion — Reasons — Conclusion. B. Problem — Solution — Final result.
C. Problem — Discovery — Future plan. D. Question — Discussion — Conclusion.
45. Why does the writer write the text?
A. To call on people to stop using plastic products.

C. To introduce a possible solution to plastic problems.
D. To explain how plastic ends up in the Pacific Ocean.

Have you ever noticed how some cities feel cooler than others on hot summer days? The answer often comes from a simple idea called “city green space”. ____46____ Unlike usual concrete (混凝土) roads and tall buildings, this idea uses plants, trees and small water spots to make city life better.
City green space brings many good things to cities. ____47____ For example, trees can make shade (阴凉), which makes nearby streets 3 to 5 degrees cooler. This is really helpful in summer when hot weather makes cities hard to live in.
____48____ When it rains a lot, green places like parks and grasslands can soak up (吸收) rainwater. This stops streets from being covered in water and lowers the risk of water hurting homes and shops.
Besides controlling temperature, it also makes people feel better. ____49____ Having more parks and green areas gives people a quiet place to relax, do exercise or spend time with family. This helps make both their minds and bodies healthier.
However, making city green spaces takes time and money. ____50____ With good planning, more cities around the world can become greener, cooler and healthier places to live in the future.
A. It also helps deal with rainwater well.
B. It means all the natural and man-made green places in a city.
C. Cities need to work with experts to plan the right green spaces.
D. One of the most important good things is making cities cooler.
E. Many people feel worried because of busy work and loud traffic.
【答案】46. B 47. D 48. A 49. E 50. C

It’s not the conventional way to meet people, but it shows even burning your arms can become part of your trip, and make your trip better in the end.
