原文“I was always in a hurry and ______ noticed the soft music”中,前半句“in a hurry”表明作者匆忙,因此后半句应表示“几乎没注意到”。
原文“I really listened to his ______ for the first time”中,结合前文“playing the violin”,此处指听小提琴演奏,playing意为“演奏”,符合语境。

For a long time, people used the Earth’s spin to ____23____ time. Then, in the 1950s, atomic clocks (原子钟) were invented, which could keep time more ____24____ than any other kind of clock. With the help of the atomic clocks, scientists ____25____ to find “fast days” and “slow days” when the Earth spins faster or slower than usual.
Recently, there have been several ____26____ days. For example, a day last July was the shortest ever. Some research showed that there were many ____27____. The Moon’s gravity (重力) is the biggest one.

A Simple Table Brings a Neighborhood Together
Ten years ago, Kristin moved to Texas and wanted to connect with her new neighbors. She found that planning big events needed too much preparation.
One day, Kristin bought a few picnic tables from Lowe’s for a party. The Lowe’s driver set one table down in her front yard (院子) by mistake. After the party, she painted the table light green—her favorite color—and put it in the front yard, just a few feet from the sidewalk. That green table became the place where Kristin and her kids hung out. They played games and ate snacks. “It was a simple way to slow down and connect with others,” she says.
Slowly, neighbors began to stop by to introduce themselves and sit down for a chat. Kristin invited people to join her at the table for coffee or iced tea. The table became a welcoming meeting point where people naturally met together.
Kristin believes people don’t like to invite others inside because they feel their home isn’t perfect. The green table took away that worry. I’ve learned that treating guests doesn’t always need a perfect home or a big party. At the picnic table, all I have to do is show up. “For Kristin, this small change helped her feel less lonely and make friends with her neighbors. People’s greatest need is to know that they are loved,” she says.
39. Why did Kristin put a picnic table in her front yard?
A. Because there was no room in her backyard.
B. Because the driver accidentally left it there.
C. Because she wanted colorful furniture for her garden.
D. Because her children needed a place to play outside.
40. What did Kristin do with the picnic table?
A. She painted it light green. B. She used it only for big parties.
C. She returned it to the store. D. She gave it to her neighbors.
41. Why did the green table make it easier for people to connect?
A. Because the color green made people feel happy.
B. Because it took away the worry of having a perfect home.
C. Because it was in the backyard where it was more private.
D. Because Kristin always prepared free meals there.
42. What will probably happen next in this neighborhood?
A. Kristin will start a business selling green tables.
B. The city government will make rules against front yard tables.
C. More neighbors will put their own tables in their front yards.
D. People will get tired of the table and stop visiting.
B 40. A 41. B 42. C

This spring, our school started a small garden project. Each class got a piece of land to grow vegetables. At first, I thought it was just another school task. I didn’t know it would teach me so much.
We decided to grow tomatoes. Our teacher showed us how to plant and care for them. Every morning, my classmates and I watered the plants and pulled out weeds (杂草). We learned that plants need just the right amount of water and sunlight. The hardest part was waiting. Weeks passed, and nothing seemed to happen. Some classmates lost interest and stopped coming to the garden, but a few of us kept working. We didn’t give up. We continued to water and take care of the plants every day. Then one day, small green tomatoes appeared! How surprising and exciting it was! Then we watched them grow bigger and turn red day by day.
When we finally harvested our tomatoes, the whole class shared them. They tasted better than any tomatoes I had ever eaten. This experience made me truly understand that good results often come from patience and continuous effort. The tomatoes were sweet, but the lesson was truly valuable.
