Our parents and teachers always tell us to “sit up straight” and “stand tall”. But why do they say that? Is it just because they want us to look pretty? Or is there something more to it?
The truth is that how we hold our bodies can be important for our health. Meghan, a doctor, says slouching (低头垂肩地站或坐、走) can lead to sore necks, back problems, and even trouble with breathing. So maybe our parents and teachers are onto something.
However, some experts say we shouldn’t worry too much about slouching. They say that our spines (脊椎) are stronger than we think and that differences in how we stand or sit are just part of life.
So what does this mean? Should we all be sitting up straight all the time? Can we slouch for hours? No! The experts agree that we shouldn’t stay in one position (姿势) for too long. Our bodies are meant to move around, not to be glued to a chair all day. If we’re always sitting up straight to work on a computer or slouching to use a phone, that might cause us some trouble.
The key is to keep our bodies active and change positions often. That way, we can avoid getting stuck (动不了) in a slouch. We should also make sure we take breaks and stretch muscles (伸展肌肉) from time to time. That will help us feel light in our steps.
Anyway, don’t worry too much if you catch yourself slouching sometimes. A little slouching here and there probably won’t break your back. Just remember to sit up straight and stand tall now and then. Your body will thank you for it.
43. What problems can be caused when we slouch?
A. Toothaches. B. Sore throats.
C. Stomachaches. D. Breathing problems.
44. Which of the following opinions belongs to the experts in Paragraph 3?
A. Slouching is normal in life.
B. Slouching is important for health.
C. People should avoid sitting up too straight.
D. People must start worrying about slouching.
45. What’s the main idea of Paragraph 4?
A. We should take longer breaks every day.
B. We should stretch muscles as much as we can.
C. We shouldn’t stay in one position for too long.
D. We shouldn’t spend too much time on a phone.
46. What does the underlined word “it” in the last paragraph refer to?
A. Slouching now and then.
B. Taking breaks now and then.
C. Standing tall and sitting up straight from time to time.
D. Moving around and stretching muscles from time to time.
47. Which of the following magazines might the passage come from?
A. Music Times. B. Sports Today.
C. Words & Worlds. D. Young & Healthy.

Every summer, people form long lines outside shops selling ice-cream as they look for a tasty way to cool themselves down. However, how much do you know about this delicious food? Do you know who invented it? Do you know how many kinds of ice-cream there are?
In fact, nobody is really sure who invented it.
But there are records of people making iced food in 200 B.C. in China. In the 1st century A.D., the Roman emperor Nero enjoyed ice flavored (加味) with honey and nuts (坚果). One of the first examples of milk-based ice-cream can be dated back to the Tang Dynasty in China, when flour (面粉) and milk were mixed with snow. Ice-cream arrived in Europe in the 16th century, and it quickly became popular in Italy and France.
The first record of ice-cream being served in the UK is in 1671, at a feast (宴会) for King Charles II. At first, ice-cream was considered a kind of luxury food. It was only eaten by the very richest people in Britain. In the 19th century, ice-cream began to be sold to the public but it was served in glasses. Customers had to return the glasses. Around 1940, “soft serve” ice-cream was invented, which is more convenient for transportation (运输) and has become the most popular kind of ice-cream enjoyed today.
In Germany, you can buy “spaghetti” ice-cream, made by pressing ice-cream through a potato ricer to look like noodles and topped with strawberry sauce (酱) and white chocolate. In Thailand, people make ice-cream by pouring the mixture onto a frozen steel plate and turning it into rolls (卷), known as "rolled ice-cream". In India and Pakistan, kulfi—a thick, sweet, creamy version (种类)—is made by boiling the mixture and then freezing it.
These days, ice-cream is getting more popular across the world. Customers want new, exciting flavors, and lots of people are turning to vegan (纯素的) ice-cream because they don’t want to eat milk and cream. Next time you enjoy ice-cream, just think: you’re enjoying a treat that is thousands of years old.
48. According to the passage, milk-based ice-cream was first found in________.
A. 200 B.C. in China B. 100 A.D. in Rome
C. the Tang Dynasty in China D. the 16th century in Europe

A. delicious B. expensive C. common D. popular

A. The kinds of ice-cream in the UK.
B. The popularity of ice-cream in the UK.
C. The development of ice-cream in the UK.
D. The challenges of transporting ice-cream in the UK.
51. Which kind of ice-cream is a local treat in Thailand?
A. B. C. D.
52. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A. Vegan ice-cream is getting popular these days.
B. Ice-cream arrived in the UK earlier than in Italy.

B. Slouching is important for health.

49. The underlined word “luxury” in Paragraph 4 is closest in meaning to “_________”.
A. delicious B. expensive C. common D. popular

C. “Soft serve” ice-cream appeared in the 19th century.

【答案】例文:
Dear Mike,
I’m sorry to hear that you’re feeling a lot of stress and having trouble sleeping. I have some advice that may help you relax and sleep well.
First, get some exercise during the day. It can help you fall asleep easily at night. Then, avoid using electronic devices before going to bed. Many of us like to play with phones or computers to relax before going to bed, but this can make it harder to fall asleep. Instead, try listening to soft music or doing some reading to help you relax. Finally, if you’re still feeling stressed and can’t get enough sleep, you’d better talk about it with your teachers or parents. I believe they can give a helping hand.
Hope the advice above can help you get better sleep!
Yours,
Li Hua
