Think necessity is the mother of invention? Not always. There is a very thin line between brilliant innovation and absolute failure, as some of the inventors famously found out.
Some of the most popular products we use today were accidents found by scientists — cooks who spilled things, and misguided inventors who — in the case of the glue used on Post-it notes — were trying to create the opposite of what they ended up with. But we can all take comfort in knowing even some huge mistakes can come with great ideas. And sometimes, even forgetting to wash your hands has its advantages.
You know how when you’re done with a Post-it note, you throw it in the wastebasket? Yeah, that was pretty much what Spencer Silver almost did when he was trying to develop a super strong adhesive (粘合剂) for 3M labs in 1968 and failed to find any wise way. Instead, he had invented the opposite: an adhesive that stuck to objects but could be easily lifted off.
Silver marketed the possible uses of his new, sort-of-weak glue around 3M for years, all to deaf ears. Finally, a colleague named Art Fry attended one of Silver’s seminars (研讨会) in 1974 (3M has long been known for encouraging employees to step outside of their own departments to see what people in other areas of the company are doing). Fry saw a use where no one else did: holding his page in his book, which his bookmarks kept falling out of. And when you added Silver’s mild adhesive to paper bookmarks, a first Post-it note was born. Not to let you think this is just silly company legend, even the Web fact-checker Snopes.com gave this a “True” rating.
3M finally agreed to distribute the Post-it notes nationwide in 1980, a decade after Silver had first happened to find the use. Forty years later, they’d be as important to the American office as the stapler (订书器) and the fax machine.
24. Silver invented Post-it notes when he ______.
A. attended a seminar B. put his bookmark in his book
C. talked to his colleague Art Fry D. tried to invent a super strong adhesive
25. Why did Art Fry go to Silver’s seminar?
A. To borrow a Post-it note. B. To see what Silver was doing.
C. To help market Silver’s mild glue. D. To find out the use of Silver’s glue.
26. What can we learn from the text?
A. Silver’s Post-it note was accepted as soon as it was invented.
B. Art Fry made Silver’s invention popular around America.
C. Post-it notes are not widely used in the American office.
D. Silver was not a man to give up easily.
27. What can be the best title for the text?
A. Wonderful Inventions Made by Mistake B. Big Inventors, Small Inventions
C. Inspiration and Inventions D. A Great Inventor
D 25. B 26. D 27. A
根据第三段中的“Yeah, that was pretty much what Spencer Silver almost did when he was trying to develop a super strong adhesive (粘合剂) for 3M labs in 1968 and failed to find any wise way. Instead, he had invented the opposite: an adhesive that stuck to objects but could be easily lifted off.(是的,斯宾塞·西尔弗当年差点就那么干了。1968年,他在3M实验室试图研发一种超强粘合剂,却没能找到合适的办法。但他反倒研发出了截然相反的东西:一种可以粘在物体上,却又能轻松撕下来的粘合剂。)”可知,西尔弗是在尝试发明超强粘合剂的过程中意外研发出了便利贴的核心粘合剂。
【25题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段中的“3M has long been known for encouraging employees to step outside of their own departments to see what people in other areas of the company are doing(3M长期以来以鼓励员工跨部门了解公司其他领域人员的工作内容而闻名)”可知,亚特·弗莱参加西尔弗的研讨会,是为了了解西尔弗的研究内容、查看公司其他部门的工作内容。
根据第四段中的“Silver marketed the possible uses of his new, sort-of-weak glue around 3M for years, all to deaf ears.(多年来,西尔弗一直在3M公司内部推广这种新型弱粘性胶水的潜在用途,却始终无人理睬。)”
的设问开篇,点明杰出的创新与彻底的失败之间只有一线之隔,为全文做好背景铺垫;本文的主旨句是第二段中的“Some of the most popular products we use today were accidents found by scientists — cooks who spilled things, and misguided inventors who — in the case of the glue used on Post-it notes — were trying to create the opposite of what they ended up with.(如今我们使用的一些最受欢迎的产品,都源自科学家的意外发现——有打翻东西的厨师,还有方向出现偏差的发明家。便利贴所用胶水的例子就是如此:发明者原本想要研发的东西,和最终得到的成品截然相反。)”,后文围绕“偶然失误催生伟大发明”这一核心展开,以便利贴的发明故事作为具体例证。选项A表示“失误催生的绝妙发明”,精准涵盖了本文的核心主题,适合作为本文标题。
C
Many people confuse hard-working people with workaholics (工作狂). What are some characteristics of workaholics? How could a person tell that he/she is a workaholic? A workaholic works long hours, at the expense of personal relationships and health. When not working, they’re thinking about work. Work influences their mood: When work is going well, they’re up; when work is going less well, they’re down.
Working, or simply being busy, can be a hard habit to break. When workaholics aren’t busy working — or doing something to promote their work — they feel anxious and guilty. They hang onto jobs for dear life and do everything they can to ensure they’re essential.
There is a link between health problems and workaholism. Just because work itself is a respectable pursuit (追求) doesn’t mean that an addiction to it is any less damaging than other sorts of addictions. A number of studies show that workaholism has been associated with a wide range of health problems, such as anxiety and heart disease.
Besides health problems, being a workaholic brings other negative effects as well. A study published in the American Journal of Family Therapy found that working too much negatively influenced an employee’s marriage. This isn’t surprising, since if you’re married to your work it can be difficult to be married to anything, or anyone, else. There have also been studies looking at the influence of workaholic parents on their children and the news isn’t good. Adult children of workaholic fathers experienced more depression and anxiety and a weaker sense of self.
However, there are also many positive aspects to working hard and to an increasing devotion to career. Hard work can bring great rewards. For many, it’s how they develop feelings of self-worth and confidence and purpose. If you have a workaholic in your life you might point out the things he or she is missing out on while at work, whether it’s a child’s soccer game, a good book, or a yoga class. Seek to understand why the person feels the need to work so much and support them in finding a resolution.
28. What can we learn from the text?
A. Work has stronger effects on workaholics than on others.
B. Hard-working people enjoy better health than other people do.
C. Workaholics work to build better relationships.
D. Workaholics care more about their health than others do.
29. When workaholics are not busy working, what will happen to them?
A. They will promote their work.
B. They will form a bad habit easily.
C. They will feel uneasy and unsafe.
D. They will have a chance to prove their own value.
30. What are paragraphs 3 and 4 mainly about?
A. Bad influences of workaholism.
B. Different patterns of workaholics.
C. How people deal with their addictions.
D. How hard-working people differ from workaholics.
31. What is the author’s attitude towards working hard?
A. Doubtful. B. Objective. C. Negative. D. Curious.
A 29. C 30. A 31. B
根据第一段中“A workaholic works long hours, at the expense of personal relationships and health. When not working, they’re thinking about work. Work influences their mood: When work is going well, they’re up; when work is going less well, they’re down. (工作狂长时间工作,不惜牺牲人际关系与健康。不工作的时候,他们也在想着工作。工作影响他们的情绪:工作顺利时,他们情绪高涨;工作不顺时,情绪低落)”可知,工作对工作狂造成的影响比对其他人更大。
【29题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中“When workaholics aren’t busy working — or doing something to promote their work — they feel anxious and guilty. (当工作狂不忙于工作或者做一些推进工作的事情时,他们会感到焦虑和内疚)”可知,工作狂不忙于工作时,会感到不安。
【30题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第三段中“There is a link between health problems and workaholism. (健康问题和工作成瘾之间存在关联)”以及第四段中“Besides health problems, being a workaholic brings other negative effects as well. (除健康问题外,成为工作狂还会带来其他负面影响)”可知,两段从健康、婚姻、家庭等角度阐述工作成瘾带来的各类不良影响。
【31题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三、四段介绍工作狂的种种危害,以及第五段中“However, there are also many positive aspects to working hard and to an increasing devotion to career. Hard work can bring great rewards. (然而,努力工作以及对事业日益投入也存在许多积极方面。努力工作可以带来丰厚回报)”可知,作者既阐述工作成瘾的弊端,又肯定努力工作的价值,没有片面否定或肯定,对努力工作持客观态度。
D
Next time you raise an eyebrow at the views of your partner, friend, brother, sister or colleague, remember they could be helping to make you smarter. New research shows that intelligence is not fixed but can be improved throughout adulthood by family members, bright mates and intellectually challenging careers. The study challenges the commonly held belief that intelligence is fixed by the age of about 18.
Scientific consensus (共识) suggests intelligence is controlled by genes, with environmental factors (因素) such as schooling and nutrition playing a part up to this age. After this point, IQ scores become steady. But James Flynn, professor at the University of Otago in New Zealand, argues that people can “upgrade” their intelligence throughout their lives. He believes intellectual stimulation (刺激) from other people is important as the “brain seems to be rather like a muscle — the more you use it, the stronger it gets”. However, the opposite is also true — so people who share a home or workplace with the intellectually challenged risk seeing their IQ levels nosedive as a result.
Professor Flynn analyzed US intelligence tests from the last 65 years and created new IQ “age tables”. He found a bright ten-year-old with brothers and sisters of average intelligence will suffer a five to ten point IQ disadvantage compared to a similar child with equally bright brothers and sisters. However, children with a low IQ could gain six to eight points by having brighter brothers and sisters and special educational treatment to help pull them up.
Professor Flynn concluded that although genetics and early life experiences determine about 80% of intelligence, the remaining 20% is linked to lifestyle. This means people can raise their IQ, or allow it to fall, by ten points or more. He suggests the best way to improve IQ levels is to socialize with bright friends, and find an intellectually challenging job.
32. According to the text, what is commonly believed?
A. People’s IQ levels fall as they age.
B. It is wise to share family members’ views.
C. People cannot improve their intelligence during adulthood.
D. Doing something challenging is good for one’s intelligence.
33. What does the underlined word “nosedive” in paragraph 2 most probably mean?
A. Vary. B. Develop. C. Change. D. Fall.
34. Which of the following can help improve one’s intelligence according to Professor Flynn?
A. Making many friends. B. Staying with smart people.
C. Doing exercise every day. D. Learning from brothers or sisters.
35. What is the purpose of the text?
A. To inform. B. To advertise. C. To entertain. D. To persuade.
C 33. D 34. B 35. A
根据第一段中“The study challenges the commonly held belief that intelligence is fixed by the age of about 18. (这项研究挑战了人们普遍持有的观点:智力在18岁左右就定型了)”可知,大众普遍认为人成年之后无法提升智力。
【33题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第二段中“He believes intellectual stimulation from other people is important as the “brain seems to be rather like a muscle — the more you use it, the stronger it gets”. However, the opposite is also true — so people who share a home or workplace with the intellectually challenged risk seeing their IQ levels nosedive as a result. (他认为来自他人的智力刺激十分重要,“大脑就像肌肉,用得越多就越强”。然而反之亦然,所以和智力水平不高的人共同生活、工作的人,其智商水平有nosedive的风险)”可知,前文提到大脑越用越强,而However后表达相反的情况,由此可推断nosedive意为“下降”。
【34题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段中“He suggests the best way to improve IQ levels is to socialize with bright friends, and find an intellectually challenging job. (他提出提升智商最好的方式是和聪明的朋友交往,找一份有智力挑战的工作)”可知,和聪明人相处有助于提升智力。
【35题详解】
推理判断题。根据第一段中“New research shows that intelligence is not fixed but can be improved throughout adulthood by family members, bright mates and intellectually challenging careers. (一项新研究表明,智力并非固定不变,在整个成年阶段,智力可以在家人、聪慧的同伴以及具有智力挑战的工作的影响下得到提升)”以及后文内容可知,本文介绍一项关于智力的新研究,向读者陈述智力可以在成年后改变的相关发现,写作目的是告知读者这一研究信息。

Sense of well-being: We have a sense of well-being when we are healthy and happy. ____39____That is why flying to a new environment and time zone often causes a disruption in our sense of well-being.
For thousands of years, people didn’t experience disruption in their sense of time and place because there were no rapid means of transportation._____40_____ However, although we can travel by plane now, our bodies have not yet adapted to long-distance air travel. That is why we suffer the jet lag.

D选项(长途旅行后进入到一个新的时区就会引起时差反应)中的jet lag与首段中心词呼应,其中的traveling a long distance与下句中的The travel time呼应,故选D。
E选项(这种感觉与我们的空间感、时间感紧密相关)中的this与上句中的a sense of wellbeing形成指代关系,其中的place and time与下句中的a new environment and time zone呼应。
The invention of the airplane(飞机的发明)与下句中的although we can travel by plane now(尽管现在我们可以坐飞机旅行)前后呼应。故选A。

A. Doubtful. B. Objective. C. Negative. D. Curious.

Our trip is on thursday, so I would like the homework on wednesday. The trip is nine pounds, and if you haven't paid yet, you must bring your money to school tomorrow. If you want to bring some money to spend, you can, but not more than five pounds. We get to the zoo at about eleven o'clock later on. We're going on a special tour with a zoo guide. So everyone needs to be at the entrance at twelve thirty. For the start of that, the guide will take us to the zoo information center before taking us to the insect tows. Now remember, you mustn't feed the zoo animals, but of course you can watch workers giving them something to eat. The lions get their food at three o'clock, and the elephants are given theirs at four. There's a zoo shop. You can buy postcards and toys there if you want. There's also a coffee where you can get some sandwiches. Before our trip to west park zoo, i'd like you to write something for homework about a wild animal.
