Leo was a quiet boy. He loved drawing amazing pictures of dragons and spaceships, but he was too shy to talk to other kids. During breaks at school, he often felt lonely (孤单的).
One sunny afternoon, Leo noticed his shadow (影子) on the wall. It was tall and dark, and it copied (复制) everything he did. When he waved (挥手), it waved back. When he jumped, it jumped too. A smile appeared on Leo’s face. He decided to make friends with his shadow.
He named his new friend “Echo (回声)”. Every day, Leo would secretly dance and make funny faces, and Echo would copy him perfectly. He wasn’t lonely anymore. This silent (无声的) game made Leo feel braver (更勇敢). It was like practising being himself without anyone watching.
One day, he saw some kids playing in the park. Usually, he would hide (躲起来). But this time, he remembered the funny dances he did with Echo. He took a deep breath, walked over, and showed them a silly move. The kids laughed and asked him to join their game. That day, Leo made his first real friends.
39. What’s Leo like?
A. Sad and lazy. B. Quiet and shy.
C. Friendly and honest. D. Funny and outgoing.
40. Why did Leo name his shadow “Echo”?
A. Because it could talk to him. B. Because it was his only friend.
C. Because it copied all his moves. D. Because he heard the name in a story.

In our daily lives, we talk with many people. Being polite is not just a good habit; it’s a key to making communication smoother (顺利的) and more pleasant. English has special ways to show respect, especially when we ask for help or permission (许可).
When we ask someone to do something, how we ask makes a big difference. Instead of a direct command (命令) like “Sweep the floor”, a polite request (请求) is better. Using “Could you please ...?” works well. For example, “Could you please help me with this heavy box?” is a good request. “Could” sounds softer than “can”, which shows more respect. Adding “please” makes it even friendlier.
When we want permission, the words we choose are also important. “Can I...?” is common with friends, but “Could I...?” is more polite, especially with adults (成年人) like teachers. Asking a friend, “Can I borrow your book?” is fine. But asking a teacher, “Could I ask a question?” shows respect for their position (职位).
Politeness is also two-way. When you cannot help someone, just saying “No” can sound rude (粗鲁的). It’s better to give a short reason. For example, you could say, “I’m sorry, but I have to finish my homework first.” This shows you respect their request, even if you can’t agree.
Using these polite phrases is an easy way to build better relationships. Small words can make home and school a happier place for everyone.
42. Which is the politest way to ask for help according to the text?
A. Tell me the way. B. Can you help me?
C. Where is the library? D. Could you please help me?
43. What does “Politeness is also two-way” mean in the text?
A. Both people should be polite. B. There are two ways to be polite.
C. You should say polite words twice. D. You should only be polite to adults.
44. How does the writer mainly explain his points (观点)?
A. By telling stories. B. By using numbers.
C. By giving examples. D. By making comparisons (比较).
45. What is the best title for this text?
A. Can or Could B. Giving Good Reasons
C. How to Make a Request D. The Importance of Being Polite
The dolphin is one of the smartest animals in the ocean. It is a kind of mammal (哺乳动物), not a fish, because it needs to come up to the surface (水面) to breathe air. Dolphins can live in both warm seas and rivers. They usually swim in groups called pods. A pod may have only a few dolphins, or sometimes hundreds of them.
Dolphins use sounds to talk to each other. They make clicks and whistles (口哨) to share information. They also use a special way called echolocation to find food. By sending out sounds and listening for the echoes, dolphins can “see” things in dark or muddy (泥泞的) water.
These animals are fast swimmers. They can jump high out of the water, which often makes people smile. Some dolphins even help fishermen by driving fish into their nets. In some places, they are trained to help save people in the sea.
Sadly, dolphins face dangers from pollution, fishing nets, and boat traffic. We should work together to help them, so that these clever animals can live safely in the ocean for many years.
46. Why is a dolphin a mammal?
A. Because it swims in groups. B. Because it is very smart.
C. Because it needs to breathe air. D. Because it lives in warm water.
47. Which of the following is TRUE about dolphins?
A. They cannot help people. B. They can make people happy.
C. They live only in warm seas. D. They swim the fastest in the ocean.
48. Where could you probably read this passage?
A. In a travel guide. B. In a history book.
C. In a sports newspaper. D. In a science magazine.
