I went to an island to see puffins, but what I learnt that day had little to do with birds.
My husband and I ____11____ a ferry (渡船) there on a June morning. Rain started right after we left. Strong winds rocked the boat wildly. I felt a little ____12____ while standing on the deck. By the time we reached the island, my fingers were blue. In the Far North, where the puffins live, summer is not always sunny and warm.
We stood under the eaves of a warehouse, hiding ____13____ the June shower, cold and wet. The ferry would not return for hours. Then, a car stopped. A woman in a wool hat got out. “You look ____14____,” she said. “Would you like to come to our house for lunch?”
We followed her to a small yellow house. The ____15____ was full of people, young and old. They made room for us at the table. We ate bread, cheese, and drank hot coffee. Then, we began to chat. The warmth of the room and the smiling faces around us made me feel ____16____ right away.

When it was time to leave, our new friend Sigrid led us to the cliffs. She walked quickly, and we ____18____ close behind. The rain had not stopped, but somehow it seemed ____19____ to us now. As we made our way across the wet grass, she pointed to the cliffs ahead. “They are there,” she said with a smile. ____20____ sat on the wet rocks, waiting. And the puffins did. They flew right toward us, cocking their heads as if ____21____ what we were doing on their island. Their red feet spread out like landing gear. They made us laugh.
____22____ the ferry whistle blew, Sigrid took my hands to say goodbye. “Your hands are so cold!” she said. She took off her mittens and handed them to me. “Take mine,” she said.
It’s been seventeen years, and I still ____23____ those mittens. They are not fancy and bright like the puffin’s beak. But they remind me of the island more than the birds do. I have spent seventeen years trying to be as ____24____ to others as Sigrid was to me that day.

The Two Poles: Similar but Different
The two ends of our Earth have a lot in common—but they’re different in surprising ways!
Both are very cold, with super dark winters and very bright summers. At certain points of the year, there are more than 20 hours a day of darkness or light.
Antarctic (South Pole)
Antarctica is about the size of Australia. It is actually a desert and the driest, coldest continent (大洲). Why? It is far from warm oceans, and it is high above sea level.
The Southern Ocean around Antarctica is full of life. Penguins, white and black birds that can’t fly, are the symbol of Antarctica. In summer, tiny floating algae (藻类) grow very fast. Small shrimplike krill eat the algae. Then many sea animals, from penguins to fish, eat the krill. This is a good example of “food chain” in nature.
Snow builds up year after year. The layers are pressed into glaciers (冰川) and ice sheets.
The Arctic (North Pole)
The Arctic is mostly an icy ocean. For thousands of years, native people have lived by hunting, fishing, and gathering what the land and sea provide.
The Arctic is home to many animals. Some live there all year round, such as polar bears. Many birds fly to the Arctic in spring to raise their young, but not all of them stay for the winter.
Each winter, large parts of the Arctic Ocean freeze with a layer of ice 6 to 10 feet thick. Most ice melts in summer, but the ice closest to the North Pole doesn’t. It keeps growing, reaching 25 feet thick somewhere.
26. What is at the bottom of the food chain in the Southern Ocean?
A. Krill. B. Penguins. C. Algae. D. Fish.
27. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Antarctica is colder and drier than Australia.
B. Penguins fly to Antarctica to raise their young.
C. The ice near the Arctic can reach at most 20 feet.
D. Not all polar bears stay in the Arctic all year round.
28. On which website can you find this passage?
A. www.travelblog.org/culture B. www.chinadaily.com.cn/education
C. www.sciencenews.org/health D. www.nationalgeographic.com/nature

①Weather changes all the time, and so does the technology which is used to forecast (预报) it. Nowadays, AI-powered forecasting models are being developed to make weather predictions faster and more accurate (精准的).
②AI can collect and process more kinds of information than before. In the past, forecasts mainly depended on temperature, wind, and air pressure. Now, AI models can provide information, including city maps, population data, and even electricity usage records. For example, the Hong Kong Observatory uses computer vision, an AI method, to study radar pictures of rain. This helps scientists know the speed and direction of rain clouds.
③However, some weather events are still hard to forecast. Traditional models work well for large systems, such as areas of high or low pressure. But small, local events, like sudden rainstorms or tornadoes, are harder to predict. Reducing the grid (网格) size of a weather model helps. But the large number of processing makes it impossible to use traditional methods.
④Rain predictions near the equator are often less accurate than in other places. One reason is that the difference in tropical rainfall systems affects the predictions. Another reason is that observation systems are not equally good worldwide.
⑤At present, there are many ways to improve forecasts. With AI, weather forecasting is becoming faster, cheaper, and more accurate. For example, Nvidia’s CorrDiff model uses AI to produce more detailed forecasts quickly with less energy. Even the Hong Kong Observatory can make rain forecasts only a few hours ahead.
29. According to Paragraph 2, what information can AI models provide?
a. city maps b. computer vision c. transport data d. electricity usage records
A. ab B. ad C. bc D. cd
30. What makes rain predictions near the equator less accurate?
A. The large number of processing.
B. The equally good observation stations.
C. The smaller grid size of a weather model.
D. The difference in tropical rainfall systems.
31. Why does the writer mention the Hong Kong Observatory twice?
A. To compare two main ways.
B. To list different climate systems.
C. To exchange ideas about forecasts.
D. To give a good example of using AI.
32. According to the chart, which structure of the following is correct? (① — Paragraph…)
A. ①→②→③④→⑤ B. ①②→③→④→⑤
C. ①→②→③→④⑤ D. ①→②③→④→⑤

When I was a child, I often got into fights at school and my grades dropped sharply, so my mother made me come to her workplace after school — the space centre, where she worked in the cafeteria.
One day, an astronaut named Richard saw me struggling with Maths homework. He sat down and helped me. From then on, he and other astronauts often stopped by to help me with my studies. For my 15th birthday, I got a private tour of Mission Control. Standing in that room, filled with screens and maps, I felt a strange excitement. It was amazing!
On June 2nd, a spaceship launched for the Moon. I watched behind the glass of the VIP room.
Everything seemed to be going well. Then, suddenly, we heard a loud bang. A few seconds later, Richard’s voice came over the radio, “Mission Control, we’ve had a problem.” An oxygen tank had exploded, and the situation was very dangerous.
The astronauts, Richard, Fred, and Jack, moved into the lunar module (登月舱) to survive. Back on Earth, Mission Control worked day and night to bring them home safely. I stayed close to the radio at home, listening to every update. The whole world was watching and hoping.
I was so upset that I shared what I saw at the centre with my classmates. Terry, who used to fight with me, didn’t believe what I said. He even laughed at me, “Ramon, are you joking? Those buildings are fake! Don’t you know?” Angrily, I shouted at him, “Go to the centre with me, or you’ll regret.”
Then, Terry followed me to the space centre. He saw the control room, heard the tense voices, and finally understood it was all real. Both of us worried about the safety of the spaceship. Staring at the screens for a long time, we stood still.
Finally, on June 8th, the command module was brought down into the Pacific Ocean. The three astronauts were safe. Influenced by the spirit of science, bravery, and hard work, Terry and I stopped fighting and became good friends.
As for me, I studied harder than ever and became a pilot later. My friend Terry became a flight surgeon. We often joke about how we used to fight. But what I truly learn is that kindness, teamwork, and courage can turn even the biggest disaster into a complete victory.
37. The writer went to the space centre in the beginning because ________.
A. he wanted to see spaceship B. an astronaut invited him there
C. his mother asked him to do so D. Richard would help with his study

c. Ramon and Terry became friends.
d. An accident happened to the spaceship.
e. Ramon told his classmates what he saw at the centre.

As an international student at Nantong University, I was lucky to be part of the special activity — Promoting Jianghai Culture in Nantong. It was an unforgettable experience that connected me deeply with the soul of this amazing city.
The producer announced the public celebration would be on TV on May 8th. In late April, a team came to my university to find students for a special performance. But I was on a study trip in Nanjing then. When I came back, my friends and teachers helped me get a chance to try out. The rehearsal (排练) had already started. Luckily, I didn’t miss it.
At first, we practised in our university. But the choreographer (编舞) kept changing the script. That meant we had to try our dance steps and the song all over again. In the end, it was worth it.
We performed to a new song called China Fun Together. The foreign students were asked to act only the last part. But getting it right in just 10 days was really hard.
The big day got closer. We practised all day at Nantong Theatre, from morning to night. But with only one day left, we faced a sad possibility: If the producers were not satisfied, our performance could be cut from the final show.
As I joined late, I started at the back, but I didn’t give up. I practised every day. Finally, I made it. Just hours before the show, I was moved from the back row to the front.
Since then, I’ve been a storyteller of Jianghai culture, sharing with the world the harmony of this land.
This is more than a memory — it’s my role in building bridges of understanding across cultures.

题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
A
The Two Poles: Similar but Different
【答案】26. C 27. A 28. D
【解析】
【导语】本文是说明文,介绍了地球南极与北极的相似特征,同时从地理属性、生物、冰层特点等方面介绍了二者的不同之处。
【26题详解】
根据文章Antarctic (South Pole)部分的“In summer, tiny floating algae (藻类) grow very fast. Small shrimplike krill eat the algae. Then many sea animals, from penguins to fish, eat the krill.”可推知,南大洋的食物链中藻类是最基础的生产者,处于食物链的最底端。
【27题详解】
根据文章Antarctic (South Pole)部分的“It is actually a desert and the driest, coldest continent (大洲).”
B
A. ①→②→③④→⑤ B. ①②→③→④→⑤
C. ①→②→③→④⑤ D. ①→②③→④→⑤
【答案】29. B 30. D 31. D 32. A
【解析】

【30题详解】
根据文章第4段“One reason is that the difference in tropical rainfall systems affects the predictions.”可知,热带降雨系统的差异会导致赤道附近的降雨预报准确率较低。
【31题详解】
根据文章第2段“For example, the Hong Kong Observatory uses computer vision, an AI method, to study radar pictures of rain.”和第5段“Even the Hong Kong Observatory can make rain forecasts only a few hours ahead.”

请认真阅读下面短文,并根据短文内容回答问题。
