It was my first day as an English teacher at a Chinese school. The hot weather was very different from that in the UK. I asked a teacher where I could get water. She kindly led me to a machine. As I pressed the button, I felt the warm water fill my bottle. Confused (困惑的), I looked at her and said, “Sorry, I meant the cold water.” She smiled and said, “We only have hot water here.” This was my first experience of culture shock (冲击).
Culture shock happens when you move to a new country. However, no one talked about the “reverse (反向的) culture shock” to me.
I stayed in China for three years. During my time in China, I got used to the life there. When travelling around China, I would always choose to travel by train. The trains always arrived on time, and the QR code systems made sure the journey would be easy and efficient.
However, when I returned to my hometown, ▲ . When I arrived in the UK, I tried to take a train, but there were many delays (延误). When eating out in restaurants in the UK, I was surprised to find myself missing Chinese dishes. That’s when I started to feel “reverse culture shock”.

We all make mistakes in our daily lives. For example, we may break a classmate’s favourite cup by accident. Or we may say something impolite when arguing with a friend. In such situations, it’s important to know how to say sorry and repair the relationship in time. But how do you make sure your apology (道歉) sounds sincere? Well, a recent finding shows that people are more willing to accept apologies including more words.
Not long ago, Shiri Lev-Ari, a professor from the University of London, did two studies about making apologies. In the first one, she searched for 50 apologetic posts online. Then she compared (比较) these posts to normal posts written by the same people. She found that their apologetic posts were far longer than the normal ones. However, the words used in apologies were as common as those in the other posts. They weren’t unusual or difficult to understand.
In the second study, Lev-Ari asked 49 volunteers to read three different versions (说法) of the same apologetic sentence. The three versions conveyed the same meaning, but they differed in length (长度). The volunteers all agreed the longest sentence sounded the most apologetic.
“An apology seems to be more sincere if it takes more effort to say it. When you use more words, it looks like you’ve put more thought into the apology,” said Lev-Ari.
In future studies, Lev-Ari hopes to find if using big words will help. She also wonders whether saying sorry face-to-face is better than sending an apologetic message. For now, a sincere apology with enough words is a good way to say sorry.
( ) 27. How does the writer start the passage?
A. By asking questions. B. By using sayings.
C. By giving examples. D. By offering numbers.
( ) 28. What do we know about the two studies?
A. A professor from a British university did them.
B. They are about people’s opinions on apologies.
C. Fifty volunteers took part in the second study.
D. The first study shows making apologies online is useless.
( ) 29. The underlined word “conveyed” probably means “______”.
A. changed B. expressed C. avoided D. doubted
( ) 30. What is the best title for the passage?
A. The power of simple words
B. The importance of saying sorry
C. Making apologies — the sooner, the better
D. More words, more sincerity in “sorry”

As a teacher from the US, when I arrived in China to teach, I didn’t expect (预料) to come home with so much tea. One student gave me tea that her parents mailed from Zhejiang, and another student handed me tea from her hometown in Henan. They didn’t do this for better grades. These were simply thanks from the bottom of their hearts.
Some of the most unforgettable moments during my stay in China happened with a teacup in the hand. In Chengdu, I joined two students for tea at Daci Temple. When they prepared the tea, they poured away the first round of tea. That confused me, because it looked like perfectly good tea to me. When I asked why, they said it was what their parents and grandparents did. For them, this habit was more about continuing a family tradition than about cleanliness or taste. In Beijing, a friend invited me to a traditional teahouse. Over a cup of tea, we chatted for a long time about life, family, travel and dreams. In this busy world, tea acts as a language of friendship and offers people a chance to slow down, talk face-to-face, and truly listen to each other.
In all these moments, I realized that tea is more than a drink in China. In the West, we usually see tea as something that gives us energy or helps us calm down. Yet in China, tea carries respect, history, and warmth. It allows people to get connected. When Chinese people offer you tea, they’re sharing a part of their world. To accept it is to take a step closer to understanding the heart of Chinese culture.
( ) 31. Why did the students give the writer tea?
A. To ask for help. B. To get better grades.
C. To express their thanks. D. To spread Chinese tea culture.
( ) 32. What does the underlined word “confused” probably mean?
A. 使生气 B. 使人迷 C. 使烦恼 D. 使困惑
( ) 33. Why did the two students pour away the first round of tea?
A. To make the tea cleaner. B. To improve the tea’s taste.
C. To follow a family tradition. D. To show respect for the writer.
( ) 34. How does the writer support his idea that “tea is more than a drink in China”?
A. By telling the history of tea in China.
B. By describing his experiences with tea.
C. By listing the good effects of tea on health.
D. By introducing different traditional teahouses.
( ) 35. What is the main difference between tea in the West and in China?
A. The price of tea. B. The way of making tea.
C. The meanings behind tea. D. The time people drink tea.
