Like many women, I always loved to shop. In my teen years, I was what my friends and I fondly called “a mall rat”, a girl who hung out at the mall every weekend, checking out the current fashions.
Fast-forward twenty-five years. After the death of my mother, I once again found pleasure in walking the mall. No longer bound by care-giving responsibilities, I could spend as much time there as I pleased, have a pleasant lunch in the food court and get a bit of exercise in a temperature-controlled environment. Fueled by a maximum-sized coffee drink, I could shop for hours, returning home with incredible bargains. It didn’t matter to me that my sweater drawer overflowed and caused me to place the extras in a storage container under the bed. Nor did I mind when an excess of accessories(配饰) was required to be housed in a plastic box atop my dresser.
Yet now I was forced to take a closer look at my situation. I searched around my overstuffed closet and pulled out a few of my recent purchases. Suddenly, a thought struck me, “Nothing is forever,” as I looked back on my mother’s long illness and her ultimate passing. It was time to let go.
I pulled each piece of clothing out of my closet and sorted them into several piles. Worn-out clothing would go directly into the trash(垃圾). Anything still in good condition but in the wrong size, style or color for me would be donated to an organization that helped women in need. The remainder would be returned to my closet. This act, which took all of about an hour, was liberating in a way I could have never imagined.
Now, with my newfound spare time, I make frequent trips to the library and catch up on my reading. And if I want to take a walk I walk outside in the fresh air regardless of temperature. My life is varied and full again, all because I let go.

As a seven-year-old, I wrote a letter to the President of Coca-Cola, begging for his assistance. Having just returned from a ski trip to Stratton Mountain, Vermont, I found myself unable to locate a specific product. At a convenience store on the mountain, my mom bought Coke in nice-looking 240 ml glass bottles. I saved my empty container and after searching all day when I got home, I realized that my local grocery store did not have these bottles.
That night at dinner, after telling my parents my discovery, they suggested that I get some information about the bottles. My mom was a recruiter(招聘专员) at the time, her job involving many research skills, and she furnished me with a telephone number for Coca-Cola. I called the following day and got a mailing address for the President, and wrote him a letter.
I suppose not too many seven-year-olds voice their concerns to this man, as I quickly received a response. However, the letter was an apology. “Unfortunately,” it read, “we are unable to provide this product in your region.” It began to explain, in very simple terms, that it was not cost effective for Coca-Cola to distribute the product in my heavily populated area. His only recourse was to offer me coupons(优惠券) for other Coca-Cola products.
Yet that polite refusal became my first lesson in supply chain economics. My interest in the Coca-Cola company grew. By sixth grade, while my classmates were trading baseball cards, I was already tracking Coca-Cola’s business performance online.
Today, as I analyze consumer behavior for a Fortune 500 company, I often reflect on how my career began with that childhood inquiry. Most importantly, I remember how my parents transformed a simple product search into a teachable moment about business realities. Their decision taught me that no question is too small when pursuing understanding—a principle that still guides my market research today.
5. Why did the young author write the letter?
A. To ask for some coupons.
B. To share a new product idea.
C. To request an unavailable product.
D. To complain about product distribution.
6. What can we infer about the author’s mother from Paragraph 2?
A. She had worked for Coca-Cola before.
B. She actively supported her child’s curiosity.
C. She thought her child’s demand was impossible.
D. She found the address of Coca-Cola’s President.
7. What does the underlined word “recourse” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. Apology. B. Reward.
C. Solution. D. Refusal.
8. What does the author intend to show through the text?
A. Focusing on profitable products is key to business.
B. Companies should value every consumer’s needs.
C. Hands-on exploration outweighs formal education.
D. Small inquiries can reveal meaningful insights.

1. 答案 A
根据第一段中的“I was what my friends and I fondly called ‘a mall rat’, a girl who hung out at the mall every weekend, checking out the current fashions”可知,作者回忆起自己的青少年时期,说自己是一个爱逛商场的年轻人。
根据第三段中的“Suddenly, a thought struck me,‘Nothing is forever,’ as I looked back on my mother’s long illness and her ultimate passing”和“It was time to let go”可知,作者回想母亲的死亡时,突然意识到“没有什么是永恒的”,从而重新审视自己的购物行为。
根据第四段中的“This act, which took all of about an hour, was liberating in a way I could have never imagined”可知,作者将整理衣物的过程描述为“让人解放的”,因此这一行为对她来说是一种解脱和自由。
根据最后一段中的“make frequent trips to the library and catch up on my reading”和“walk outside in the fresh air”以及“My life is varied and full again, all because I let go”可知,作者放弃不必要的物质这一行为给她带来了巨大的转变。
根据第二段中的“My mom was a recruiter ... she furnished me with a telephone number for Coca-Cola ... wrote him a letter(我母亲当时是一名招聘专员,她的工作涉及许多调研技能,于是她为我提供了可口可乐公司的电话号码。
本段的主题句“Their decision taught me that no question is too small when pursuing understanding—a principle that still guides my market research today(他们的决定告诉我,在求知的道路上,没有什么问题是微不足道的——这一原则至今仍指导着我的市场研究)”表明,作者将童年时对一瓶可乐的追问升华为职业理念,认为小问题能揭示有意义的见解(如供应链经济学),对应D项。
1. 答案 B
解析 根据上文“Money habits are the small daily decisions we make that influence how we spend and save our money.”以及下文“With a little awareness and effort, however, we can make improvements that will help us achieve our financial objectives.”
2. 答案 G
解析 根据上文“Taking a careful look at your existing spending habits is one of the first steps in improving your money habits.” 可知,接下来应该具体说明如何审视自己现有的消费习惯,G项“This involves tracking all your spending for a month and then analyzing the data.(这包括记录你一个月的所有支出,然后分析数据)”符合语境,是对上文的进一步解释。
3. 答案 A
解析 根据下文“A budget ensures that your spending is focused on your priorities and that you set aside enough cash to achieve your objectives.” 可知,此处强调预算的重要性,A项“Setting and sticking to a budget is also crucial.(制定并坚持预算也很关键)”符合语境。
4. 答案 D
解析 根据上文“Additionally, wait a day or two before making a purchase.” 可知,接下来应该解释这样做的目的是什么,D项“This action can help you determine if you still want the item.(这个行为可以帮助你确定你是否仍然想要这个物品)”符合语境。
5. 答案 F
解析 根据上文“Keep in mind that adjusting your spending patterns is a process, and its effects might not be seen right away.” 以及下文“By doing so, you can achieve your financial objectives and strengthen your overall financial health.”
3. 答案 which
only the essentials are bought or kept是一个完整的句子,根据句意可推断此处需要用定语从句说明a minimalist lifestyle的具体内容;设空处指代a minimalist lifestyle,且在从句中作介词in的宾语,故填which。
7. 答案 to manage
9. 答案 in
10. 答案 what
