Most people agree that honesty is a good thing. But does Mother Nature agree? Animals can't talk, but can they lie in other ways? Can they lie with their bodies and behavior? Animal experts may not call it lying, but they do agree that many animals, from birds to chimpanzees, behave dishonestly to fool other animals. Why? Dishonesty often helps them survive.
Many kinds of birds are very successful at fooling other animals. For example, a bird called the plover sometimes pretends to be hurt in order to protect its young. When a predator(猎食动物)gets close to its nest, the plover leads the predator away from the nest. How? It pretends to have a broken wing. The predator follows the "hurt" adult, leaving the baby birds safe in the nest.
Another kind of bird, the scrub jay, buries its food so it always has something to eat. Scrub jays are also thieves. They watch where others bury their food and steal it. But clever scrub jays seem to know when a thief is watching them. So they go back later, unbury the food, and bury it again somewhere else. Birds called cuckoos have found a way to have babies without doing much work. How? They don't make nests. Instead, they get into other birds' nests secretly. Then they lay their eggs and fly away. When the baby birds come out, their adoptive parents feed them.
Chimpanzees, or chimps, can also be sneaky. After a fight, the losing chimp will give its hand to the other. When the winning chimp puts out its hand, too, the chimps are friendly again. But an animal expert once saw a losing chimp take the winner's hand and start fighting again.
Chimps are dishonest in other ways, too. When chimps find food that they love, such as bananas, it is natural for them to cry out. Then other chimps come running. But some clever chimps learn to cry very softly when they find food. That way, other chimps don't hear them, and they don't need to share their food.
As children, many of us learn the saying "You can't fool Mother Nature." But maybe you can't trust her, either.

How many sandwiches does it take to make a pyramid (金字塔)? Three. How many sandwiches does it take to bring your mom on a trip to see the pyramids? Considerably more. Still, that didn’t stop one son from making it happen.
Gloria Walker always dreamed of traveling to Giza to see the pyramids, but more than that, she wanted to take her family along. Sadly, Walker was diagnosed with terminal cancer (癌症晚期) last year. Between the cost of travel and the limitations of her illness, that trip of a lifetime didn’t appear likely in the 56-year-old’s future.
But her son Dustin was determined to make his mom’s dream come true. He just needed to figure out a way to make it happen. So what better way than making and selling his favorite sandwich using his mom’ recipe, of course - to raise the money?
With sale days starting at 4
a. m. to bake homemade rolls, the entire family had been pitching in: Dustin and his wife Halley shared griddle (煎锅) duty; his father helped out with preparation. Dustin’s brother, sister, and children, along with some friends, had all been working to meet the goal.
Dustin began to record the team efforts for Instagram, soon gathering a growing circle of sandwich-loving supporters. After that, demand (需求) increased greatly. Without an advanced kitchen, Dustin found it hard to keep up with it. That was when a local food truck owner stepped in with an offer to let Dustin and his family work out of his mobile cooking facility. Over the course of six weeks, the group raised $18,000 - enough for Dustin to take the family to Egypt with money to spare. They would be setting out at the beginning of May.
This experience changed his mom’s life. However, Dustin has no plans to change his profession as a result. “So many people say, ‘Are you going to jump into this and open up a shop?’” Dustin said. “I could never. My heart and love is teaching and for the students.”
1. What was Gloria Walker’s dream? (no more than 8 words)
2. What does the underlined part in the fourth paragraph probably mean? ( no more than3 words)
3. What difficulty did Dustin meet with when realizing his mother dream? ( no more than 10 words)
4. What is Dustin’s profession? (no more than 3 words)
5. What do you think of Dustin? Please say it in your own words. (no more than 20 words)

(25-26高二上·天津咸水沽第一中学和百中·期中)Sharing a room with a family member or a friend can be tough, but it becomes especially difficult when you're sharing it with someone you hardly know. Here are things you can do to help you deal with having a roommate, no matter who it may be.
First of all, you have to remember that you get what you give. If you are nice to others, then others will be nice to you as well. You also need to set boundaries for yourself and for the other person. So before your new roommate moves in, talk to him. Set the rules early on and discuss your expectations.
Remember that there are two things that make up any good relationship: trust and respect. The same thing applies to having a roommate. You have to respect each other. Suppose he has that new PS3 game that you've always wanted to try out, what should you do? Ask permission first. If he says no, don’t take it against him. If he lets you borrow his stuff, take care of the item and treat it as if it were your own. Make sure that you return it in the same condition as when you borrowed it.
For housework that can be shared, you may want to divide it equally so that you don’t do all the housework. Take turns in washing the dishes. You may do it every other day or you may split the task so that you only have to do it in the morning and your roommate only has to do it at night.
When it comes to food and grocery items, determine what can be shared. Don't be too mean when it comes to sharing food. The advantage of sharing food is that both of you can save on time and food preparation.
1. What is the main idea of this passage?(no more than 15 words)
2. What is important for good relationship among roommates? (no more than 5words)
3. What does the underlined word “split” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?(no more than 3 words)
4. What does the author suggest in Paragraph 5?(no more than 5 words)
5. If you live with a roommate, what will you do to get along with him/her ?(no more than 20 words)

Ahn was carefully cleaning windows of her family’s new Vietnamese restaurant. She turned her vision to look outside the restaurant as a girl about her age walked up the street. Ahn’s family had recently moved to this neighborhood, so she had few friends.
The girl paused to study the sign announcing their future opening and then looked directly at Ahn. Ahn smiled shyly and lifted a hand, accidentally waving with the cleaning cloth. The girl laughed at her amusement and waved back in acknowledgment. Ahn hesitated for a while but opened the door. “Hello,” she said with a big smile, adding the first thing that entered her head, “Do you like Vietnamese food?”
“I don’t know, but I like to try new things,” the girl said, and then she introduced herself as Gabriela. Ahn could not think of additional conversation until she had a sudden idea. “Please wait here,” she requested. Then she ran into the kitchen and took some Vietnamese candy to Gabriela. She said, “If you enjoy it, I hope you’ll return to the restaurant sometime.” “Excellent, I’ll see you around soon. You can take my word for it.” Gabriela said and headed down the street.
The following day, after decorating the restaurant with some beautiful flowers, Ahn saw Gabriela come to her with a plate. Ahn warmly opened the door. Gabriela presented the plate and said, “Your candy is delicious. I’ve never tasted such unique candy. I like it. And my parents and grandmother are also fond of it. I’m really grateful. I bring you biscuits made from my grandmother’s recipe.”
Gabriela entered and praised the room with its beautiful decoration. She even assisted Ahn in designing a pamphlet (小册子) for the restaurant. The two girls from very different backgrounds became best friends. Ahn was positive that the restaurant would make a strong impression on the community, that customers would be plentiful, and that she was going to enjoy life, especially the new friendship here.

(25-26高二上·天津河西·期中)When I was in school, the class I dreaded most was my eighth grade art class. The teacher put down my every attempt at completing an assignment. I simply couldn’t produce art the way she wanted it. Luckily, I’d already proven myself in other creative areas. Yet, that art teacher was successful in convincing me that I had no talent for painting, drawing, or anything related to them. Imagine my surprise when I published my nature photography and became a volunteer art teacher!
Unfortunately, my story is all too familiar to many people who come through my workshops and practice. Even more unfortunately, the vast majority of people were so discouraged in childhood that they cut off the creative impulse (冲动) in most areas of their lives. Their teachers, parents, or classmates convinced them they had no talent, so they gave up. The pain of failure was simply too great.
Why have we forgotten creativity is an experience, not a result? Let’s consider why we express creativity in first place. To be creative is to be human. Everything we’ve at our disposal (处理) is the result of someone’s creative expression and willingness to take a risk. Even so, for creativity to flower and feel free of encumbrance (累赘), it needs to be about the joyful moments spent creating, not just about what we’ve to show for those moments. Whatever pattern you need to break, try to make it about the pleasure and not about the outcome.
Therefore, I’d urge you to curb your perfectionism not enthusiasm! Perfectionism is the leading killer of artistic expression. Relax a little and bring back your childlike nature when you create. Children instinctively (本能地) know how to give over to the joy --- until someone teaches them otherwise! Let your creation be whatever it wants to be. See if it can lead you rather than the other way around. Let your unconsciousness come through, and let the expression of yourself be beautiful regardless of how it compares to anything else. After all, it’s yours, and no one but you could create it!
1. What made the author give up his dream of art? (no more than 15 words)
2. What does the third paragraph mainly tell us? (no more than 10 words)
3. Please explain the underlined word “curb” in English. (no more than 5 words)
4. According to the passage, what is necessary for a creative person? (no more than 10 words)
5. Do you think you are more creative as a student? Please give an example. (no more than 25 words)

During the years working in Peacekeeping Force, I was sent abroad. As a senior analyst, my workdays were routinely twelve to sixteen hours long. Like all the old soldiers, we looked forward to receiving mails from home.
We soldiers received many “To any service member” mails, which were sent by the general public in our mother country to soldiers far away from home, as an expression of support. I never took any of those letters, since I wrote to my wife on a daily basis, as well as occasionally writing notes to my daughter Jenny’ s classroom, and I didn’t feel I had time to write to anyone else.
After five or six months of hearing from the mail — announcing the availability of “To any service member” mail, I decided to take a few of the letters. Because I planned, as time permitted, to drop them a line telling them “Thanks” for their support.
I picked up three letters, and placed them in my cargo pocket and went back to work. Over the next week or so, I started responding to the letters. When it came time to answer the third letter, I noticed it had no return address, but a postmark from my hometown, which made me think of home. I had missed spending important festivals with my family. Homesickness seized me.
I opened the card and started to read the letter attached, which was a short one. About the third or fourth sentence down, it read, “My daddy is a soldier over there, if you see him tell him hi and I love and miss him.” This statement really touched me and made me miss my family even more. Looking down to the name of the sender, I sat in silence as tears filled my eyes.
1. Who will usually write “To any service member” mails to the author? (No more than 8 words)
2. Why did the author decide to answer some “To any service member” mails later? (No more than 10 words)

4. How do you understand the underlined sentence in Paragraph 4? (No more than 6 words)

Teamwork is an important part of the health and fitness program at Spirit Club, where most of the participants have disabilities.
Jared Ciner created the program two years ago, “Our main focus is the same thing as any other gym’s, which is to help people be active and healthy, but the difference is that we do change a little bit to make sure that it is the right pace for the people we are working with, so that everybody can follow along.”
Ciner used to work as a director for a local organization aimed at helping people with disabilities and as a part-time personal trainer at gyms. “I noticed that many of the people with disabilities I worked with struggled with weight problems, and were looking for more physical methods and more social ways,” he said.
His volunteer experience in Ethiopia working with children from very poor families helped him understand the influence of organized physical activity, too. “That helped me realize how much organized physical activity can help people connect to each other and increase people’s self-esteem (自尊)” Ciner said.
Classes at Spirit Club are interactive, and students can come with parents. They participate in partnered workouts and learn balance, strength, speed and agility (灵活性). They are also encouraged to eat right.
Alan Bradshaw, who is mentally disabled, has been coming to classes for two years. “He recently lost 21 pounds,” said his mother. “He is more outgoing. When he first started, he couldn’t sit on the floor or get down on the floor. He is doing that now. Great changes have happened to him and it is an important step forward for him. He likes the gym because he can make friends easily and exercise at the same time,” she said.

From time to time, life might provide a person with the present of a moment that changes everything. As for me, that came on a plane home in January, 2009. Frankly, as a lawyer, I specialized in corporate law in oil and gas projects. In fact, I’d grown to hate my job. It involved too much paperwork and loads of traveling, which I thought was fairly exhausting.
Actually, becoming a lawyer was unintended. I loved my school but it was competitive and students were destined for a good university, and then a graduate plan. That was the track I was on. After graduation, I became a lawyer, but that just made me trapped. I wanted to make a difference, but I had no idea what else I could do.
On that life-changing flight, I asked a stewardess to bring me a hot drink. When she returned, I couldn’t help crying. Hugging me, she said, “I don’t know what’s wrong but if you’re crying in business class, you need to change your life.”
Those words had a great effect on me. I couldn’t carry on in a job that made me so uncomfortable.
After much reflection, I resigned 18 months later. The last time I’d been happy was when I was volunteering at a school. Because of that, my friend Sophia kept telling me I’d love teaching. Then I contacted four schools and became a teacher in the end. No amount of planning would have prepared me for my first day as a teacher. It was stressful, but as I became familiar with the curriculum, I relaxed.
Five years on, I’m head of department. Watching my students develop is so rewarding and results day makes me burst with pride. I used to feel scared about the thought of becoming a more senior lawyer, but I’m so positive about the opportunities teaching can offer. I earn less now but I become richer in many ways.
Every single day, I feel excited to go to work.
1. Why did the author dislike her job? (no more than 15 words)
2. What does the underlined part in Paragraph 2 mean? (no more than 3 words)

4. How does the author’s life change after being a teacher? (no more than 10 words)
5. What kind of career will you choose after graduation? Please explain. (no more than 25 words)

Daniella Hudson grew up in a very creative family. “Mum and Dad made all our furniture,” she said. “Not because we couldn't afford it: they just liked making things.
When Daniella visited a design exhibition with her class at the age of ten, she realised she wanted to follow her parents’ example. Since that day, she’s been making furniture. “I’ve learnt by helping Mum and Dad, and through watching videos online.
Her first piece was a table, made soon after visiting the exhibition, and similar to one she’d seen there. “They had furniture from the last hundred years, and I copied a 1920s design.” said Daniella. “Unluckily, no one has wanted tables like that. But I was very chuffed because of the good quality of my table.”
Daniella started selling her furniture at a local market. “This gave me the chance to find out what people thought about my designs. But finally, I had to give up because the market closed down,” said Daniella. “After that, I started an internet business and it was doing so well.”
Recently, Daniella was asked to take part in a local design show. “One of the organisers had bought one of my pieces off the internet. I couldn't believe it when she told me there'd be a thousand visitors.” she said. “I had little idea what visitors would think about it. My furniture is quite different—mine is more traditional,” Daniella said. But Daniella received lots of orders at the show and the future is looking bright for this young design star.

(25-26高二上·天津耀华中学·期中)Too Far Away from It All?
A TV series in England, Away from It All, has surprised everyone by becoming a huge success with young people.
Its success is surprising because its main character is a shepherd (牧羊人), and the series is about the relaxing lifestyles of people who live in the country. There is none of the action that we usually see on TV. There are also no stressful moments, busy offices, or crowded cities. Away from It All is set in the peaceful English countryside and tells simple stories of people’s kindness.
The director of the series says its success is a sign of teenagers suffering from stress. He says that watching Away from It All helps teenagers forget about the pressures of exams and homework, and the troubles that fill the world. He also claims that it’s a good sign that today’s youth are switching to happier TV series, as it shows they would like a happier and healthier life.
Although the series’ success might have a good side, many teachers and parents are worried. They say that some of their students and children are becoming couch potatoes and are using Away from It All as an excuse for not completing homework. Some students have even refused to study for exams because they say that they can only achieve happiness by avoiding stressful situations completely.
One mother, Lucy Linney, said of her son Patrick, “Before he started watching Away from t All, he loved challenges and volunteered every afternoon. But now he has become a couch potato. His grades have dropped and he no longer volunteers. He says it doesn’t matter as he just wants to ‘get away from it all’.”
And what do the experts say? Paula Ray, a doctor, says that TV can influence young people’s lifestyles. But she says that if a young person reacts as strongly as Patrick, it’s likely that there are other reasons for his change in the behaviour.
1. What is the TV series Away from It All about?(no more than 8 words)
2. According to the director, why is Away from It All a success?(no more than 15 words)
3. What do the underlined words in Paragraph 4 mean?(no more than 7 words)
4. According to the 4th paragraph, what do many teachers and parents worry about because of Away from It All?(no more than 10 words)
5. Do you agree with Dr. Paula Ray’s saying, “TV can influence young people’s lifestyles”? Please give your reason(s).(no more than 20 words)

When I first arrived at an Australian high school at the age of 16, I was completely over the moon with everything! I was finally in Australia, something I had been planning for many months.
However, as with the majority of exchange students, I met with the common culture shock and I am glad I got through it in the end! Here is what has helped me deal better with culture shock.
Firstly, try to really put yourself out there and make friends! Talk, even when you make mistakes! Develop a routine! Think about how you dealt with stress at home and apply it in the new culture: Yoga, sports, going for a walk, or talking to a dear friend?
Secondly, try to be positive and see the good aspect in everything. Also, laugh about yourself or whatever is discouraging you — humour helps you make light of a situation. Always remember to ask yourself: What can I learn from this?
Thirdly, don’t try to ignore the positive aspects of the other culture. Realizing that doesn’t mean you have to give up all you have learnt or believed in! It simply widens your horizons(眼界) and helps you communicate between different cultures.
I am still in touch with my host family that I stayed with ten years ago! They have been a great role model to me and helped me a lot. I’m very grateful for their friendship and generosity while I went through culture shock.
1. How did the writer feel when arriving at Australian high school at first? (no more than 5 words)
2. What does the underlined word “that” refer to? (no more than 10 words)

As my plane landed in Pamplona, Spain, I couldn’t help thinking, “As a girl, I’m crazy about going abroad and taking classes in Spanish.” My biggest fear was whether I would be able to communicate with Spanish speakers, and how I would be able to adapt to its culture—so different from America’s, and I’m a girl.
After a month of taking classes in Spanish and talking with locals, my language skills improved. When I first started, it was easy to get frustrated when I didn’t understand parts of what my professor was saying, or to feel embarrassed when I had to ask someone to repeat themselves many times. However, people often politely corrected me when I made a mistake, and also offered support and words of encouragement. My growing ability to speak the language made the frustration fade away. And it also helped me advise those with the same fear: speak as much as possible to make it disappear.
Another challenge was culture shock. Coming from Seattle, where stores are always open, I had to adjust to stores closing in the afternoons and on Sundays. Plans are made much more slowly, and usually at the last minute, which for someone who values organization and certainty as much as I do, was difficult to get used to. The best way to deal with the culture shock was to change my views. I now appreciate Spanish people’s view: life is more than work, and free time lets people enjoy life outside work with family and friends.
Living abroad is always frightening, especially when the language and culture are completely foreign. There will always be challenges, frustrations, and problems. However, learning to deal with them and appreciate the journey has been one of the most valuable things I’ve learned while abroad.

My family had moved into a new house with big back yard. For some time, my older brother and I had been expecting a family pet. Finally, we managed to persuade our parents that the time had come for keeping one.
Though my brother and I were of like minds about the goal of having a family member, what exactly it meant to each of us was entirely different. I was excited and happy when my parents brought home the dog, Snoopy. Despite the fun of playing with him,I knew it was really more my brother’s pet than mine. I really, really wanted a cat! I tried to show my joy for getting a pet while trying to hide my disappointment that he wasn’t a cat. My parents must have known how I was feeling because they suggested that I could make a wish about it.
Running to my bedroom, I made a wish sincerely that I would have a cat. Not more than a minute or two passed when I heard a faint scratching sound(轻微的抓挠声) coming from the front door. Curious, I stood up, approaching the open front door. There, sitting calmly before me was a large, white cat.
I was absolutely amazed! I went close to the white cat, and it began walking towards me. I gathered his mass into my arms and then I went into the back yard where my parents and brother were playing with Snoopy. So, Snowball joined our household that day, too.
Although my parents always denied having anything to do with Snowball's arrival, I guessed they might have. However, even if they did somehow arrange for him to appear at the front door at the very moment when I was making a wish for a cat, it would not reduce the miracle of a cat doing in my life.

A poor little boy was at a loss (不知所措的) when a lovely young woman opened the door. Instead of a meal, he asked for a drink of water. She thought he looked hungry, so she brought him a large glass of milk.He drank it slowly, and then asked, “How much should I pay you?”
“You needn’t pay anything,” she replied. “My mother has taught me never to accept paying for kindness.” He said, “Then I thank you from the bottom of my heart.” As Howard Kelly left that house, because of the young woman’s kindness and help, his faith (信心) in humanity (人性) had increased .

(一)
(25-26高二上·天津第一中学-11月·期中)阅读下面的短文,并根据短文内容回答后面的问题。

4. What is Dustin’s profession? (no more than 3 words)
5. What do you think of Dustin? Please say it in your own words. (no more than 20 words)
【答案】1. To see the pyramids with her family. 2. Joining in. 3. He was unable to meet/ satisfy the increased demand for sandwiches.
Or: His kitchen couldn’t satisfy/ meet the increased demand for sandwiches.

【答案】1. His teacher discouraged him and said he had no talent for art.

Or: We should enjoy being creative. 3. Limit. / Control. / Hold. / Keep...within limits. / Keep...under control. 4. The childlike nature of creativity. 5. Open.
Yes, perhaps I am. I used to draw a lot of imaginative pictures in childhood.

(25-26高二上·天津部分重点校联考·期中)阅读下面短文,并根据短文内容完成下列各题。
3. What set the author missing his own family? (No more than 5 words)
4. How do you understand the underlined sentence in Paragraph 4? (No more than 6 words)
5. Do you think we should maintain peace in the world and why? Please explain in your own words. (No more than 20 words)
【答案】1. The general public in his mother country. 2. To tell them “Thanks” for their support. 3. A postmark from his hometown. 4. He missed his family very much. 5. Yes. Only by maintaining peace can we ensure global stability, foster development and promote cooperation among nations for a better future.

(5)题解析:
开放性题目,答案不唯一,合理即可。根据文章第一段“During the years working in Peacekeeping Force, I was sent abroad. As a senior analyst, my workdays were routinely twelve to sixteen hours long.

5. What kind of career will you choose after graduation? Please explain. (no more than 25 words)
【答案】1. Because she got fed up with too much paperwork and travelling.

【答案】1. Fear of not communicating and adapting to a different culture. 2. It means “disappear” or “vanish”. 3. She changed her views. 4. Frightening but valuable. 5. Yes, I am willing to study abroad because it broadens my horizons and enriches my experiences.
