It’s very important to know yourself. It’s helpful to choose your own job in the future. Everyone goes through mental and physical changes during adolescence (青春期). If you know yourself, you’ll deal with different kinds of stress more easily and you’ll be more successful as well. Although adolescence is difficult, it’ll be much easier if you try to manage your feelings better. Here are a few skills for you to deal with your feelings.
Know about your feelings.
What feelings are you experiencing? For example, are you sad, stressed, angry, joyful or excited? You must know your own feelings now.
Accept your feelings.
Many people don’t want others to know their feelings. They always hide their true feelings. They think these feelings will go away over time. But they aren’t right. Remind yourself that it’s OK to feel your feelings.
Be familiar with your feelings.
How to understand your own feelings better? You can record how you’re feeling in the morning, afternoon and at night in a notebook. And you should also write down the changes in your body at different times.
Express your feelings.
Expressing your feelings in the right way is one of the best ways to make them disappear. You can cry, exercise, go shopping or talk to someone you trust. But no matter how you express your feelings, you can’t hurt yourself or others.
In your life, you may experience many different feelings. But as long as you deal with these feelings in the right way, you’ll be able to live comfortably.

Have you ever wondered why you are the way you are? Scientists have been studying personality for decades, and their findings are fascinating.
One of the most widely accepted models is the “Big Five” personality traits: openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism. These five traits are believed to cover most of the differences in human personality. Studies suggest that about 40–60% of your personality comes from your genes, while the rest is shaped by your environment.
Culture also plays an important role in shaping personality. Studies have found that people in East Asian cultures often score higher on conscientiousness and lower on extraversion compared to Westerners. This does not mean East Asians are “born” more hardworking — rather, their culture values these traits more, which encourages people to develop them.
Interestingly, personality can even affect your health. People who score high on conscientiousness tend to live longer, partly because they take better care of themselves — they exercise more, eat healthier, and are less likely to take risks. On the other hand, people high in neuroticism may experience more stress, which can harm their physical health over time.
The most important thing to remember is that no personality type is “better” than others. Every personality has its strengths. Being quiet and introverted can make you a better listener. Being outgoing can help you build connections. The key is to understand yourself and make the most of who you are.
1.According to the passage, what percentage of personality may come from genes?
A.Less than 20%. B.About 30%. C.About 40–60%. D.More than 80%.
2.Which of the following is NOT one of the “Big Five” personality traits?
A.Openness. B.Creativity. C.Extraversion. D.Neuroticism.
3.What does the passage say about personality and culture?
A.Culture has no effect on personality.
B.East Asians are born more hardworking.
C.Different cultures value different personality traits.
D.Western people are always more outgoing.
4.Why do highly conscientious people tend to live longer?
A.They have better genes. B.They take better care of themselves.
C.They are more sociable. D.They experience less stress.
5.What is the author’s main message in the last paragraph?
A.Some personalities are better. B.You should change your personality.
C.Every personality has value. D.Personality cannot be changed.
【答案】1.C 2.B 3.C 4.B 5.C

For fifteen years, James worked as an accountant in a big company. Every day, he sat at his desk, staring at rows of numbers and filling in forms. The pay was good, and his parents were proud of him. But every morning, James felt a heavy weight on his chest as he walked into the office. He was not unhappy exactly—he was just empty.
One weekend, James visited his old high school. He walked past the art room and looked through the window. Inside, students were painting, laughing and covered in colourful paint. James stood there for a long time. He remembered that he used to love drawing when he was a teenager. His art teacher once told him, “You have a gift, James. Don’t let it die.” But his parents had said art was not a real job, so he had put down his pencils and picked up a calculator.
That night, James could not sleep. He kept thinking about the students in the art room—how alive they looked. He realized that he had been living someone else’s dream for fifteen years. The next morning, he went to a stationery shop and bought a set of paints and brushes. That evening, after work, he painted for the first time in years. His hands were shaky, but his heart was full.
Six months later, James handed in his resignation. His colleagues thought he was crazy. “You are giving up a safe job for paint and paper?” they asked. James just smiled. He started a small art studio in his garage, teaching children to paint on weekends. The money was less, but the weight on his chest was gone. He had finally found his voice.
James often tells his students, “Your life is a canvas. Don’t let anyone else hold the brush.” He knows now that success is not about how much money you make. It is about waking up every morning and feeling grateful for the day ahead.
1.Why did James feel empty even though his job was well-paid?
A.He did not get along with his colleagues B.His parents were not satisfied with him
C.He had to work very long hours every day D.The job did not match his true interest
2.What made James think about his old love for drawing?
A.A letter from his old art teacher B.Seeing students painting in the art room
C.A conversation with his parents D.Reading a book about famous artists
3.What does the writer mean by saying “Your life is a canvas. Don’t let anyone else hold the brush”?
A.You should control your own life and choices
B.Everyone should learn to paint well
C.Painting is the best way to become successful
D.Other people can make your life more colourful
4.What can we learn from James’s story?
A.A safe job is always the best choice B.Parents’ advice should always be followed
C.Following your heart can bring true happiness D.It is too late to change jobs when you are old
【答案】1.D 2.B 3.A 4.C

While you might have thought preferring chocolate to vanilla was all about your taste, it turns out that your ice cream choosing may have more to do with your personality.
According to a new study, your favourite ice cream taste can tell all kinds of things, from the age when youˈll find love to your taste in films.
In the study, which was conducted for ice cream company Breyers by OnePoll, 2,000 Americans were divided into three parts, by whether they prefer chocolate, vanilla, or strawberry ice cream. The study found that fans of strawberry ice cream tend to find love at the youngest age, at the age of 24. This was followed by vanilla fans, who fall in love around the age of 25, and chocolate fans, who tend to find love at the age of 26.
The study also found that strawberry ice cream lovers are more likely to listen to jazz and enjoy science fiction films. They also tend to enjoy washing clothes. Vanilla fans, on the other hand, donˈt like washing clothes—although theyˈre happy to wash the dishes. They also tend to stay up late, love dogs, and are introverts. Vanilla ice cream eaters are quite different from those who prefer chocolate. Chocolate ice cream lovers are more likely to be extroverts. They also love watching romantic films and prefer to listen to pop and rock music.
▲ According to a study conducted by Baskin-Robbins and Juliet A.Boghossian, those who like ice cream cones “are people who lead with their heart”. Sugar cone eaters “are funny and enjoy the life of the party”, while those who prefer waffle cones to holding their spoons of ice cream “tend to be the host of the party, and are usually caregivers”. Meanwhile, people who prefer to eat their ice cream out of a bowl or a cup “are rational thinkers”. Those who prefer their ice cream without the cone also “are dependable, family-centred and hard-working”.

①Public affairs (公共事务), including social, economic, political or business activities, etc, usually influence almost everyone in the society. When it comes to public affairs, some people think that young people are becoming less interested in them. However, that’s not the case.
②Nowadays, people no longer have to wait for a copy of the local or international newspaper to be published before they can learn about the latest event. Only a few people keep the habit of getting information from a specific news media at a fixed time. In fact, gone are the days when people had to depend on newspapers or televisions to know about world events. Technology has greatly helped spread information and everyone, especially young people, can get it any time anywhere.
③As technology develops, websites and apps used for social networking are increasing at an amazing speed, so more chances are provided for young people to learn about public affairs. A survey carried out recently has shown that 94% of young people get up-to-date news from social media platforms at least a few times a day. What’s more, over 65% of them even discuss some serious problems and post their thoughts online on topics like green energy and space exploration. More and more young people make their voices heard about public affairs and offer some advice online. This wave of actions shows that they surely care about our society and would like to make efforts to make it better.
④Besides, young people pay more attention to climate change and are taking an active part in environmental protection for our planet. For example, a 25-year-old girl has planted 150,000 trees and trained hundreds of community members in raising bees. This girl is among millions of young people who are taking the responsibility (责任) of our society.

① We all have trouble, and often make mistakes. However, many of us find it hard to admit (承认) them to others. So most of us would keep the problems to ourselves. We believe that our trouble and mistakes show our weakness, and we are afraid to let others think we are not good enough.
② The good news is that our worries about the negative (负面的) evaluations (评价) from others may not seem as serious as we imagine. Research suggests that we see our act of showing weakness negatively, but others may not think so. And researchers call this the “beautiful mess effect (效应)”. That means ▲ .
③ This effect can stop us from sharing our true feelings and needs. But sharing feelings can actually have many advantages. For example, studies show that sharing personal information about oneself may help build closeness and trust, while saying sorry sincerely could repair a broken relationship.
④ Some researchers wanted to know how we could deal with the “beautiful mess effect”. Their new experiments (实验) suggest that being self-compassionate (自我同情的) can help.
⑤ In the study, researchers invited 340 university students who had different levels of self-compassion to take part in four experiments. In one of them, students were asked to imagine themselves admitting that they’d made a big mistake. At the same time, they also imagined another person admitting the same mistake. Then, students needed to evaluate this act: Did they see it as an act of showing one’s courage or weakness?
⑥ The study showed that students with low self-compassion evaluated their own act more negatively. Highly self-compassionate students, on the other hand, were not much influenced by the “beautiful mess effect”. They were more likely to see admitting mistakes as courage. In a word, self-compassion helps us evaluate our act of showing weakness more fairly, stopping us from being too hard on ourselves.
⑦ Luckily, our level of self-compassion is not fixed and can be raised if we want to. If we love ourselves, we can become more comfortable with showing our weakness. This practice can improve our relationships.
1.Why do people keep their problems to themselves according to the passage?
A.To make fewer mistakes. B.To get their problems right.
C.To protect their personal information. D.To keep away from negative evaluations.
2.Which sentence can be put in “ ▲ ”?
A.we may not be such a mess as we think
B.other people always think highly of us
C.we need to share our true feelings and needs
D.we shouldn’t deal with “beautiful mess effect”
3.What does the underlined word “it” refer to in Paragraph 5?
A.Taking part in four experiments. B.Evaluating this act.
C.Admitting their or others’ mistakes. D.Having different self-compassion.
4.Which of the following is TRUE?
A.It will be harder to share our weakness if we love ourselves.
B.All the students in the experiment see admitting mistakes as courage.
C.Sharing true feelings helps to build a better relationship with others.
D.People with high self-compassion were more influenced by the “beautiful mess effect”.
5.Which of the following shows the structure of the passage?
A. B. C. D.
【答案】1.D 2.A 3.C 4.C 5.A

Nowadays, people are used to getting quick answers from the Internet. When meeting difficulties, most teenagers prefer to search for ready-made solutions online instead of thinking independently. This habit has gradually weakened their ability to deal with challenges by themselves. However, slow thinking is becoming more and more important in modern life.
Slow thinking means taking time to analyze problems, consider different sides and find out deep causes. It is not about being slow-minded, but about thinking carefully and deeply. Quick answers are often simple and surface-level. They can solve small daily problems, but fail to help people face long-term challenges. For example, if a student only copies online answers for homework, he will never truly understand knowledge. When facing new exam problems, he will still feel helpless.
Many successful people depend on slow thinking. Marie Curie spent years doing repeated experiments to discover radium. She never gave up after hundreds of failures and thought slowly about each result. Her patience and deep thinking finally led to great achievements. Similarly, great writers and artists always spend a long time improving their works instead of finishing them quickly.
Slow thinking also helps people make better decisions. In a fast-paced world, people are easily influenced by hot topics or others’ opinions. If we slow down to think,we can tell right from wrong and avoid blind choices. For teenagers, slow thinking is a necessary skill. It helps them build strong minds, face future difficulties bravely and grow into independent thinkers.
We cannot always get perfect results in a short time. True progress comes from deep thinking and long-time efforts. Only when we learn to slow down can we see further and go further in life.
1.What do most teenagers do when they meet problems now?
A.They try to solve them by slow thinking.
B.They search for ready-made answers online.
C.They ask successful people for advice.
D.They analyze problems from different sides.
2.What can we infer from Marie Curie’s example?
A.Quick answers can solve most serious problems.
B.Slow thinking brings great achievements with patience.
C.Repeated experiments are useless for scientific research.
D.People should finish their work as quickly as possible.
3.What is the main idea of the passage?
A.Teenagers should give up using the Internet.
B.Quick thinking is more important than slow thinking.
C.Slow thinking helps people make progress in life.
D.Successful people never meet difficulties in their life.
【答案】1.B 2.B 3.C

Have you ever tried squatting down (蹲下) to see the world from a “1-meter height”?
In 2022, China started the building of child-friendly cities in 14 cities, including Beijing, Changsha, Shenzhen, and Ningbo. By 2025, China will carry out 100 pilot projects for child-friendly cities nationwide.
Building child-friendly cities is not only a national policy but also a reshaping(重塑) of urban (城市的) environments, Xinhua noted. This will make better places for children in services, rights, and play areas.
The 14 cities have introduced child-friendly features (特点) such as local 70-centimeter-tall trash bins, 50-centimeter-high handrails (扶手) in hospitals,140-centimeter-high handles on buses, and child- friendly sinks (水槽) in public restrooms, according to People’s Daily.
Communities are also creating spaces that better serve children. The recently completed Guangzhou Guangji Community Children’s Park is one such example. People have turned the park into a bright yellow playground. Children can have fun on expanded game walls(拓展游戏墙) and there is even a running track for toddlers (幼儿).
However, there are still many problems in building child-friendly cities. For example, parents and teachers often make decisions for children. It’s important to listen to children’s voices and let them take part in the decision-making processes, said WangHuifang, a researcher at the Natural Resources and Planning Bureau in Changsha, Hunan.
Shenzhen is working on this problem. In 2023, a children’s council(委员会) was made in the city, where children can discuss things such as weekend activities and how to use space in their community.

A.He did not get along with his colleagues B.His parents were not satisfied with him
C.He had to work very long hours every day D.The job did not match his true interest

C.Following your heart can bring true happiness D.It is too late to change jobs when you are old
While you might have thought preferring chocolate to vanilla was all about your taste, it turns out that your ice cream choosing may have more to do with your personality.

Do you know how to deal with your feelings when you are upset? Everyone may feel sad, worried or angry sometimes. These feelings are normal, but if you keep bad feelings inside for too long, they will be bad for your health and study. Here are some useful ways to cheer yourself up when you are in a bad mood.
First, talk to someone you trust. Many teenagers choose to keep their problems to themselves. They are afraid that others will laugh at them or think they are strange. In fact, talking is the best way to release stress. You can talk to your parents, teachers or close friends. When you share your trouble with them, they may give you some useful advice. Just speaking out your feelings will also make you feel relaxed.
Second, do some sports or outdoor activities. Doing exercise can make your body produce special things that make you happy. You can go running, play basketball or swim in your free time. If you don’t like sports, you can take a walk in the park, enjoy the fresh air and beautiful flowers. Being close to nature can calm your mind and drive away bad moods.
Third, do something you enjoy. Everyone has hobbies. You can read interesting storybooks, listen to soft music or draw pictures. Hobbies can take your attention away from your troubles. When you put your heart into your favorite things, you will forget unhappiness little by little. You can also watch funny cartoons or comedies. Laughter is the best medicine for a bad mood.
Fourth, learn to think in a different way. Sometimes bad feelings come from our wrong ideas. If you fail an exam, don’t always think you are stupid. Instead, find out the reasons and try to do better next time. Learn to accept small mistakes and encourage yourself all the time.

A. B. C. D.
