When I was a young boy, every summer, Mom, Dad, my brothers and I would climb into our old car and drive for 7 hours over long mountain roads to visit Mom’s relatives in Tennessee. We always stayed in Grandma’s house there with her, Uncle Rich and Aunt Charlotte. It was a fun time with days full of excitement and joy. Often Aunt Charlotte would even make us a Thanksgiving dinner in the summertime. Some of my happiest childhood memories came from those visits.
One especially holds a special place in my heart. During that visit, I had great fun every day. One evening, I climbed into bed in the guest bedroom on the second floor of the house. Although I had played and explored the whole day and was really tired, I was still wide awake, my mind racing with the day’s sweet events. As I lay there, I heard the most pleasant sound coming from the front window below me. It was laughter. Mom, Dad, Uncle Rich, and Aunt Charlotte were down there sharing stories and telling jokes. The laughter was so happy, so joyous, that I found myself smiling. And even then in my young mind and childish heart, I realized that this is how life should be. The laughter became a sweet song to me and I fell asleep feeling all was right with the world.
Whenever my life seems too hard or crazy, I look back on that memory. And I took the lessons that Uncle Rich and Aunt Charlotte taught me. They always lived their lives with love and joy and laughter and smiles. Uncle Rich passed away many years ago but Aunt Charlotte is still alive. I write to her each week and I am so thankful to still have her in my life.
We fill lives with laughter, smiles, love and joy. We not only give ourselves happiness but also make this world a better and more beautiful place.

It’s a classic complaint in relationships, especially romantic ones: “She said she was okay with me forgetting her birthday! Then why is she throwing dishes in the kitchen? Are the two things related? ”
The answer is YES. Communication is more than words. It’s how those words are said, the tone, the order, even the choice of a particular word. It’s multi-dimensional, as explored by Deirdre Wilson and Dan Sperber in Meaning and Relevance. Consider the following example: Peter got angry and Mary left; Mary left and Peter got angry. Though identical in words, their meanings differ completely. The first one may have us thinking: Wow, Peter must get angry often if Mary leaves. The second sentence suggests that Peter wants more from Mary. Same words — a totally different context.
Human language is not a code (编码). True codes have a one-to-one relationship with meaning. One sound, one definition. This is what we see with animals. Wilson and Sperber explain that “coded communication works best when emitter (发出者) and receiver share exactly the same code. ” Not so for humans. We communicate more than the definitions of our words would suggest. This is inferential communication, and it means that we understand not only the words spoken, but the context in which they are spoken.
Irony (反语) is a great example of how powerfully we can communicate context with a few simple words. It is more than just stating the opposite. For example, when Mary says, after a boring party, “That was fun”, she is neither saying literally that the party was fun nor saying “ironically” that the party was boring. Rather, she is expressing an emotion. Three words replace paragraphs, showcasing language’s efficiency.
Wilson and Sperber concluded that human language developed and became so powerful because of two unique abilities of humans: language and the power to try to interpret mental states of others. We look for context for the words we hear. And we should be very good at absorbing this context to infer meaning.
28.What does the complaint in Paragraph 1 mainly tell us?
A.The importance of remembering important moments.
B.The inconsistency between words and meaning.
C.The necessity of indirect communication.
D.The possibility of argument in a couple's life.
29.What may make human language different from true codes?
A.The context included in understanding meanings.
B.The definitions made by words in communication.
C.The coded communication between emitter and receiver.
D.The one-to-one relationship between word and meaning.
30.How does Mary’s statement “That was fun” show about irony?
A.It uses fewer words to save time. B.It uses a long sentence to show simple feelings.
C.It needs detailed explanations to make sense. D.It uses fewer words for complex meanings.
31.What does the author suggest in communication?
A.Focusing on the opposite. B.Taking language literally.
C.Reading beyond the words. D.Avoiding using ironic tones.

Your teacher stops you and says he needs to have a word about your performance in the recent class. You worry about it all day, wondering what you might have done wrong. When you step into his office, he begins by praising you for your contributions to the class, and you wonder if this is the customary praise that starts off the typical “feedback sandwich” pattern: initiate a compliment, insert the critical feedback, and conclude with another somewhat comforting remark.
Many educators employ this “feedback sandwich” technique in their teaching practice. However, positive feedback shouldn’t merely serve as a buffer (缓冲区) for the negative; it ought to be sincerely delivered to spark and strengthen continued excellence. Here are three strategies to effectively give positive feedback.
Avoid pairing positive with negative. When positive and negative feedback always seem to coexist, the positive feedback may lose its value and be overlooked. Make sure to provide positive feedback on its own, without adding constructive criticism.
Foster a “Growth Mindset”. Psychologist Carol Dweck, an advocate of the “growth mindset”, emphasizes the brain’s adaptability and our capacity to nurture skills and talents we may initially lack. More often than not, praises tend to center on outcomes or natural abilities, such as “You have a keen eye for detail.” Or “You’re naturally gifted in event planning.” However, she notes that highlighting the effort, exploration, and problem-solving approaches can promote skill development more effectively.
Cultivate a positive feedback culture. Instead of reserving feedback for formal occasions such as performance reviews, integrate it into everyday interactions. Share informal, positive remarks during casual conversations or even when passing someone in the hallway. Furthermore, feedback shouldn’t be limited to coming from superiors. Foster a culture where team members and classmates provide constructive comments for one another. Encourage peer-to-peer recognition. Motivate them to actively share positive observations and opinions about each other’s behavior and contributions.
Embracing positive feedback not only boosts work performance but also enhances overall well-being in the long term.
32.What does the author point out at the beginning of the text?
A.The teacher’s praise often signals upcoming criticism.
B.The “feedback sandwich” tends to make students nervous.
C.Many students feel anxious about their class performance.
D.The “feedback sandwich” is an effective teaching method.
33.What is the positive feedback like?
A.Critical and harsh. B.Genuine and inspiring.
C.Frequent but formal. D.Constructive but indirect.
34.According to Carol Dweck, what should positive feedback focus on?
A.Natural talents and abilities. B.Personal qualities and character.
C.Processes and strategies. D.Final outcomes and achievements.
35.Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A.How to Build a Supportive School Culture
B.Giving Positive Feedback That Truly Works
C.Growth Mindset: The Key to Better Learning
D.The Feedback Sandwich: A Common Practice

It is said that entering high school is the first step into the real world for any student. 36 We have to make our own decisions independently. We were unaware of this from our childhood because that was when we were allowed to make mistakes, with everyone thinking that we were kids. But this doesn’t happen in high school, as we are considered adults now.
You can never expect to live a carefree life in high school. 37 We need to balance our academics and extracurricular activities and also prepare for competitive exams that lie ahead. Even as we have so much to do, we don’t want to miss out on the fun we can have with our friends.
38 One of these was when I skipped a lecture with two of my friends for the first time to watch a newly released movie. Our teacher took attendance and found out about the students who were absent, so eventually we were suspended (暂停) from our laboratory sessions for a week.
Then, there came our first high school exam. I managed to be on the list of top 10 students of my class. 39 So this time, even after all the shenanigans (恶作剧) that I indulged in, I managed to get good marks. But this was the last time that I got good marks. I lost interest in studies and indulged in gaming, watching movies and reading novels.
Thankfully, I didn’t do anything bad, but these normal activities made the situation worse, as I could not concentrate on my studies. I went through counseling (咨询) which I never thought I would ever require. 40 My parents were my sources of strength during that time. They encouraged me to study and motivated me to stay on the right path.
A.There is a lot of study pressure.
B.I was then distracted by games and movies.
C.I had many bittersweet high school experiences.
D.We are extremely excited as now we’re becoming adults.
E.I had always been a good student academically.
F.It was a difficult time for me but eventually I was able to get a decent score.
G.I was nervous because my parents always expected me to stand out.

Since the age of seven, I had always dreamed of being one of the student leaders who we looked up to. They took responsibility for us, gave instructions, organized school activities, and proudly wore their badges(徽章) while carrying our school flag and walking on the playground. They represented us and gave speeches on school issues, becoming our role models.
As I grew older, I finally could take part in the school elections. I prepared my election speech and on the day of the speeches, everyone voted. I was hopeful and prayed for a victory. However, the following morning when we gathered on the school grounds for the head-teacher’s announcement of the results, reality hit me hard. I realized that I had no chance of winning—I was neither well known nor too pretty. I became depressed and felt as though I had no friends supporting me.
Later that day, as I cried in my room, I took a deep breath and decided to change my attitude. I refused to see myself as a failure and made a determination to run for the school elections again the following year—this time, with a plan to win. I sat down at my study table and wrote down my thoughts.
Although my competitors had certain advantages such as their stylish personalities, I recognized my own advantages—good grades, friendliness, helpfulness, and most importantly, my faith in myself to be a great leader. With a whole year ahead, I began to plan my election strategies that evening.
To gain recognition(认可) and show my ability to represent my fellow students, I started making new friends and helping them at school. Besides, I attended a public speaking course to learn how to give a great election speech. By the time the elections came around, I was well-prepared, and I gave a passionate speech on the stage.

18. When did Hemingway win the Nobel Prize in Literature?

19. Which book made the greatest impression on the speaker?
A. The Sun Also Rises. B. A Farewell to Arms. C. The Old Man and the Sea.
20. What did Hemingway show to us in The Old Man and the Sea?
A. Confidence. B. Power. C. Fear.
【参考答案】18. B 19. C 20. A
【原文】
M: The Old Man and the Sea is one of Hemingway’s most lasting works and may become one of the true classics of this generation. It played a great part in his winning the Pulitzer Prize in 1953 and the 1954 Nobel Prize in Literature and confirmed his power and presence in the literary world. Hemingway is also one of my favorite writers. Besides The Old Man and the Sea, I have read some of his other works, such as The Sun Also Rises, A Farewell to Arms and The Snow of Kilimanjaro. But The Old Man and the Sea is the one that left the deepest impression on me. This novel mainly wrote about one old man alone in the sea who fishes. He caught one big fish. But he met a shark on the way home. The old man used all his skills to fight with the shark. At last, the fish he caught was eaten up by the shark, but he never gave up. This book shows to us that the confidence is just like the automobile motor, and is power which makes the person go forward.

【答案】24.D 25.C 26.B 27.C
【导语】文章主要回忆作者儿时每年夏天去田纳西州拜访亲戚的温馨往事,一段楼下亲友欢笑的记忆始终治愈着他。
【详解】24.细节理解题。根据第一段中的“When I was a young boy, every summer, Mom, Dad, my brothers and I would climb into our old car and drive for 7 hours over long mountain roads to visit Mom’s relatives in Tennessee.(小时候,每年夏天我和父母、兄弟们都会坐上旧车,沿漫长山路开7个小时去田纳西看望母亲的亲戚。)”可知,长途驱车是为了和亲戚相聚。
25.词句猜测题。根据第一段 “Some of my happiest childhood memories came from those visits.(我童年最快乐的一些回忆来自那些拜访)”以及第二段 “One especially holds a special place in my heart. (其中一次尤其在我心中占有特殊的位置)”可知,“One” 指代的是一次拜访。
26.细节理解题。根据第二段中的“Although I had played and explored the whole day and was really tired, I was still wide awake, my mind racing with the day’s sweet events.(尽管玩了一整天十分疲惫,我却毫无睡意,脑海里不断回放白天美好的点点滴滴。)”可知,作者内心太过兴奋所以睡不着。

C
【答案】28.B 29.A 30.D 31.C
【导语】文章主要介绍人类语言交流特点及反语在交流中的作用。
【详解】28.推理判断题。根据第一段“She said she was okay with me forgetting her birthday! Then why is she throwing dishes in the kitchen? Are the two things related?(她说她不介意我忘记她的生日!那她为什么在厨房里摔盘子呢?这两件事有关系吗?)”以及第二段“Communication is more than words. It’s how those words are said, the tone, the order, even the choice of a particular word.(沟通不仅仅是言语,还包括说话的方式、语调、顺序,甚至某个词语的选择)”可推知,第一段的抱怨主要表明了言语和意思之间的不一致。
29.细节理解题。根据第三段“Human language is not a code (编码). This is inferential communication, and it means that we understand not only the words spoken, but the context in which they are spoken.(人类语言并非一种编码。
根据倒数第二段“Irony (反语) is a great example of how powerfully we can communicate context with a few simple words. It is more than just stating the opposite. For example, when Mary says, after a boring party, “That was fun”, she is neither saying literally that the party was fun nor saying “ironically” that the party was boring. Rather, she is expressing an emotion.
根据最后一段“Wilson and Sperber concluded that human language developed and became so powerful because of two unique abilities of humans: language and the power to try to interpret mental states of others. We look for context for the words we hear. And we should be very good at absorbing this context to infer meaning.(威尔逊和斯佩伯得出结论:人类语言之所以发展并变得如此强大,是因为人类具备两种独特的能力:语言本身,以及解读他人心理状态的能力。我们会在听到的词语中寻找语境,并且应当非常擅长吸收这些语境以推断其含义)”可推知,作者认为在交流中应该理解话语背后的意思,也就是不仅仅局限于字面意思。

【答案】32.A 33.B 34.C 35.B
【导语】文章主要讲述了如何有效给予积极反馈,指出“反馈三明治”的不足并提出三种改进策略。
【详解】32.细节理解题。根据第一段中“When you step into his office, he begins by praising you for your contributions to the class, and you wonder if this is the customary praise that starts off the typical “feedback sandwich” pattern: initiate a compliment, insert the critical feedback, and conclude with another somewhat comforting remark. (当你走进他的办公室时,他开始表扬你对课堂的贡献,而你在想,这是否就是那种典型的“反馈三明治”模式的开场惯例式表扬:先予以夸赞,中间插入批评意见,最后再用一番略带安抚的话语收尾)”可知,作者开篇指出老师的表扬往往预示着即将到来的批评。
33.细节理解题。根据第二段中“However, positive feedback shouldn’t merely serve as a buffer (缓冲区) for the negative; it ought to be sincerely delivered to spark and strengthen continued excellence. (然而,积极反馈不应仅仅充当负面评价的缓冲;它应当真诚地表达,激发并巩固持续的优秀表现)”可知,积极反馈应当是真诚且鼓舞人心的。
34.细节理解题。根据第四段中“However, she notes that highlighting the effort, exploration, and problem‑solving approaches can promote skill development more effectively. (然而,她指出强调努力、探索以及解决问题的方法能够更有效地促进技能发展)”可知,Carol Dweck认为积极反馈应聚焦过程与方法策略。
35.主旨大意题。根据第二段中“Here are three strategies to effectively give positive feedback. (以下是三条有效给出积极反馈的策略)”以及全文内容可知,文章主要介绍如何给出真正有效的积极反馈。B项“给予真正有效的积极反馈”精准概括文章核心,是文章的最佳标题。
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

第二节(满分25分)
67.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
注意: 1.续写词数应为 150 左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
The following day, I anxiously waited for the results.

__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:
The following day, I anxiously waited for the results. Would my effort pay off? Would I achieve my goal of becoming one of the student leaders? When the principal eventually announced that I had been elected with the second-highest number of votes, I couldn’t help but jump up with excitement. With a bright smile, I walked up to the stage to loud cheers from my fellow students. Their joy showed me that my victory was not just mine, but theirs as well.
Later, I realized that I had achieved far more than what I had expected. In addition to being appointed as one of the student leaders, I had made numerous friends along the way who now saw me as someone always willing to lend a helping hand. While pursuing my dream, I had become a source of inspiration and hope for other students. By being myself, I had shown them that success would be achievable for anyone if they stuck to their goals, worked hard and believed in themselves.
