Growing up in America as a child of first-generation Chinese immigrants, I was used to living in two worlds. But as I grew older, the Chinese side faded away. While I happily accepted the red envelopes during Lunar New Year and consumed mooncakes on the Mid-Autumn Festival, I didn’t feel connected to the culture.
Before my children were born, I had already decided that I would teach them Mandarin (普通话). I felt that they ought to be able to speak the language of their heritage.
Parenting books advised describing your actions while playing with your children, so I started digging out the long-buried words during every activity: “ball”, “eat”, “sleep”, “play”. However, as this exercise continued, the gaps in my Mandarin became more and more obvious. Luckily, the ready availability of Chinese language media — from books to television shows to music — made things much easier. As they grew older, I took them to the local library where the tale of the Monkey King and the legend of Chang’e immediately caught their imagination.
When I see my son converse with his grandfather in Mandarin or when my daughter insists on fish for Lunar New Year, the time spent reading all those books closely feels well-spent.
Last fall, my youngest son recited Li Bai’s “Quiet Night Thoughts” for the Moon Festival performance at his preschool. His voice rang out with confidence and his arms swept up to indicate the moon above. Joy and wonder lit up my father’s face as he listened to the familiar verses from the mouth of his grandson.
Decades ago, my Chinese teacher explained to me how the moon connects all those who seek its light, no matter how far apart they are. So, too, does language. It influences culture and history, and connects future generations to past ones.

In countries where sporting success carries national prestige, young athletes may learn early that winning is the clearest measure of progress. Canada’s elite ice-hockey(冰球) system has certainly produced world-class players. Yet a 2026 study suggests that the very culture that helps identify and push talented teenagers may also narrow the meaning of development too far.
Researchers interviewed six coaches known for helping athletes succeed both on and off the ice. Their argument was not that competitive standards should be lowered. Rather, they questioned the assumption that technical skill, selection and victories must compete with character, leadership and psychological well-being for attention. Several believed the opposite: players who learn to communicate, cooperate and handle pressure may ultimately become stronger athletes as well as more capable adults.
The difficulty is that the incentives(激励制度) surrounding teenage hockey often point in another direction. As players approach eligibility(资格赛) for major junior drafts, immediate results become highly visible to families, coaches and scouts. Training intensifies(更激励), opportunities feel scarce, and a short period of poor performance can seem costly. Under those conditions, a victory-first mentality can appear reasonable. Supporters might argue that elite sport is, by definition, demanding, and that shielding promising players from pressure could leave them unprepared for professional competition.
However, the coaches in the study warned that pressure can become self-defeating when it produces excessive training, burnout or unhealthy team environments. They also rejected the idea that organizations must choose between producing better people and producing better players. The more useful question, they suggested, is what kind of culture allows both goals to reinforce each other. That would require more than a few inspirational talks. Clear coaching principles, consistent expectations, stronger support networks and greater parental involvement may all be necessary, especially before competitive pressures rise significantly in the mid-teen years.
The study is small and based on interviews rather than long-term performance data, so it cannot prove that it will guarantee more victories. Still, it raises a difficult sporting question: if a system creates champions but damages some of the young people passing through it, should success be measured only by who reaches the top?
1.What view do some coaches question?
A. Young athletes are becoming less ambitious.
B. Athletic training should come before education.
C. Sporting excellence conflicts with personal growth.
D. Personal qualities and athletic skills develop together.
2.What is the meaning of the underlined word “mentality”?
A. Habit. B. Rule. C. Capacity. D. Attitude.
3.What is the main idea of paragraph 4?
A. Too much training often causes burnout.
B. Competitive pressure may harm team culture.
C. Player development depends mainly on team culture.
D. Sporting success and personal growth can be combined.
4.What is the best title for the text?
A. How Does Pressure Shape Young Hockey Players?
B. Why Does Winning Matter in the Youth Hockey?
C. What Makes a Young Hockey Player Successful?
D. How Can Hockey Develop Better Young Players?
D
For many Chinese teenagers, the stopwatch in PE class is no longer just a training tool. Physical education now matters to entrance examinations in many places. That has made PE harder to ignore — but has it made students more willing to exercise?
A study published in Scientific Reports in August 2026 offers an encouraging answer. Researchers surveyed 905 junior-high students from nine schools in Tianjin and examined how their understanding of the PE examination was related to their attitudes and exercise behaviour. Students who viewed the exam more positively also tended to report more favourable attitudes toward exercise and more physical activity. Exercise attitude partly explained the connection, accounting for about 27 percent of the overall association. The researchers argue that a well-understood assessment can give students a reason to train and may help connect school requirements with healthier routines.
Yet another 2026 study reaches a more cautious conclusion. Drawing on interviews, focus groups and classroom observations, researchers found that mandatory fitness testing could make exercise increasingly score-driven. Some students trained intensely for running, jumping or strength events they did not enjoy, then reduced their activity once the exam was over. Teachers, too, described pressure to concentrate on tested items rather than offer a wider range of sports. From this perspective, an exam may improve short-term fitness while weakening the intrinsic motivation(内驱力) needed for lifelong exercise.
The apparent disagreement may be more useful than choosing one study over the other. An examination can raise the status of PE and encourage students who might otherwise avoid exercise, but what happens depends partly on how the requirement is experienced. If students understand only the points attached to a task, exercise can become another subject to survive. If teachers also provide choice, enjoyment and a sense of progress, the same assessment may become a starting point rather than an endpoint.
Perhaps the real question, then, is not whether PE should be tested, but what the test should teach. A successful system would not simply produce faster runners in examination season. It would leave students with enough confidence and autonomy to keep moving after the stopwatch is put away.
1.According to the first study, how do students feel about physical activities?
A. They feel overwhelmed by them. B. They consider them less challenging.
C. They see them in a more positive light. D. They find them increasingly demanding.
2.What do teachers think of the new sports requirement?
A. It gives PE greater importance. B. It makes training more efficient.
C. It makes students hard to concentrate. D. It leaves less room for varied activities.
3.What is the main idea of paragraph 4?
A. PE exams benefit previously inactive students.
B. Enjoyment matters more than assessment in PE.
C. Exercise choices determine how students perform.
D. The effect of testing rests on how it is experienced.
4.What does the stopwatch represent, according to the passage?
A. A reliable measure of physical fitness. B. A growing interest in competitive sport.
C. An exam-centered approach to exercise. D. An effective way to build healthy habits.

If you ask people how today’s children are doing, you will likely get an earful of complaints and concerns. Many believe that children today are less resilient, less empathetic, and less mentally healthy than previous generations. Headlines frequently warn of a youth crisis, and many parents quietly worry about the future. ____16____
Studies suggest that young people today are, in many ways, doing better than those of previous generations. Their basic literacy (素养) and curiosity have improved. They are more empathetic, more open-minded and inclusive than those 50 years ago. ____17____ Konrath and her colleagues surveyed nearly 700 adolescents and found that 73% had volunteered or donated to charities.
____18____ Many factors are probably at play, but experts believe that changes in parenting and educational styles could be an important driver. One significant change in parenting is a greater focus on emotional literacy. “Over the past 15 years of clinical work, many young children have come in with a richer emotional vocabulary than those I saw earlier in my career,” says Tracy, a clinical psychologist. Meanwhile, more schools have introduced social and emotional learning programs that encourage empathy and self-control.
What about the role of social media? It is often blamed for damaging young people. Even experts support banning smartphones in schools. ____19____ Some studies, however, find that technology may be helping kids connect with others, find support, and learn about world issues. “It can make them more thoughtful, conscious citizens,” Konrath says.
So why does the negative view of young people remain so common? One reason is that our minds are built to notice threats. Our ancestors who noticed danger were more likely to survive, which may explain why negative information attracts more attention than positive news. Cognitive (认知的) biases also make people remember the past as better than it actually was. ____20____ Today’s young people are, on the whole, doing quite well.
A. The big question is why.
B. They are more willing to offer help, too.
C. Yet the recent research tells a different story.
D. There is no doubt that social media poses risks.
E. Older generations were clearly happier and healthier.
F. They fear their children may struggle to find decent jobs.
G. Whatever the reason, the negative view rarely matches reality.

Elliot Edwards had always been a curious boy, full of questions about life. But as he grew older, the voices around him, “Questions don’t help you earn a living”, slowly silenced his wonder. The only shadow heavier than his unspoken curiosity was the distance between him and his younger brother Thomas.
Years ago, in the heat of a quarrel, Elliot’s arm swept across the table, accidentally knocking over Thomas’ treasured music box onto the floor. It was a gift from their grandfather to Thomas on his birthday. The delicate steel comb (音梳) was bent and useless. Tiny gears (齿轮) spilled out across the floor. When Elliot clumsily picked it up and opened it, the box only produced broken notes before it fell silent forever. After the fight, Thomas had left, and the brothers had not spoken since.
For over ten years, Elliot worked as a library worker, sweeping floors among silent books, his own spirit gathering dust like the shelves he cared for. One rainy Wednesday, he found a well-worn wool scarf folded neatly in the corner while cleaning shelves. It belonged to Mrs. Davies, a retired teacher who visited weekly. When she hurried back, eyes wet, she said softly, “This was my late husband’s last gift. We’d fought, and he gave it to apologize before he passed away. Don’t wait till it’s too late to make amends (弥补), dear.” Elliot watched her hold the scarf tight. For the first time, he thought of the music box at home, and wondered if he could fix his bond with Thomas.
Then, behind an old heater, he found it: a wooden music box, silent but still glowing slightly. On the back of the box, carved into the wood were their grandfather’s words: “The sweetest melody plays when hearts sing together.” Memories rushed back — the happy time they spent together, Thomas’s hurt face, the weight of regret he had carried all these years.
Rain hit the window. Elliot held the music box tight. Deep down, he knew he needed to find Thomas — he had to fix their bond before it was too late.

The next day, he bought a new comb and started to fix the box.

根据第二段“They questioned the assumption that technical skill, selection and victories must compete with character, leadership and psychological well-being for attention.(他们质疑这样一种假设:技术、选拔和胜利必须与品格、领导力和心理健康争夺关注)”可知,一些教练质疑的是“竞技卓越与个人成长彼此冲突”这一看法。
第三段先说明选秀临近、机会稀缺、短期表现不佳代价很高,随后说“Under those conditions, a victory-first mentality can appear reasonable.(在这种情况下,一种‘胜利优先’的……
结尾又以“should success be measured only by who reaches the top?(成功是否只应由谁登顶来衡量)”再次点题。因此“What Makes a Young Hockey Player Successful?”
12. According to the first study, how do students feel about physical activities?
A. They feel overwhelmed by them. B. They consider them less challenging.
C. They see them in a more positive light. D. They find them increasingly demanding.
13. What do teachers think of the new sports requirement?
A. It gives PE greater importance. B. It makes training more efficient.
C. It makes students hard to concentrate. D. It leaves less room for varied activities.
14. What is the main idea of paragraph 4?
A. PE exams benefit previously inactive students.
B. Enjoyment matters more than assessment in PE.
C. Exercise choices determine how students perform.
D. The effect of testing rests on how it is experienced.
15. What does the stopwatch represent, according to the passage?
A. A reliable measure of physical fitness. B. A growing interest in competitive sport.
C. An exam-centered approach to exercise. D. An effective way to build healthy habits.
C 13. D 14. D 15. C
根据第二段“Students who viewed the exam more positively also tended to report more favourable attitudes toward exercise and more physical activity.(对体育考试看法更积极的学生,往往也表现出更积极的运动态度和更多身体活动)”可知,第一项研究显示学生会以更积极的眼光看待体育活动。
根据第三段“Teachers, too, described pressure to concentrate on tested items rather than offer a wider range of sports.(教师也提到,他们面临着把重点放在考试项目上、而非提供更广泛体育活动的压力)”可知,新要求会压缩多样化体育活动的空间。
C 17. B 18. A 19. D 20. G

A项“The big question is why.(重要的问题是为什么)”能够自然引出下文原因分析。
根据上文“It is often blamed for damaging young people. Even experts support banning smartphones in schools.(社交媒体常被指责伤害年轻人,甚至专家也支持学校禁用智能手机)”和下文“Some studies, however, find that technology may be helping kids...(然而,一些研究发现科技也可能帮助孩子……)” D项“There is no doubt that social media poses risks.(毫无疑问,社交媒体存在风险)”符合逻辑。
G项“Whatever the reason, the negative view rarely matches reality.(无论原因是什么,这种负面看法很少与现实相符)”总结上文并衔接结论。

Which Works Better: Peer Learning or Independent Learning?
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Which Works Better: Peer Learning or Independent Learning?
From my perspective, peer learning works better for most students.
With classmates working together, we can share different ideas, solving problems more efficiently. Not only does it deepen our understanding, but it also builds communication skills. If time permits, group discussions often spark creative solutions that we might never discover alone.
That said, independent learning still matters. What we should do is combine both approaches, using peer learning to exchange ideas while developing self-study habits. Only in this way can we achieve real academic growth.

注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
The next day, he bought a new comb and started to fix the box.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Elliot stood before Thomas’ house, with the music box in his hands.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The next day, he bought a new comb and started to fix the box. At first, his hands shook as he fitted the tiny gears back into place. More than once, the box gave only a dull click, and frustration tempted him to stop. Yet Mrs. Davies’s words and his grandfather’s message kept returning to him. He searched repair manuals, watched videos and tried again. Late that evening, a clear, gentle melody finally filled the room. Elliot froze, then smiled through sudden tears. Repairing the box had not erased the past, but it gave him the courage to face it. He wrapped the music box carefully and found Thomas’s address.
Elliot stood before Thomas’ house, with the music box in his hands. For a moment, he almost turned away, but the door opened. Thomas stared at him, surprised and guarded. “I’m sorry,” Elliot said, holding out the box. “I should have said it years ago.” He wound the key, and their grandfather’s familiar melody rose between them. Thomas’s expression softened. After a long silence, he reached for the box and then pulled Elliot into a hug. Neither brother could repair the lost years, but they could stop adding to them. As the music played, Elliot understood that some questions were worth asking after all — especially the one that could reopen a closed heart: Can we begin again?
