As a volunteer firefighter, Knull was well-trained and experienced. When Knull noticed thick smoke rising from the mountainside, she knew what was happening. “My first thought was that there was a fire, so I used my experience to read the smoke, which way the wind blew and how close it was,” she later said.
Before all the people were ordered to evacuate (撤离), Knull was already in action. She rushed to a nearby hotel and knocked on doors one by one to warn the visitors. “Please be careful! There’s a fire coming. Get ready to evacuate,” she told each person she met. Then, Knull remembered that there was a hiker campground not far away. Those hikers might have no idea about the danger. Without thinking twice, she set off on foot. The path was dusty, and the air was getting hotter as she got closer to the campground. When she arrived, she started searching for the hikers and guided them to safety.
Rebecca Tocher, one of the hikers in Knull’s group, later described the terrible conditions. “It was really scary. Smoke was everywhere, and ash (灰) was falling all the time like a dark, dirty snow. It was hard to see clearly,” she said. “But luckily, we had Knull. She was an excellent leader and made sure that everyone was working together. She kept us calm and organized.”
Knull kept in touch with the search team and police all the time to help with the evacuation. She knew the roads well, so she could pick the fastest way. At last, she saved all 16 tourists. No one was seriously hurt.

(25-26八上·山东潍坊·期中)Adam Hamdaqa, a Grade 7 student, used his phone to create an award-winning science project—the Guardian Helmet (守护者头盔).
Adam loves riding his bike, but one day, he fell off and broke his arm. When he was sent to the hospital, his mind raced with many “What if” questions. “What if I was away from home? What if I didn’t wear my helmet? What if I didn’t bring my phone?” he wondered. This accident made him wonder how he could help people in similar situations. Then he had an idea. “What if I make a helmet that could call for help by itself?” he thought.
Adam bought a helmet and started working on it. He put a small sensor (传感器) inside the helmet. The sensor can feel how fast a person is riding and it can sense if they fall. Then he made a phone app. If the sensor feels a hard fall, the app sends a message to someone the rider chooses. Adam chose his mum to call if in need of help. “Mum can come to help right away! She’s my guardian,” Adam said. Besides, this cool helmet protects his head and calls for help if there is an accident. That’s why he named it the Guardian Helmet!
At a big science fair in Montreal, Adam’s project outperformed those of older students, and he won first prize! The judges said his invention was clever and useful. “You shouldn’t use your phone while biking,” he said. “But using a phone app to keep safe? That’s the coolest thing ever!”

After leaving China, I found everything is difficult in my country. The taxi is late and the train is too slow. The worst is that I must take cash with me. In China, I can buy anything anywhere just with a mobile phone, thanks to China’s 5G and Wi-Fi. And there’s nothing special in our botanical garden (植物园), but when I lived in Kunming, I felt like living in a botanical garden.

Last summer vacation, I travelled with my family to the Hawkesbury River in Western Sydney. It was one of the most unforgettable summer vacations in my life.
Staying by the river helps us escape from the hot weather and noise of the city. Every day, my family and I got up early to go swimming in the cool water. In the morning, we all took part in a big game. We enjoyed water skiing, wakeboarding (尾波滑水) and other activities. These activities made our family feel closer.
In the warm afternoon, we peacefully read books on hammocks hung among trees by the river. The days always ended with a campfire. We sat around the fire, talking and laughing.

Passage 1
(25-26八上·山东青岛超银中学-11月·期中)Jasper National Park saw an act of heroism on July 22. Colleen Knull, a kind volunteer firefighter, quickly jumped into action to save people from a wildfire.

Shocked, I found my brother James standing behind me. “Don’t you have a basketball game to watch?” I asked.
“The game was almost over when I found you left. I thought you might like some company (陪伴).”
“Company is the last thing I want. I want to stay alone. I need some quiet time.”
James studied me for a minute. “It’s hard having such a big family, isn’t it?”
“Eliza’s always prying into my life. Yesterday I found her looking through my diary. Now everyone is in the living room watching the game. I wanted to watch a movie, but when I went to my room, Sara was there listening to the radio.”
James sighed (叹气) and said, “I felt the same way when I was your age. But now...”
“Now you have your own room. After Daniel went off to college, you didn’t have to share anymore.”
