Joss Naylor is a sheep farmer from the Lake District. Among most people, his name means little, but in certain circles, he is known as one of the finest mountain runners to have ever lived.
Joss has lived and farmed all his life in an area of the Lake District which has many mountains, including the tallest mountain in England. Joss has an almost superhuman ability to run at speed over mountains. However, he wasn’t always a mountain runner. As a young man, he was advised to give up farming because of serious back problems. But, when he was 24, he was tired of being told to take it easy.
Nothing can stop a good man from being better! He continued working and took up running. When he ran his first mountain race, he discovered that he fell in love with it. All his time spent herding (放牧) sheep on the mountains had prepared him for this.
His achievements are nothing short of famous. For example, he smashed his own record and set a new one. At the age of 50, he ran up 214 mountains. “It is a wonderful experience though the practice is very hard,” he said. Many of his runs have raised money for charity, and he is popular in the community.
He keeps writing and sharing his experiences about his climbs. “I want people back home—especially family and friends who support me—to get a real feel for what it’s like,” he said.

On May 10, 2025, the 2025 Jiangsu Football City League started at the stadium of Zhenjiang Sports & Exhibition Center. It was a provincial amateur (业余的) football competition, but it became very popular in China quickly. More than 190,000 people watched the games in person. Online, hundreds of millions of people watched them too, according to Xinhua.
The league, also called “Suchao”, ran from May to November. There were 13 teams, each from a different city in Jiangsu. First, all the 13 teams played against each other once. Then the top 8 teams moved to the knockout stage. They played to decide the top 4 teams, and finally the champion.
One big reason for the league’s success was that many common people could join it. There were 516 players in all. Over 65% of them have different jobs—like college students, teachers, and delivery workers. Liu Tong, from the Jiangsu Provincial Sports Bureau, said, “This is a new way to do basic‑level soccer. It makes the game closer to people.”
Besides, the league was popular because of its fun cultural vibe (气氛). Teams’ nicknames were named after local favourites: Yancheng is known for Milu deer, and Nanjing is known for its tasty salted duck. Soccer commentator (评论员) Xu Yifan said, “The league’s soccer shows that if we focus on local culture, and let more people join in and have good times, community soccer can really work.”
