B. Buildings around us
Lu Yao and Lin Dong are talking about different types of buildings they are
interested in.
Listen to their conversation and note down what
kinds of buildings are mentioned.
Listen, read and think
Tall buildings today and low buildings in the past.
Speaking
Lin Dong: Look! The CBD (Central Business District) office buildings in this picture are tall and so cool. They are located in the city centre. We can see them from miles away.
Lu Yao: Tall buildings show our progress in technology and design. They are built of steel and new materials. I know you are a fan of tall buildings. Do you think taller buildings are better?
/ˈdɪstrɪkt/ n.
行政区、区域
/ˈprəʊɡres/ n.
进步、前进
Speaking
Lin Dong: Well, maybe. Every few years, the record for the highest building in the world is broken. But it is a pity that buildings cannot be as high as we’d like. There must be a limit.
Lu Yao: Tall buildings have pros and cons. But in the past, low buildings were also wonderful for living and working in. Some were constructed in very unique ways, and they looked so beautiful! Also it was easy to get in and out.
/ˈpɪti/ n.

/ˈlɪmɪt/ n. 限制、界限
Speaking
Lin Dong: Yes, you’re right. But I’m sorry to say some of them were put down or not well kept.

Yes, its style combines modern design with classic Suzhou garden features. I love the white walls and dark grey roofs — they remind me of traditional houses in the south.
But the roof has glass pyramids! And there are large windows and skylights. That feels very modern and creative.
Look at this picture of Suzhou Museum. It looks so different from the old Chinese buildings we usually see.

I think so. It keeps the beauty of traditional gardens but adds modern comfort. Also, the glass pyramids make the building stand out and look very artistic.
Exactly. The materials are glass and concrete, which are strong and let in plenty of natural light. That makes the inside bright and pleasant for visitors.
Do you think this mix of old and new works well?

Work in pairs and use B1 and the pictures below for reference.
True. It’s probably easier to build and maintain with concrete and glass. But I still like the wooden feel of older buildings — they seem warmer.
I agree. But this museum shows that we can respect history while using new materials. That’s what attracts me most — it’s both clever and beautiful.

That’s right. They’re made of brick and concrete, I think. Nothing special, but they feel solid and strong.
Update my to-do list
Work in pairs. Describe your school buildings.
How do you feel about them?
Yes, they are very traditional — just simple rectangular blocks. I heard they were built around 1992.
Look at our school buildings. They’re not as fancy as the Suzhou Museum, but they have their own style.
Lily
Mike
Do you like them? Some people say they look old and boring.
Well, they are plain, but I feel safe and comfortable here. The classrooms are big and get enough sunlight. Also, the layout is very practical — it’s easy to find your way around.

Lily
Mike
That’s true. But compared to modern buildings with glass walls or curved shapes, ours seem a bit dated. I wish we had more creative designs.
Maybe, but these buildings have been here for over 30 years. They’ve seen many students come and go. That gives them a kind of history and warmth, don’t you think?
