When she checked out that day in July 2020, she asked the woman at the register if she was Danielle Moore, the bookstore's owner. "Yeah, are you Leslie?" Moore replied, flashing her signature bright smile. She slipped Leslie a birthday card signed by each staff member, thanking her for celebrating her birthday at the store. "Mom, that's a real birthday card," said one of her sons, looking surprised. Leslie was surprised too. Sure, she had messaged the bookstore on Instagram, asking its hours and casually mentioning she'd be visiting for her birthday. But still. "Moore didn't need to do that," she says. "When people do a hospitality touch like that above and beyond, it just sticks with you." She and her family are store regulars today. Since 2019, Moore has been adding her personal touch to everything she does at Semicolon. Inside, shelves stretch floor to ceiling, with front-facing books displayed like art. The walls are packed with prints, paintings and quotes. Comfy couches invite visitors to read, and handmade pillows featuring literary icons like Audre Lorde and Octavia E. Butler add to the homey vibe. "We want it to feel cozy, warm and full of love," she says. Courtenay Joseph started going to Semicolon in June 2020. After Moore's husband died, she wanted to support the couple's businesses. Now a mom, she often brings her young children to the store. That's one of the unusual features that earned a major architecture honor — the 2021 RIBA International Prize — for Friendship Hospital, an 80-bed rural community hospital in Bangladesh. It is a demonstration of how beautiful architecture can be achieved through good design when working with a relatively modest budget and with difficult contextual restrictions. Located in Shyamnagar in the southern region of Bangladesh, Friendship Hospital was designed to meld (融合) with the water-laden local environment, which is filled with shrimp fisheries and crisscrossed by rivers. The hospital is surrounded by former grain fields that now sit underwater due to sea level rise (the land has been transformed into the shrimp fisheries as a result). But the substantial supply of water surrounding the structure can't be easily used for drinking water and other purposes because of its high salinity level (含盐量). The hospital's relationship with rainwater was a key element in the prize. Its major design feature is a canal that zigzags along the length of the hospital, splitting the outpatient building from the building for inpatient services. The canal collects rainwater from the site, which is then stored in a tank so that it can be used by the hospital. The cycle of disastrous flooding in Bangladesh is caused by the combination of cyclones, monsoons and snowmelt from the Himalayas. As climate change makes rainfall more unstable and powerful storms even more intense, millions in Bangladesh are facing destructive effects, including loss of agricultural land due to sea level rise. The designer, architect Kashef Chowdhury hopes the award will inspire people to commit to architecture that cares for humans and nature alike. "I am encouraged that this may inspire more of us to commit, not in spite of, but because of limitations of resources and means, to an architecture of care both for humanity and for nature, to rise collectively to the urgencies that we face today on a planetary scale," Chowdhury said. 28. What leads Friendship Hospital to win the architecture prize? A. Its service level. B. Its design philosophy. C. Its long history. D. Its hard construction. 29. How does Friendship Hospital tackle local rainwater? A. It collects rainwater for hospital use. B. It recycles rainwater for farm irrigation. C. It desalts rainwater for patients' daily drinking. D. It stores rainwater in tanks for shrimp fisheries. 30. What message does Chowdhury mainly convey? A. Be in awe of nature. B. Man can overcome nature. C. Be at one with nature. D. Inspiration springs from nature. 31. What can be a suitable title for the text? A. A RIBA International Prize in Bangladesh B. A Hospital's Victory over Climate Change C. A Special Canal: An Amazing Architecture World D. A Prized Hospital: Fitting into a Watery Environment D As tech companies roll out platforms specifically designed for health care consultation, AI is rapidly becoming a key player in many people's medical decisions. According to OpenAI, the maker of ChatGPT, more than 40 million people consult the platform every day for health information. But new research suggests AI may mislead users in certain medical scenarios (场景). One risk: While AI puts vast medical knowledge at your fingertips, many laypeople (外行) don't know how to use it effectively. In a study published recently in the journal Nature Medicine, researchers tried to model how people use AI chatbots by giving participants medical scenarios and asking them to consult AI tools. After conversing with the bots, participants correctly identified the hypothetical condition only about a third of the time. Only 43% made the correct decision about next steps, such as whether to go to the emergency room or stay home. "People don't know what they are supposed to be telling the model," says Andrew Bean, who studies AI systems at Oxford University and is one of the authors on this study. Bean says often when using AI, arriving at a helpful conclusion comes down to word choice. "Doctors are trained to ask you questions about symptoms you might not have realized you should have mentioned," says Bean. In one scenario, two different users gave slightly different descriptions of the same scenario. One of them described "the worst headache I've ever had," and was directed by the AI to go to the emergency room immediately. The other — who did not use that clear description — was told to take aspirin and stay home. "Turns out this was actually a life-threatening condition," says Bean. There are some instances when AI works well in identifying medical issues — in some studies, large language models have sometimes matched or even outperformed doctors on diagnostic reasoning tasks. But the way people use AI Chatbots, says Bean, is far more messy than the controlled, clinical situations in which it performs well. 32. How is the new research conducted? A. By comparing AI responses with hospital records. B. By giving participants medical cases and AI tools. C. By interviewing doctors about their daily use of AI. D. By asking patients to describe their real symptoms. 33. What is Bean's attitude towards common people using AI for medical advice? A. Negative. B. Optimistic. C. Concerned. D. Objective. 34. Why is the headache example mentioned in paragraph 4? A. To illustrate the effect of word choice. B. To prove AI helpful for disease treatment. C. To indicate headaches are often serious. D. To remind people to care for their health. 35. What is the author's purpose in writing the text? A. To compare AI with human doctors. B. To encourage the use of AI for health. C. To describe the features of ChatGPT. D. To warn of AI risks in medical advice. 第二节 (共 5 小题;每小题 2.5 分,满分 12.5 分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Resumes (简历) can be a simple yet highly complex tool to understand. In the front row, dispirited and untidy, sat Teddy Stoddard. She had observed him the previous year: he rarely played with others, his clothes were always soiled, and he often smelled. Worse, he was bad-tempered. She had even taken delight in scrawling large red F's across his papers. Later, school policy required reviewing each child's records. She postponed Teddy's, but when she finally read it, her jaw dropped. His first-grade teacher wrote, "Teddy is bright and joyful, a pleasure to teach." Second grade: "Excellent student, well-liked, but his mother is terminally ill." Third grade: "His mother's death has crushed him; his father is uninvolved." Fourth grade: "Withdrawn, sleeps in class, few friends." Mrs. Thompson was deeply ashamed. At Christmas, presents arrived wrapped in ribbons and shiny paper — except Teddy's, which was clumsily covered in brown grocery bag paper. She intentionally opened it in front of everyone. Inside lay a cheap rhinestone bracelet (手镯) with several stones missing and a bottle one-quarter full of perfume (香水). Some children giggled, but she silenced them by putting on the bracelet and dabbing the perfume, exclaiming how lovely they were. After school, Teddy hesitated to say, "Today you smelled just like my mom used to." She cried for an hour. That day, she decided to stop teaching subjects and start teaching children. She paid special attention to Teddy, encouraging him constantly. His mind flourished; by June, he was one of the brightest, and despite her earlier lie, he became her favorite. A year later, a note appeared under her door: "You're the best teacher I ever had." Six years later, he wrote he had finished high school third in his class. Four years after that, he wrote he would graduate college with highest honors. Then another four years, a letter signed "Theodore F. Stoddard, MD." Finally, a spring letter said he was getting married, his father had died, and he asked her to sit in the mother-of-the-groom's (新郎) place. She agreed. 注意: 1. 续写词数应为 150 个左右; 2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 Paragraph 1: On the wedding day, Mrs. Thompson wore that bracelet and the perfume. ______________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2: Mrs. Thompson, tears streaming, shook her head gently. ______________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
