Do you do team projects at school? I do a lot. I enjoy team projects because I like sharing ideas with other people. Of course, team activities aren’t always easy. You need to know how to work well together. Here are some suggestions to make teamwork easier.
1. Know the goals
Make sure everyone understands the goal of the project. If you’re doing a class project, you need to check the teacher’s instructions carefully and ask questions whenever something isn’t clear. There’s a popular saying: If you don’t know where you’re going you probably won’t get there.
2. Assign (分配) roles
Everyone should have a role in the team. For example, there should be a leader who helps everyone make decisions. There might be a note-taker who writes down the team’s ideas during meetings, and a time-keeper to control the time. There might also be a fact-checker or a group speaker.
3. Divide the work
For large projects, the work can be divided into smaller tasks. Then you can choose tasks that you do well or enjoy. Of course, you shouldn’t always do the same task. It’s good to try new things, even if they’re difficult!
4. Make a plan
After you divide the work, write down a plan on paper. You can use a calendar to help you. List all the tasks and think about when each one must be finished. It’s important for everyone to follow the plan. And if you can’t finish your part on time, tell the others as soon as possible.
Try to be positive. Everything is easier when you’re enjoying yourself in the team.

This autumn, Uncle Li in Henan was happy because his corn field looked good. He planted 10 acres (英亩) of corn, and the corn had big ears. He hoped to get much corn to feed his family and pay for his son’s school. But in early September, it rained a lot, and everything changed.
The rain lasted for nearly three weeks without stopping. The farmland turned into a muddy (泥泞的) mess, and the soil was completely waterlogged (涝的). The corn stalks (玉米秆), weakened by the endless rain, fell over in the wind, with their ears covered in thick mud. Uncle Li’s large combine harvester (大型联合收割机) , which he usually depended on for fast harvesting, couldn’t be used—its heavy wheels (轮子) would get stuck deep in the soft mud, possibly damaging the machine. He had no choice but to harvest the corn by hand, a tiring job he hadn’t done for years.
Every morning, Uncle Li put on his rain boots and walked through the mud to the field. The mud stuck to his boots, so it was hard to walk. He pulled the corn ears off one by one. His hands got sore and dirty, and by evening, he was all wet. But he only finished a little part of the field each day. Worse, some corn started to go moldy because of the wet weather. Uncle Li was worried that his hard work would be wasted.
Just when he wanted to give up, his neighbors came to help. They brought their tools and a small harvester that could work in mud. They took turns working from morning to evening. When the rain stopped, they dried the corn under cloths to stop mold.
After ten days of hard work, they finished harvesting all the corn. About fifteen percent of the corn was lost to mold, but most was saved. Uncle Li smiled and said, “The rain was bad, but we helped each other and won.” He learned that working together can solve big problems.
6. What did Uncle Li hope for the corn harvest?
A. To buy a new harvester. B. To feed his family and pay his son’s school fees.
C. To give corn to his friends. D. To plant more corn next year.
7. Why was the large combine harvester useless in the rainy weather?
A. It was not waterproof (防水的) and got broken by the rain.
B. The fallen corn stalks blocked (阻止) the machine’s operation.
C. The waterlogged soil would trap the machine’s heavy wheels.
D. Uncle Li didn’t have enough fuel to run the machine.
8. What does the underlined word “moldy” mean?
A. 发霉的 B. 甜甜的 C. 新鲜的 D. 小小的
9. How much corn was saved?
A. About 15% B. About 50% C. About 85% D. About 100%
10. Which of the following is the best title for the passage?
A. A Terrible Rain in Henan B. Uncle Li’s Cornfield
C. Harvesting Corn by Hand D. Teamwork Beats Rainy Harvest Troubles
C
Do you know there are sounds produced by plants? Have you ever wondered what animals are talking about? With the development of AI, we may be able to understand their languages. In Professor Karen Bakker’s new book, The Sounds of Life: How-Digital Technology Is Bringing Us Closer to the Worlds of Animals and Plants, she talks about how AI and other technologies are helping us translate and understand animals’ and plants’ words.
All around the animal world, there are sounds that we can hardly pick up and decipher (破译). Elephants, for example, talk with each other using infra-sound (次声), which cannot be heard by human ears. Coral (珊瑚) in the ocean also sends sound waves to lead baby coral to safer areas to grow. Baby coral “listens” for the sounds and finds its way to the right place. This is surprising as coral doesn’t have any ears! Scientists have placed machines into these environments to pick up the sounds humans cannot hear.
After the sounds are recorded, AI can study their meaning. For example, Israeli researchers used AI to translate bats’ (蝙蝠) 15,000 calls. They found that more than 60 percent were arguments about such things: food, ways of sleeping, getting into personal space and unwanted courtship (求偶).
Technologies can not only understand the animals but communicate back to them. For example, bees use dances to communicate. So a research team in Germany put the bee language AI system into a robot bee. They asked the robot to create a set of dance moves to tell the bees where they can find their food.
Researchers said the technology could someday help disabled people to communicate. It might also help scientists understand how animals see the world.
11. What can we learn from Karen Bakker’s new book?
A. What role AI plays in protecting animals.
B. What makes it hard for us to take care of plants.
C. How animals and plants communicate with the help of AI.
D. How technologies help us understand the voices of nature.
12. What do elephants and coral have in common?
A. Their languages can be easily understood by the robots.
B. They make special calls to discuss matters like ways of sleeping.
C. Humans cannot pick up the sounds they make for communication.
D. They can pick up infra-sound which is sent by the special machines.
13. Why is the example of bats mentioned?
A. To tell readers that bats are clever animals.
B. To list the kinds of arguments animals usually have.
C. To describe the difference between animals and plants.
D. To show what AI can do with the sounds scientists collected.
14. How did the German team communicate with bees?
A. With a robot bee’s dance moves. B. By talking to bees.
C. By playing music to bees. D. By giving bees food directly.
15. What is the researchers’ attitude (态度) towards the future of the AI technology?
A. Unclear. B. Hopeless. C. Doubtful. D. Supportive.
D
In my opinion, the wheel (轮子) is the most important thing that human beings have ever invented. It might seem strange to say that something so simple-looking and so common could be so important. ____16____
Firstly, wheels influence almost every part of our lives. Wheels are used, for example, in clocks, machines and cars. If you visit just one factory, you will see how important wheels are. ____17____
Secondly, wheels play a great part in food production. Wheels are used to grind (磨碎) different kinds of corn into flour (面粉). ____18____ We also need wheels to transport (运输) the wheat (小麦). If we did not have the wheel, we would have much difficulty in food production.
Thirdly, our world would be completely different if we did not have the wheel for transport. Before the wheel was invented, people used to have to travel on foot or by riding on an animal. They didn't know where to put their heavy bags. ____19____ That is what we would be doing now if we did not have the wheel. Everything would take longer to do.
We would be back to the Stone Age if the clever ancient people had not invented the wheel. Our modern world would simply be impossible. ____20____
A. It took long to finish their journeys.
B. You will see wheels on almost every machine.
C. The wheel is surely the most important invention of all time.
D. They are then used to mix flour and other foods into bread.
E. But if you consider the following points, you will probably agree with me.

A. Unclear. B. Hopeless. C. Doubtful. D. Supportive.
【答案】11. D 12. C 13. D 14. A 15. D
