June 6: Paper Structures. Build a tower using six sheets of paper. No tape is allowed. Compare shapes and find ways to make the tower stand.
June 13: Useful Handles. Make a handle for a light box. A volunteer will explain how different shapes feel in the hand. All tools and materials are provided.
June 20: Design for Others. Talk to a partner about a daily difficulty, draw a design and explain how it helps. No working model is required this week.
June 27: Test and Improve. Bring one small model you have made. Other students will try it and give advice. Do not bring valuable objects or electrical machines.
Book at the front desk at least two days before each activity. You may join more than one week, but each visit needs a separate booking. The activities are about learning, so there will be no prizes for the “best” invention.

When Chen's father brought home a new table lamp, Chen kept the empty box. “Don't throw it away yet,” he said. His younger sister needed a small stage for her paper animals.
Chen cut an opening in the front with his father's help. He painted the back blue and added a paper tree. His sister liked the stage, but her animals fell whenever she moved them. Chen thought the work was finished, yet the real user had found a problem.
He tried sticking the animals directly to the stage. They stood, but they could not move. Next, he placed each animal on a folded paper base. This worked better. His sister could move the animals and change the story.
Then she asked for a road. Chen almost said no because the stage was already full. Instead, he asked her to show him how she wanted to play. They removed one large tree and drew a narrow road together.
The stage was never entered in a competition. It stayed in their living room and was used almost every evening. Chen's favorite moment was hearing his sister create a new story. He learned that a design was successful when it helped someone do what they wanted to do.
51. What did Chen use to make the stage?
A. An old television. B. A metal door.
C. An empty lamp box. D. A new wooden desk.
52. What problem did his sister find first?
A. The box was too expensive. B. The blue paint was missing.
C. The paper animals kept falling. D. The stage had no opening.
53. Why did sticking animals to the stage fail?
A. The paper became wet. B. The stories were too long.
C. The stage disappeared. D. The animals could not move.
54. How did Chen make room for a road?
A. He bought another house. B. He stopped his sister playing.
C. He removed a large tree. D. He cut off every animal.
55. What made the design successful for Chen?
A. It cost more than other toys. B. His sister enjoyed using it.
C. It won a large prize. D. It was never changed.
C
Our class tested two ways of carrying books. Design One was a simple cloth bag. Design Two used the same bag with a wider handle. We wanted to know whether the handle made a difference.
Six students took part. Each carried three of the same books for one minute with each design. They used the same route and rested between the two walks. Three students tried Design One first; the other three began with Design Two.
After each walk, students marked comfort from one to five. Five meant very comfortable. The average score for Design One was 2.5, while Design Two received 4.0. Four students preferred the wider handle, one preferred the narrow one, and one had no preference.
These results encouraged us, but they did not prove that wider handles are always better. We had tested only six students and a short walk. A wider handle might also use more material. Before making a large number, we needed to ask more users and try heavier books.
Testing helped us move beyond “I like it.” We could explain what we had changed, how we compared the designs and what we still did not know. That was more useful than simply choosing the most popular color.
56. What was changed in Design Two?
A. The number of books. B. The width of the handle.
C. The color of all books. D. The length of the route.
57. How many students took part?
A. Four. B. Six.
C. Five. D. Three.
58. Which design received a higher average comfort score?
A. Design One. B. Both received 2.5.
C. Design Two. D. Both received 4.0.
59. Why did the class need more tests?
A. The number of users and test time were limited.
B. The bags had never been used.
C. They forgot which books they used.
D. Every student disliked both designs.
60. What did the writer value most?
A. Avoiding all changes. B. Choosing a popular color.
C. Explaining the test and its limits. D. Proving every user is the same.
D
People sometimes mix up discovering and inventing. A discovery brings something that already exists to our attention. An invention creates a new object or a new way of doing something.
For example, a student may discover that one part of the playground stays wet after rain. The water was already there. If the student designs a tool to collect it for the school garden, that is a step toward invention. The two activities can work together: a careful discovery may lead to a useful idea.
However, having an idea does not mean that the invention is ready. The tool must be built and tested. Will it collect enough water? Can it be cleaned? Is it safe for younger children? These questions turn an interesting thought into serious work.
We should also be careful when telling invention stories. Many useful objects improve over time through the efforts of different people. A short story about a single “magic moment” may leave out years of testing and teamwork.
Curiosity helps us notice things. Creativity helps us imagine changes. Patience and cooperation help us make those changes work. In everyday learning, we need all of these qualities, not just a sudden bright idea.
61. What is a discovery according to the passage?
A. Making every old object new. B. Writing an advertisement.
C. Buying a useful machine. D. Noticing something that already exists.
62. What does the playground example show?
A. Tools cannot collect water. B. Students should avoid asking questions.
C. A discovery may lead to an invention. D. Rain always damages every garden.
63. What is needed after an idea is formed?
A. Hiding it from users. B. Building and testing it.
C. Calling it perfect at once. D. Stopping all questions.
64. Why can a “magic moment” story be incomplete?
A. It contains no objects. B. It always names too many people.
C. It is always longer than a book. D. It may leave out testing and teamwork.
65. What does the writer encourage?
A. Choosing fame before usefulness. B. Only waiting for a sudden idea.
C. Curiosity, creativity and patient work. D. Refusing help from others.

How to Turn an Idea into an Invention
A useful invention often starts with a small problem.
First, we should observe daily life and ask people about their needs. Next, we can draw a design and make a list of materials. When the plan is ready, we can build a simple model. We should ask a teacher or parent for help with dangerous tools. Then let someone test the model and record the results. If it does not work well, listen to advice and improve it. I believe patience is important. We should never give up after just one failed test.
写作思路:按发现、计划制作、测试改进写清步骤;使用First、Next、Then等连接词,表达坚持与安全意识。

M: Our paper boat sank after one minute.
W: Did you put too many coins in it?
M: Maybe. We put twenty in at once.
W: Let's start with one and add more slowly. We should count them.

Our model show will be on Tuesday in Room Five. Please bring your model in a box so it does not break on the way. Put a card beside it. Write the name of the model and explain its use. Each student has two minutes to speak. After the talk, answer one question from a classmate. We will take photos, but we will not choose a winner. The aim is to learn from one another.
