Do you remember the modern art piece that everyone has been talking about? Yes, it's the banana taped to the wall at the Art Basel Gallery.Well, David, an artist from New York walked into the gallery yesterday, took the banana from the wall, and ate it. He said his performance was called “Hungry Artist". The artwork was originally sold for 120 thousand dollars. The strangest thing about this story is that no legal action will be taken against David. Another banana will simply be taped to the wall. The art gallery director said that the price of the artwork was for the idea, and the banana was meant to be replaced. It makes sense, because pretty soon that banana is going to go bad, right, folks? Stay tuned for traffic, weather and politics coming at you in that order right after this commercial break.

When I was seven, I moved to Anaheim, California with my grandparents. I was nervous about a new school and new friends, but what I dreaded most was getting updated vaccinations (接种) before school started.
A week before term began, I sat on the doctor’s exam table, dreading the tetanus (破伤风) shot. I was promised a balloon as a reward, which made the pain bearable. I took the injection bravely without crying, imagining fun games with the balloon. And I definitely planned on rubbing the balloon on my hair to make it stand on end so I could look like a member of KISS, my favorite band at the time.
The doctor returned with a concerned look on his face and delivered the tragic news. “I’m sorry, but we’re out of balloons.” All my big plans for that balloon popped faster than that balloon ever would have. I was overcome with disappointment.
The entire way home, my grandma kept telling me that I should think positively, and that we had a pack of balloons at home that I could blow up. But I refused to cheer up. Those ordinary balloons would never be as good as the balloon from the doctor’s office, for they lacked helium to float and I had not earned them through the painful shot.
I dragged myself into the house, upset and disappointed. When I walked to the backyard to pour out my sadness to my dog, I was shocked to see the whole yard filled with floating balloons. I jumped with joy, running and dancing among them.
We lived less than a mile from Disneyland. As it turned out, when the wind was right, the balloons released from the daily parades would land neatly in our backyard. I will never forget that day of dancing through those balloons and thinking they were all for me because I had to get my shots. And I will never forget my grandmother telling me throughout my life that if you just think positive thoughts, everything has a way of working out in the end.
24.What made the author willing to stand the pain of the vaccination?
A.The small gift she longed for.
B.The chance to visit Disneyland nearby.
C.The encouragement from her grandma.
D.The hope of making new friends at school.
25.How did the author feel after arriving home?
A.She became eager to play with balloons at home.
B.She was convinced by grandma’s words.
C.She remained low-spirited and dissatisfied.
D.She felt relaxed after talking with her dog.
26.Why did the floating balloons turn up in the author’s backyard?
A.Someone prepared them as a surprise for her.
B.They were blown there at random.
C.The doctor sent them to make up for his promise.
D.Her grandma bought them to lift her spirits.
27.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Happiness from Small Toys B.My Pleasant Experience in Disneyland
C.A Lesson Learned from a Doctor D.A Fearful Doctor Visit Ends in Magic
【答案】24.A 25.C 26.B 27.D
根据第二段中的“I was promised a balloon as a reward, which made the pain bearable.(医生承诺会给我一个气球作为奖励,这让疼痛变得可以忍受。)”
根据第四段中的“But I refused to cheer up. Those ordinary balloons would never be as good as the balloon from the doctor’s office(但我开心不起来。家里那些普通气球永远比不上诊所里的气球)”以及第五段 “I dragged myself into the house, upset and disappointed.(我拖着步子进屋,满心沮丧失望)”可知,到家后作者依旧情绪低落、不满意。
26.细节理解题。根据最后一段中的“As it turned out, when the wind was right, the balloons released from the daily parades would land neatly in our backyard.(事实原来是,风向合适的时候,迪士尼每日游行放飞的气球就会落到我们家后院。)”
C
For decades, the story of coastal risk has been dominated by climate change and rising seas. But a new global study suggests that, for hundreds of millions of people living on river deltas (三角洲) — including cities like New Orleans and Bangkok — an even more immediate threat is unfolding beneath their feet. Across much of the world, the land itself is sinking, and in many places, it’s sinking faster than the ocean is rising.
“It’s a real call to action,” said Professor Robert Nicholls, a coastal scientist and co-author of the study. “Before this, nobody had a global view of delta sinking. This study shows how common the problem is and really highlights the need to respond.”
Researchers analysed satellite data across 40 major river deltas from 2014 to 2024, creating the first high-resolution global picture of how fast land is rising or falling. The findings were striking. At least 35 percent of delta land is currently sinking, and in most deltas, more than half of the surface is going down. In 18 of the 40 deltas, the ground is sinking faster than local sea levels are rising.
The study looked at three human-linked drivers of land sinking: groundwater extraction (开采), reduced sediment (沉积物) supply, and urban expansion. Of these, groundwater extraction stood out as the strongest overall predictor. When water is removed from underground, the soft sediments begin to collapse and press together. Crucially, this process cannot be changed: once sediments squeeze together, they do not spring back even when water returns.
The authors argue that sinking land has been dangerously overlooked in global climate-risk planning, partly because it is seen as a local problem rather than a global one. But local does not mean small. In many deltas, sinking land will remain the main driver of relative sea-level rise for decades. Once land has sunk, lifting cities is not an option, and communities may face hard choices about moving away. As Nicholls put it, “The first key thing is to recognise there’s a problem.”
28.How did Robert Nicholls feel when speaking in paragraph 2?
A.Satisfied. B.Frightened. C.Excited. D.Concerned.
29.What does the new study mainly show?
A.Land sinking can be measured by satellite.
B.Coastal people take land sinking for granted.
C.Land sinking is becoming a global phenomenon.
D.Land sinking causes more damage than other disasters.
30.What is the major cause of fast land sinking?
A.Humans pump out groundwater.
B.The urban areas are expanding fast.
C.Too much sediment is taken away.
D.Soft land is more likely to lose.
31.What is the main idea of the text?
A.Land sinks faster than sea levels rise everywhere.
B.Climate change gives rise to coastal risks.
C.Many sinking river deltas threaten their residents.
D.Recognizing a problem is the most important.
【答案】28.D 29.C 30.A 31.C
根据第二段“It’s a real call to action.(这是一次真正的行动呼吁)”和“This study shows how common the problem is and really highlights the need to respond.(这项研究表明了这个问题的普遍性,并真正强调了应对的必要性。)”
根据第二段“Before this, nobody had a global view of delta sinking. This study shows how common the problem is and really highlights the need to respond.(在此之前,没有人对三角洲的下沉有全局性的看法。这项研究表明了这个问题的普遍性,并真正强调了应对的必要性。)”以及第三段“Researchers analysed satellite data across 40 major river deltas from 2014 to 2024(研究人员分析了2014年至2024年40个主要河流三角洲的卫星数据)”可知,地面沉降不再是局部问题,已经成为全球性现象。
30.细节理解题。根据第四段“Of these, groundwater extraction stood out as the strongest overall predictor(其中,地下水开采是导致地面沉降最主要的诱因)”可知,人类抽取地下水是地面快速沉降的主要原因。
D
Active fathering is rare in mammals (哺乳动物), with only 5% of the 6,000 species having involved dads. Because of this, scientists know little about how fatherly care works in mammals. Recently, a new research suggests that modifying a single gene can make adoring dads attack their children, at least in African striped mice, among which males show a wide range of behaviors toward the pups (幼崽).
In a study published Feb. 18 in the journal Nature, researchers placed male African striped mice in cages either alone with a group of pups or in group housing with other dads and their pups. They found males kept in groups were more likely to ignore the pups or to try to kill them. To determine the cause, the team exposed male mice to pups, and then monitored their brain activity. They found the attentive dads had greater activity in one brain region, called the medial preoptic area (MPOA). The team then measured gene activity in cells from the MPOA.From this, they discovered that a gene called Agouti was more active in males that attacked pups than in males that cared for the pups.
To confirm that Agouti expression was responsible for the transition, the team first exposed mice to pups, followed by inputting a virus that amped up the expression of the Agouti gene in the MPOA.When the males were exposed again to pups, their behavior changed.
“We found that those males, when Agouti was increased, became threatening toward pups,” Rogers, a researcher at the Princeton Neuroscience Institute, noted, suggesting that this gene was acting as a sort of “switch” that shifted between mean and caring behavior in mouse fathers. While the Agouti gene found within the MPOA may have a strong link to the change in fatherly care, Rogers cautioned that this switch wasn’t the whole story. When the researchers moved males from group housing to single cages, Agouti levels dropped and caregiving increased, suggesting that the gene is influenced more by social context than by food availability.
32.What do male African striped mice tend to do when caged in group housing?
A.Their brain activity declines. B.They seek chances to stay alone.
C.They show mean behaviors to pups. D.Their fatherly behaviors multiply.
33.What is Agouti responsible for?
A.Killing viruses. B.Activating MPOA.
C.Controlling gene expression. D.Regulating fatherly manners.
34.What does the underlined “amped up” in paragraph 3 mean?
A.Disturbed. B.Enhanced. C.Silenced. D.Caused.
35.What can be inferred from Roger’s words in the last paragraph?
A.Agouti levels are unstable in mice. B.Males should give more care to kids.
C.Mice should be raised in single cages. D.Social context accounts for fatherly care.
根据第二段中“In a study published Feb. 18 in the journal Nature, researchers placed male African striped mice in cages either alone with a group of pups or in group housing with other dads and their pups. They found males kept in groups were more likely to ignore the pups or to try to kill them.( 在2月18 日发表于《自然》杂志的一项研究中,研究人员将雄性非洲条纹鼠分别置于单独笼子中与一群幼崽共处,或者与其他父亲及其幼崽一起生活在笼子里。他们发现,生活在群体中的雄性更有可能忽视幼崽或试图杀死它们。)”可知,当雄性非洲条纹鼠被置于群居环境时,它们通常会对幼崽表现出凶狠的行为。
33.细节理解题。根据最后一段中““We found that those males, when Agouti was increased, became threatening toward pups,” Rogers, a researcher at the Princeton Neuroscience Institute, noted, suggesting that this gene was acting as a sort of “switch” that shifted between mean and caring behavior in mouse fathers.( 普林斯顿神经科学研究所的研究员罗杰斯指出:“我们发现,当Agouti基因增加时,这些雄性老鼠对幼崽变得有威胁。”他认为,这种基因在老鼠父亲的刻薄行为和关爱行为之间起着某种“开关”的作用。)”可知,Agouti负责规范父亲的行为。
34.词句猜测题。根据第二段中“From this, they discovered that a gene called Agouti was more active in males that attacked pups than in males that cared for the pups.( 由此,他们发现一种名为Agouti的基因在攻击幼崽的雄性中比在照顾幼崽的雄性中更活跃。)”提到攻击性强的雄性 Agouti 基因活性更高;以及第四段中“We found that those males, when Agouti was increased, became threatening toward pups.( 我们发现,当Agouti基因增加时,这些雄性老鼠对幼崽变得有威胁。)”
根据最后一段中“When the researchers moved males from group housing to single cages, Agouti levels dropped and caregiving increased, suggesting that the gene is influenced more by social context than by food availability.( 当研究人员将雄性从群体居住转移到单个笼子时,Agouti水平下降,照顾增加,这表明该基因更多地受社会环境而不是食物供应的影响。)”
At a glance, a career in science can bring great rewards, yet it seems a challenging and demanding path. 36 It is wise to explore diverse scientific disciplines early on. You should also consider corresponding career possibilities. Choices range widely, from biology, chemistry, and physics to computer science. 37 Take enough time to conduct thorough research. Identify a field that excites your greatest curiosity and passion. Avoid picking a direction blindly.
Solid mathematical knowledge is another essential foundation. Competent critical thinking is equally important for scientific work. 38 Actively seek guidance from teachers or classmates. Commit to consistent practice. Otherwise, you may struggle later. Complicated scientific theories could become hard to grasp. Interpreting experimental data might also prove difficult.
39 Pressures are a constant friend. Researchers often bear heavy pressure to generate valuable findings. They must publish qualified papers. They also compete for limited research funding. Many projects stretch over years before yielding meaningful outcomes. During this time, difficulties and failures are common. Therefore, learning effective ways to manage stress is crucial.
Above all, genuine enthusiasm for your subject matters far more than casual interest. 40 Patience is just as vital as intelligence. Celebrate small victories along the way, and learn from every failure. Surround yourself with supportive co-workers and advisors who share your passion. Remember that a scientific career is not a short race but a marathon. The journey itself, with all its ups and downs, shapes you into a better thinker and problem-solver.
A.There is a deep sense of satisfaction to be found.
B.Each field opens doors to unique professional routes.
C.You must accept that progress rarely comes overnight.
D.If you find yourself weak in these abilities, do not lose heart.
E.Working in science also means facing unavoidable challenges.
F.Those pursuing scientific work must consider several key points.

My parents do a lot of embarrassing things! Usually, it’s my dad who sings silly songs or tells corny jokes around my friends. But a few weeks ago, it was my mother who played the embarrassing-parent role.
While my mom and I were shopping, we ran into my teacher, who mentioned that the school didn’t have a music teacher to help our class put together a performance for the Winter Fair. And, right then and there, my mom said, “I know the perfect song and dance. I’ll teach it to the kids!”
Before I could say “Please don’t”, my mom had agreed to come to my class every morning at 9:30 for a week. Oh, and just to be clear, it's not as if she’s a professional entertainer. My parents run a small grocery store, and the only singing my mom does is in the shower.
“Um,” I said on our way home, “are you sure this is such a good idea?” “Of course!” she said. “If we want your school Winter Fair to happen, people need to step up and volunteer.” “I know volunteering is important,” I said, “but couldn’t you help out in Tex and Indi’s kindergarten instead?” She laughed, “Don’t be silly. We will have fun!”
“OK, guys!” my teacher said at 9:28 on Monday. “We’re going to stop silent reading a little early today because a special guest is here to help us with a performance for the Winter Fair. Let’s all welcome Arizona’s mother.”
I looked up to discover my mom standing at the front of the room wearing the world’s silliest snowflake hat. “I’m super excited to be here with you!” my mom said. “I’m going to teach you a fun song-and-dance performance I learned a few years ago, when I did some theater in college.”
“Oh please, oh please,” I said over and over in my head, “let there be a fire drill, or an assembly, or a power failure, or anything to stop my mom from completely embarrassing herself and me!” But apparently, my mom was not at all concerned about looking silly. She turned on some background music and started singing and dancing away.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
“I can’t believe this is happening” was all I could think.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
To my great surprise, my mom was actually a wonderful performer.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 1: “I can’t believe this is happening” was all I could think. I closed my eyes, covered my ears and shrank as low as I possibly could in my chair. After a few seconds, though, I mustered up enough courage to uncover one ear and peek through a half-open eye. That’s when I saw the expression of pure joy on my mom’s face. She was having so much fun that I couldn’t help smiling. My classmates clapped and cheered, and I heard someone say, “Wow! Arizona’s mother is pretty talented!”
Paragraph 2: To my great surprise, my mom was actually a wonderful performer. She was also good at teaching us the song and the dance steps, too. We learned quickly. By the time of the fair, I was actually proud of her for putting herself out there for the sake of us kids. Our performance at the Winter Fair was a huge success. As we drove home, I said to my mom, “I’m really glad you volunteered to help my class with the performance.” My mom reached back and squeezed my hand. “Thanks for saying that. I can see why you might have been embarrassed, but I had such a great time.”

D.Her grandma bought them to lift her spirits.
27.What can be a suitable title for the text?

Behind this booming trend 58 (lie) what many scholars regard as a notable social transformation, reshaping people’s ways of travelling. Many cultural sites, once 59 (ignore) and left unnoticed, now serve as mental shelters for young people constantly struggling with anxiety. There exists a widespread belief that literary works can embed soul into ordinary landscapes.
The Temple of Earth in Beijing, 60 (close) linked to Shi Tiesheng’s writings, has become a popular visiting spot. Visitors recreate scenes described in some of his 61 (essay), quietly experiencing the peaceful mindset he gained through countless hardships. Thanks to literary power, ordinary landscapes are viewed in 62 completely different light nowadays.
This cross-border cultural fascination stretches beyond China. Cambridge, associated with Xu Zhimo’s poetry, attracts waves of Chinese tourists.
