专题07 阅读表达
(一)
(25-26高一上·天津小站第一中学-11月·期中)I still remember my first day of second grade. I was led to a classroom. No teacher yet. Girls talking and laughing. Boys playing games.
I took some paper and a pencil, picked a desk, and went to work. Minutes later, a girl came over and sat on top of my desk.
“What are you doing?” she said.
“I am doing Fun with Number.” I replied. Then I rose from my seat to get my pencil sharpener. I had no idea that when I stood, the desk would fall over and hurt her leg.
Her name was Lucy. From that day on we got to know each other, and she became my best friend. Now we have been close friends for more than 60 years. We often get together and recall the past.
Some TV advertisements try to tell us what children need for school, new shoes, clothes, and schoolbags. But really, children’s needs are simple. Besides the basics — to be fed, cared for, and loved — they need the gift of friendship.
For years, I feared how people saw me. But one day, I finally understood I didn’t need to be smart or pretty or popular, but just needed to be kind.
My grandson William recently finished his preschool and received a prize for “friendship”. Even an Olympic medal wouldn’t make me prouder. I think children need to know that they are loved. They need to know they have all they need and that the best way to win friends is to be kind.
1. When and where did the author meet Lucy for the first time? (No more than 15 words)
2. What was the author doing when Lucy came over? (No more than 10 words)
3. How do Lucy and the author keep their friendship growing? (No more than 10 words)
4. Besides the basics, what do children need for a happy school life? (No more than 20 words)
5. In your opinion, what is the best way to win friends? (No more than 20 words)
【答案】1. They met in the classroom on the first day of second grade. 2. He/ She was doing Fun with Number. 3. They often get together and recall the past. 4. They need (the gift of ) friendship. 5. In my opinion, to be kind is the best way to win friends.

(25-26高一上·天津和平第一中学·期中)阅读短文,按照题目要求用英语回答问题。
There we were posing with our matching leotards (舞蹈服) in the living room — my four-year-old granddaughter Carolyn and I. As I looked down, I noticed that Carolyn had her toes pointed and arms extended, and she smiled from ear to ear. Never had I guessed that I would be dancing at seventy with my granddaughter beside me and that I would be called “Dancing Grammy”.
In the past, I usually saw my grandchildren on holidays. When I did visit them, the children loved to have me dance and show them a few steps. They would wear homemade costumes and do a show for their mommies and daddies. We would perform many times during my visit.
It wasn’t until I moved to Indiana and lived close to Carolyn that I acquired my full-time student. She wanted to learn new steps all the time and understood them quickly. She tried to teach me, too. I always wanted to do the splits (劈叉), and Carolyn, who could literally jump into them both ways, worked very hard to help me do that.
For our first performance, Carolyn and I decided to do something simple. We wore matching costumes — black velvet (天鹅绒) leotards with little skirts, lots of bling, feathered hats, and shimmering dancing hose. We took center stage in the middle of a beach house at a family reunion later in the year, and we were quite a hit. From then on, we were invited to give lots of performances, sometimes at nursing homes, and other times at festival celebrations and other places.
Now Carolyn is teaching and performing dances while awaiting a call from a school on the East Coast that prepares dancers for companies. All this recognition couldn’t have happened to a more deserving young lady. Not only does Carolyn have talent, but also she has the spirit of never giving up. You may not believe she is a dancer, with an artificial arm!
1. How did Carolyn probably feel when dancing with the author? (no more than 5 words)
2. What did the author do when visiting her grandchildren? (no more than 10 words)
3. When did Carolyn start to learn to dance from the author full-time? (no more than 10 words)
4. What does the underlined part in paragraph 4 probably mean? (no more than 8 words)
5. What do you think of Carolyn? Why? (no more than 20 words)
【答案】1. Very happy/Excited. 2. Danced and showed them a few steps. 3. After the author moved to Indiana. 4. We were very successful. 5. She is talented and never gives up because she has an artificial arm but still dances well.

(25-26高一上·天津和平双菱中学·期中)阅读表达
I used to be a selfish girl and I only thought of myself. I did not care about helping others, but only about my look, clothes, money and grades.
One day, I was suddenly influenced by my neighbor, who is now in college, and ended up wanting to volunteer for others. He had so much fun with volunteering and told me that he felt extremely good after helping others. I hoped to get the same results, for I felt worthless everywhere then. I viewed almost everything in a negative way, and I figured I had to experience something that would make me appreciate things that I had.
I volunteered at the nursing home for a year where my neighbor volunteered. I brought snacks, coffee and games for the elderly patients, talked to them while sharing snacks, and played games like chess and checkers them. Because they were Koreans, they often had trouble communicating with the helpers who were hired to help them. I sometimes translated things for them and offered to be their translator whenever they needed help.
By volunteering at the nursing home, I changed a lot. I realized how lucky I am to speak both Korean and English and that I should help other people learn Korean as well. I had learned many life lessons through volunteering. By helping others, I felt needed in society. Not only did it enhance my confidence, but it also allowed others to benefit from it.
Volunteering is a great opportunity to improve oneself, others, and the whole society. So if you ever have the chance, volunteer! It’s something you won't regret!
1. What kind of person was the author before volunteering?(no more than 5 words)
2. Why did the author want to volunteer one day?(no more than 10 words)
3. What did the author do when the elderly patients had difficulty in communicating with the workers?(no more than 10 words)
4. What does the underlined word mean in paragraph 4?(one word)
5. What do you think of volunteering after reading the text? Please explain.(no more than 25 words)
【答案】1. She was selfish and negative. 2. Because she wanted to experience some positive changes. 3. She offered to be their translator whenever they needed help. 4. Improve/Increase/Enhance/Raise. 5. I think volunteering not only helps those who need help, but also benefits the givers and the society.

(25-26高一上·天津和平耀华中学·期中)阅读短文,并按照题目要求用英语回答问题.
I started drawing houses at six. Unlike most girls, my dream was to build a backyard clubhouse-an unrealistic dream because we lived in an apartment. By high school I continued drawing and my dreams broadened—to become an architect. My elder brother told me that took a university education. But my family couldn't afford that kind of education. Still, I fanned the name of hope.
I got a part-time job at Bayside Bowl and started saving money. My bank account however, was growing quite slowly. When I looked at college catalogues, I couldn't imagine how I would ever get there. I decided to shrink(缩小)my dreams to a more realistic size.
Soon after that, a newcomer started frequenting Bayside Bowl. She arrived alone and always carried a pink hag with a hall inside. Her dark, wrinkled skin and curly gray hair made her stand out among our younger customers. She talked to me whenever I cleaned near her lane(球道). I learned her name was Bessie. She had been a singer for as long as she could remember. In her 20s she had tried to get a job as a restaurant singer, "I was a young black woman, and in the early 1950s doors didn't exactly open wide for me. Zilch!(无价值之人)" she said.
But I appreciated her advice. "Life's like bowling," she would say. "Set your eyes on your target and follow through. " Indeed, Bessie hadn't let the "zilches" stop her. She had saved up and enrolled in the Brightwood Music Academy. It turned out this lady with the pink bowling bag was the Bessie Richards, a recording artist of the 1960s.
Before leaving, Bessie left me some lines of poetry she had copied from a book. Bessie said, "Read this when the going seems tough. It'll help you follow through and reach for your goal." These are the lines:
Hold fast to dreams
For if dreams die
Life is a broken-winged bird
That cannot fly
Hold fast to dreams
For when dreams go
Life is a barren field
Frozen with snow.
A year has passed since I last bowled with Bessie, and I've restarted my drawing. I'm working and saving money, taking drafting classes, and applying for internships(实习). Whenever I'm discouraged, I reread those lines of poetry, There'll be no barren(盆脊)field of frozen snow nor zilches for me. Inspired by Bessie and the poem, I plan to continue to dream.
1. What was the author's dream when she was in high school?(no more than 5 words)
2. Why did the author shrink her dream to a realistic size?(no more than 10 words)
3. How do you understand the underlined sentence "Life is like bowling"?(no more than 20 words)
4. Describe one of Bessie's characteristics and explain why.(no more than 15 words)
5. Who is the "Bessie" in your life? How does he or she help you to pursue your dream?(no more than 30 words)
【答案】1. To become an architect.
Or: Becoming an architect. 2. Because her family/she couldn’t afford a university education. 3. Just like playing bowling, we need to set our eyes on the target in life and follow through. 4. She is/was inspiring because she encouraged the author to pursue her dream.
Or: She is/was determined /brave /persistent because she strove for/worked towards her goal. 5. Open.(作答时一定要结合自身生活经历,要体现正能量。)

She had saved up and enrolled in the Brightwood Music Academy.”(事实上,贝西并没有让那些“困难”阻止她。她攒钱进了布莱特伍德音乐学院。),可得出贝西为自己的目标而奋斗,很有决心、勇敢、坚持不懈,故答案为:She is/was determined /brave /persistent because she strove for her goal.。

Restricted to a wheelchair as she began to grow up, she even has difficulty eating and bathing. Her future seems bleak in the eyes of others, but Wang and her parents have remained optimistic throughout.
Since childhood, Wang’s parents have been telling her to regard herself as a normal person even if she is physically disabled. She practiced performing daily activities repeatedly. With the assistance of her parents, she learned to live with her physical disability and aimed to be an outstanding writer.
Before the age of 17, Wang completed nine years of compulsory education and acquired much literary knowledge. With the encouragement of her teacher, she became more determined to chase her dream of writing.
Sitting in a wheelchair, Wang pursues her dream in her own way. In be United States the most popular form of folk dancing has been square-dancing since the earlier days. In those days, men and women worked in groups to build a house or harvest crops. When the work was done, they usually danced merrily and happily in a store or in a farm kitchen.

The year I entered my teens, I expressed to my parents my wish to play the piano. Thinking the piano accordion (键盘式手风琴) a reasonable instrument, my parents asked me to attend lessons offered on weekends. After several weeks, my instructor told Mom that I had a knack for music and could be a musician. As a result, for Christmas I received a full- sized Mundinger accordion.
Then, in 1983, I decided to return to full-time studies. Needing money to support my education, I placed an ad and found a buyer for my accordion. Over the years, I felt a feeling of shame sometimes about that Mundinger my father had paid for by working so hard as a miner. I would recall (回想起) how much happiness my practicing and playing had given him.
By 2013, Dad was in a nursing home. In those situations when an accordion player would be brought in to cheer up the people there, I would see his eyes light up. I began to consider the possibility of being able to bring that happiness to him myself whenever I visited, and I asked my son, Sam, to find me a small accordion. Weeks later, I took the bus to Thompson Pawnbrokers where Sam told me to check out their accordions.
When I noted that there were only two full-sized accordions, I asked to check out more in the back of the store, explaining that I wanted something smaller. It was when the clerk placed the instrument on the counter that I realized that the accordion I was looking at was not LIKE the instrument I used to have, it was THE instrument I used to have!
Before Dad passed away the following month, I brought the instrument to the nursing home. Before I told Dad how I had come to own it once again, I asked, “Do you know what that is, Papa?” Although he had dementia (痴呆), he answered, “Of course, Lenny! It’s your accordion.”

(25-26高一上·天津二十一中学·期中)阅读短文,按照题目要求用英语回答问题。
Years ago, I took a class on writing for children. In this class, the students turned in a manuscript every week. One week I wrote a story that I really liked. It was about a small boy who was constant(经常地)in trouble. At this point, I made a mistake beginning writers often make. I fell in love with my first draft. I typed it up, and sent the manuscript out to five publishers.
For some reason, the teacher decided to read this story in class. At first, I thought she'd chosen the story because it was so good. But the teacher stopped after the first paragraph and pointed out the problems. The characters were flat, and the plot wasn't logical(合逻辑的). She couldn't find one good thing to say. I wanted to hide myself. How could I have been stupid enough to think the story was good? After that, I dropped out of the class.
As the weeks went by, one by one, all the manuscripts came back. Only one copy never came back, and I figured it had been lost in the mail. I decided that, based on what my teacher said, the story was a loser. I was not made for writing. A year later, I got a call from the fifth publisher. An editor had read my story and wanted to publish it! I put down the phone and danced around the room. The publisher, Follett, did publish my book, The Grumpus Under the Rug. It has sold more than 40,000 copies.
So who was right? Did the teacher have a point? Well, yes, because the characters were flat. Was the editor who took the story wrong to publish it? Well, no, because, despite its shortcomings, the story did have kid appeal. Stories are like people, and they are imperfect. You have to find a way to believe in yourself, even if others don't. You may think successful writers have some special talent that allows them to avoid all this heartbreak. They don't. They just stick with their own dreams.
1. What does the underlined word probably mean in Paragraph 2? (1 word)
2. What was the author considering doing before getting the editor's call? (no more than 5 words)
3. What did the fifth publisher think of the author's story? (no more than 10 words)
4. Why are some writers successful according to the author? (no more than 10 words)
5. What will you do if you meet with difficulties? Please explain. (no more than 20 words)
【答案】1. Dull/Plain. 2. Planning to give up writing. 3. Although imperfect, it appealed to kids. 4. Because they stick to their dreams. 5. When facing difficulties, I will try to overcome them and never give up, because only by persistence can we succeed.

(25-26高一上·天津滨海新区汉沽第一中学·期中)When Spencer West was just five years old, he had a serious disease that resulted in the amputation(截肢)of both his legs. However, the young Canadian has never let his disability get in his way. He has shown that he could do anything a person with two legs could do, including climbing the world’s highest snowcovered mountain—Mt. Kilimanjaro!
Spencer’s great adventure to get to the top of the 19,341foothigh peak began on June 13th from the small village of Naro Moru in Kenya. The team included his best friends David Johnson and Alex Meers.
For the first few days, Spencer walked 80 percent of the rocky road using his hands. Only when it became impossible would he use the wheel chair. As would be expected, the nights were very terrible—The ground underneath was rocky and the temperatures were lower than they expected.
Hard as it was, Spencer did not surrender the goal even once. However, as the road started becoming steeper(陡峭的) and rockier, his friends became worried about him—Even though
Spencer had spent over a year training for this event with his hands, they worried that he would have some serious injuries if he continued. They decided that in the last two days Spencer West would cut back his independent climb to half day and be carried the other half.
Things got more and more difficult as they got closer to the top. As the air got thinner, they suffered from sickness and the shortage of energy so that they stopped any talk—They needed all their energy to keep going. The only thought in their minds was to get to the top.

(25-26高一上·天津滨海新区田家炳中学·期中)In college, Spring Break (春假) is usually associated with the beach, parties and sleepless nights, bringing about relaxation, free time and friends. Students who wish to spend their break doing something productive and rewarding, however, may choose to participate in the Alternative Break Program. It places college students in communities both at home and abroad.
The Program allows students to take part in various projects dealing with issues such as literacy (识字), homelessness and the environment. It includes helping kids with their lessons, raising money for families in need and collecting data for environmental research.
The hope is that, by getting themselves involved in different environments, students will have the opportunities and broaden their view. In turn, they will incorporate (融合) their experiences and lessons learned into their own communities. In a word, the program aims to encourage students to be active citizens and engage themselves in making a difference in society.
In the spring of 2006, about 3,600 students in the USA participated in the Alternative Break Program.
Samantha Giacobozzi, now director of the Program, has been on five alternative break trips herself, including trips to New Orleans, India and the Dominican Republic. “I was a student who went on alternative break trips and had my life totally transformed by that experience,” she said. “Every year, we meet many students who have attended the Program. You can see changes in their life that are connected with their alternative break experiences.”
The Program began in 1991. Today, it has become increasingly popular with college students in the United States.

Wang Yi, born with cerebral palsy (脑瘫) in Jiangsu Province in 1989, has written eight books with one movable finger.
While she only has one movable finger on her right hand, she has managed to write eight books with a total of more than a million words. “For me, writing is not a tool to make a living, but my necessary life mode. It has become a medium for me to communicate with the world. Only when I am involved in writing can I feel complete,” she stressed.
Wang hopes her story can push more disabled people to strive. “The sense of value and dignity comes from social recognition and equal treatment, as well as from the efforts of the disabled themselves.” She also hopes every reader can experience the strength of life when they are reading her works so that they will be inspired.
Jidi Majia, Vice Chairman of the China Writers Association commented, “Although Wang Yi has a disability, the spirit shown in her works is positive. Besides, Wang’s lyrics (抒情诗) show a unique understanding of the value of life.”

Peking opera, known as China’s national opera, is a combination of music, dance and art and is widely regarded as a full expression of Chinese culture. Today, this art form is facing the danger of extinction as the younger generation is mostly interested in pop culture.
A Peking opera project for primary and secondary schools was launched by China’s Ministry of Education. But it has met with a cold reaction from the public. More than half of the 1,000 respondents (答卷人) from ten big cities expressed doubts about the practical meaning of the project in the survey (调查) conducted by the Social Survey Institute of China.
The project plans to add 15 Peking opera pieces into music courses in 200 schools in ten provinces. The pilot programs will last from March to July next year. At present, teaching materials and video tapes are still in production. China News Service reported. The Ministry of Education hopes that the promotional course can help students better appreciate (欣赏) Chinese culture and cultivate (培养) a love for the mother country.
The surveyed people do recognize Peking opera as a comprehensive (综合性的) art form and a representative (代表) of the traditional culture. They also understand the purpose of the educational project. However, they wonder whether it is necessary for every student to learn to sing Peking opera, when they are already stressed from endless exams. In fact, most music teachers themselves know little about this ancient art form, and thus are not confident in arousing (激起) students’ interest in its slow pace and abstruse (深奥的) lyrics.

In be United States the most popular form of folk dancing has been square-dancing since the earlier days. In those days, men and women worked in groups to build a house or harvest crops. When the work was done, they usually danced merrily and happily in a store or in a farm kitchen.
Nowadays square-dancing is still performed. A square, which has four sides, is formed by four couples. Each couple stands on one side of the square, the man on the left and the woman on the right. That is to say, one square has eight people and they stand facing the center of the square.
Large or small numbers of people can dance together. Sometimes as many as 800 or 1,000 people may be dancing all at the same time.
Costumes are worn by those who do the square-dancing. This makes the dancing more colorful to watch. Men may have colored shirts and western trousers they wear only on special days. Women often wear full skirts of different colors with a pretty blouse. In some country areas, everyone wears their best clothes.

It was just an ordinary workday for Evoni Williams, an 18-year-old employee at Waffle House in La Marque, Texas. The place was busy, as usual, with a continuous flow of customers coming in and out. Then, a 78-year-old customer reached out to her asking for help with his food. The customer, who lived far from family support, had difficulty using his hands, so he was unable to cut his food.
Despite the restaurant being packed with customers and many tasks at hand, Evoni didn’t hesitate - she helped the man. Little did she know that her act of kindness was noticed by another customer, Laura Wolf, who found the scene unbelievable. Laura shared this heartwarming story online, and it quickly spread over the Internet, touching the hearts of many.
What Evoni regarded as just a simple action was, in fact, an important one that positioned her for a brighter future. Her kindness captured the attention of Texas Southern University, which awarded her with a $16,000 scholarship. It was reported that Evoni was working at the restaurant to raise money for college, and the university’s recognition was absent from her plans, making it an unexpected blessing.
In an interview, Evoni said she did nothing extraordinary. The thought has proved that she’s really kind and that helping others is something she does naturally and something she’s used to. Nowadays, with everyone focusing on their own tasks, Evoni’s action to stop and help stood out.
It makes sense that her kindness story resonated(引起共鸣) widely.

But, it was all worth it—Finally, Spencer West climbed Africa’s highest peak!
