2 It all started when Nan worked in Japan. He attended an international meeting on radio science in 1993. Sadly, he found China had no say in the discussion. The largest radio telescope in China was then only 25 metres wide. Nan was greatly shocked. He felt a strong wish to build a larger one. In fact, he wanted to build one of the largest telescopes in the world.

But Nan led the team forward, never giving up until the perfect place was found.
