The journey of growing up often involves (涉及) important lessons about self-acceptance. Growth is not about being perfect, but about having the courage to understand who you are. How do you feel about yourself? Are you happy with yourself? Here are the answers from Zhou Wei and Sally.
When I was in primary school, I was not outgoing (外向的) like some of my friends. I always felt shy when the teacher asked me a question in class. What if I didn’t answer it correctly? But as I grew up, I realized that shyness is a problem that most young people face. If we practise more, we can get over it and feel more comfortable with ourselves.
—Zhou Wei
I’ve got brown eyes and long wavy hair, and I’m tall and strong for my age. I like the way I look and I feel confident. In fact, it’s amazing and it allows me to play my favourite sport—basketball every day. In my opinion, it doesn’t matter what a person looks like. What matters most is that we should love ourselves. Real friends don’t care about appearance.
—Sally
31. What was Zhou Wei’s main problem when he was in primary school?
A. He had few friends. B. He was weak in sports.
C. He felt shy in class. D. He was always unhappy.
32. What do we know about Sally?
A. She is not so sure of herself. B. Her friends are well built.
C. Her friends care about her look. D. She likes basketball best.
33. Where can we probably read the text?
A. In a school magazine. B. From a story book.
C. On a notice board. D. In a travel guide.
B
Many young people in China worry too much about how they look. If you always look in the mirror and see only your small flaws (缺陷), you are not alone.
On social media, a topic called “How unfriendly is the world to plain-looking girls?” got much attention. Many girls shared their stories. One girl called Susie said her friends often cut her out of group photos because they thought she was too fat. Another college student, Tang Yuqi, said “My nose is not high enough, and my eyes are small.” She won’t even open the door without makeup. “I just can’t accept myself if I’m not wearing it,” she said.
Why do young people feel anxious about their looks? Spending more time online means seeing more ads about “perfect” looks. The wrong information online makes young people feel they are not good enough.
Being anxious for a long time can make people sick (生病的) in both body and mind. Some even have surgery (手术) to try to become “beautiful”. But beauty doesn’t come from makeup or being thin. Being taller or having a perfect look won’t solve the problem.
The truth is, everyone is different, and that’s what makes us special. As a popular TV show said, “I am not perfect. I am perfect when I fully understand myself.”
34. Why was Tang Yuqi not so confident about herself?
A. Because she thought she was too fat. B. Because she had surgery on her eyes.
C. Because she didn’t like wearing makeup. D. Because her nose wasn’t high enough.
35. What does “anxious” probably mean in Paragraph 3?
A. Excited. B. Surprised. C. Worried. D. Relaxed.
36. Why did the writer write this text?
A. To share ways of not getting sick. B. To show how to use social media.
C. To teach girls useful makeup skills. D. To help understand our looks correctly.
C
Malaria (疟疾) has been a dangerous disease for a long time. Many people have died of this disease. Luckily, Chinese scientist Tu Youyou found a good medicine called qinghaosu.
Over fifty years ago, the government asked Tu to be the leader of a national project to find a medicine for malaria. Her team found a special way through reading books about traditional Chinese medicine. After reading over 2,000 old books, they collected more than 600 plants and found about 380 possible treatments.
One treatment about 1,600 years ago used a special plant. Tu found it worked well and tried to get the qinghaosu from it. At first, she failed. So she went back to the old books and found a better way, She used a low-temperature (低温) way to get the qinghaosu and succeeded in 1972.
After tests showed qinghaosu could treat malaria in animals, Tu and two friends tested it on themselves first. The medicine was safe and all patients in the test got better. Later, qinghaosu became the main treatment for malaria around the world, saving many lives.
In 2015, Tu won the Nobel Prize. But she didn’t take all the credit (荣誉). She thanked her team and Chinese traditional medicine. She once said, “Every scientist dreams of doing something that can help the world.”

A. To create a special plant. B. To collect old traditional books.

Have you ever noticed plants? Can they do something as we do? In your eyes, they can’t talk or walk and they can’t think like us, right? But is that true? A TV show called The Green Planet lets us see plants in a new way. It shows us the amazing things that plants can do.
Plants compete with each other to live. In the rainforest, different plants race for sunlight. The forest floor is like a “war field” because only 2% of sunlight reaches it. Some plants spread (伸展) their big leaves to get light. But a vine (藤本植物) may catch them. Then a fast-growing tree passes them all. This tree has special leaves, so the vine can’t hold on.
▲ Euphrates poplar trees (胡杨) connect their roots. If one tree finds water, it shares with others. Studies show plants use fungus (真菌) to talk to each other, like Wi-Fi. If a tomato plant gets sick, it can tell plants around it.
The TV show makes us surprised at plants and helps us understand they are important. “Plants are the needs of all life. We need them for every meal we eat and every breath we take.” said the host of the show. We should care for wild plants as much as our houseplants. Here are some useful ways.
40. How does the writer start the topic?
A. By listing numbers. B. By telling a story.
C. By asking questions. D. By making comparisons.
41. Why is the forest floor called a “war field”?
A. Because animals fight there often. B. Because the weather is too hot there.
C. Because people take away their land. D. Because plants compete strongly for sunlight.
42. Which of the following can be put in the ▲ ?
A. Different plants get the same light. B. Plants also help each other.
C. Plants can take a breath like people do. D. Plants are important for people.
43. What is the writer going to talk about next?
A. Why we should look after plants. B. What amazing things plants can do.
C. What we can do to care for plants. D. How people can find the wild plants.
E
If you are reading this now, it is because these words are printed on this page. Could this happen 2,000 years ago? Well, you could have read some words, but the words wouldn’t be printed by a machine on paper.
Modern printing began in China between 200 BC and 200 AD. A block of wood was carved (刻) so that the words or pictures stood out. Ink (墨) was put on the wood and then cloth was put on top of the wood. Later, in 105 AD, paper-making was invented in China and printing was done mostly on paper after that.
Much later, a new method (方法) called “movable type” was invented. It used small blocks made of metal (金属) with characters or letters. The blocks could be moved around easily to make a whole page of printed text. Besides. it was much faster than carving a block of wood. Methods to do this were invented in China in 1040.
Later this method started to be used in Europe around 1439. Printing became much easier and faster and printing became popular everywhere.
Now, we send emails, texts and photos to each other. We can download books and read on our phones. Ideas and knowledge are travelling faster than at any other time in history and the screen is taking the place of the page for many people.
44. When did modern printing begin in China?
A. In 105AD. B. In 1040.
C. In 1439. D. Between 200 BC and 200 AD.
45. Which of the following is the good point of “movable type”?
A. It didn’t need ink for printing any more. B. People could print more pages at a time.
C. It was much faster than carving a wood block. D. The blocks could be used to print pictures.
46. What can we learn about printing from the text?
A. China was first to invent printing methods.
B. Printing is not as important as before today.
C. Screens are starting to take the place of paper.
D. Printing technology has been developing over time.
47. What is the best title (标题) for the text?
A. How Chinese People Invented Paper. B. Modern Technology Changes Books.
C. The History of Printing Development. D. The Importance of Woodblock Printing.

Once a man saw a butterfly try to get out of its chrysalis (蛹), so he cut the chrysalis and the butterfly came out easily. But to his surprise, the butterfly was unable to fly. As we all know, if the butterfly doesn’t struggle (挣扎) to get out of the chrysalis, it can’t fly. Similarly, the challenges of life bring out the best in young people and prepare (做准备) the ability to “fly”.
When people are young, meeting and taking on challenges will make them strong and ready to face difficulties in life. For successful people, the more challenges they have had, the more successful they are. One famous man, Henry, who now has many big factories, used to sell pies on the street when he was young. Another successful man is Eric. His father died when he was only 16. But he worked hard in the day and studied hard at night. In a way, his father’s death made him grow up fast. At the age of 30, he set up a university. So you see he took on the challenges and got over them bravely instead of giving up. Today, not only he himself, but also his brothers and sisters are leading successful lives.

Small Acts for Good Friendships
It’s known to all that friendship plays an important role in our daily life. Good friendships make our life happy and colorful. A true friend is someone to share joy and sadness with.
There are some useful small acts for us to get along well with friends. First, be sincere and learn to listen. If your friends have some problems, listen to them carefully with a warm heart. Second, everyone is different, so we don’t have to hold the same point on every matter. It’s necessary to understand others and respect their differences. Third, try to be helpful and willing to share.
Small acts like these can truly make a big difference and I really hope we can maintain good friendships in our daily life.
