Passage 1
(25-26高二上·湖北省级示范高中·期中)Beat the Heat with Innovative AC Alternatives
This summer, most of the US had really hot weather for a long time. AC is a must when it’s this hot, but it makes power grid work too hard. Also, AC uses refrigerants. Those are greenhouse gases that trap more heat than carbon dioxide. Here are 7 simple alternatives to AC:
1. Quick fixes: Close south-facing windows during the day to keep heat out, then open them at night. Fans cool you by drying sweat — ceiling fans work best. For the long run, plant trees.
2. Cook outside: Use a portable barbecue. Cooking inside is a big heat source for your home.
3. New tech: Evaporative coolers: Good for dry areas, and use only 1/4 the energy of AC.
4. Heat pumps: Cool in summer and warm in winter. They cut home energy use by half, and over 30 countries have subsidies for them. Some use water or underground pipes (geothermal) to work better.
5. Green roofs: Have plants on top, which cool via water evaporation — but need stronger roofs to hold them.
6. Cool roofs: Just painted white. They reflect 90% of heat, like how Greece paints buildings white in summer.
7. Building design: Look at old-style homes in hot places; Windcatchers (they catch cool air); Materials like bricks or stone (hold heat well); Shady central yards.
Experts stress AC should be a last resort, not a first choice.
1.What is the main difference between evaporative coolers and heat pumps according to the text?
A. Evaporative coolers work in all climates, while heat pumps only suit dry areas.
B. Evaporative coolers only cool, while heat pumps can both cool and warm.
C. Evaporative coolers need subsidies, while heat pumps are fully free.
D. Evaporative coolers use geothermal energy while heat pumps rely on sweat evaporation.
2.Which of the following statements about roof cooling methods is true?
A. Green roofs can be used on any roof without extra preparation.
B. Cool roofs cool buildings by absorbing most thermal energy.
C. Green roofs demand more solid roofs to sustain the plants on them.
D. Cool roofs are more expensive to build than green roofs.
3.Where is this text most likely taken from?
A. A novel about US summer life.
B. A science textbook on greenhouse gases.
C. A family life magazine with useful life tips.
D. A weather report predicting US extreme heat.
【答案】1. B 2. C 3. C
根据文章New tech部分中 “Evaporative coolers: Good for dry areas, and use only 1/4 the energy of AC. (蒸发式冷却器:适用于干燥地区,耗电量仅为空调的1/4。)”以及Heat pumps 部分中“Heat pumps: Cool in summer and warm in winter. They cut home energy use by half,(热泵:夏天制冷,冬天制热。它们将家庭能源消耗减半,)”可知,通过对比两者的功能描述,可以看出蒸发式冷却器仅用于制冷,而热泵既可以制冷也可以制热。因此,选项B“Evaporative coolers only cool, while heat pumps can both cool and warm. (蒸发式冷却器只制冷,而热泵既能制冷又能制热。)”符合题意。故选B项。
(2)题解析:
细节理解题。根据文章中Green roofs部分“Have plants on top, which cool via water evaporation — but need stronger roofs to hold them. (屋顶上有植物,通过水蒸发来降温,但需要更坚固的屋顶来支撑它们。)”以及Cool roofs部分“Just painted white. They reflect 90% of heat, like how Greece paints buildings white in summer. (只需刷成白色。它们能反射 90%的热量,就像希腊人在夏天给建筑物刷成白色那样。)”可知,绿色屋顶需要更坚固的屋顶来支撑植物,而凉爽屋顶则是通过反射热量来降温。因此,选项C“Green roofs demand more solid roofs to sustain the plants on them. (绿色屋顶需要更坚固的屋顶来支撑上面的植物。)”符合题意。故选C项。
(3)题解析:
推理判断题。通读全文,文章主要介绍了七种替代空调的简单方法,包括快速修复措施、户外烹饪、新技术应用、热泵、绿色屋顶、凉爽屋顶以及建筑设计等方面的建议。这些内容更偏向于提供实用的生活小贴士,而非科学理论或天气预报。因此,选项C“A family life magazine with useful life tips. (一本提供实用生活小贴士的家庭生活杂志。)”是最可能的出处。故选C项。

The lighthouse was built in 1912 and is a historical site in the area. There are even virtual historical tours you can take.

Victoria, the capital city of British Columbia, was founded in 1843 and is a hub of Canadian history. While in the heart of the city, explore Bastion Square (shops, restaurants, and bars galore), take a walk through Fan Tan Alley, which lays claim to being Canada’s narrowest street, or take a tour!

Passage 2
(25-26高二上·浙江七彩阳光·期中)Anti-inflammatory (抗炎的) foods to eat to reduce pain
Foods you eat can play a powerful role in reducing inflammation. Research shows that daily foods are loaded with natural compounds (化合物) that help ease pain, protect against disease, and keep your body running smoothly. Here are some of the inflammation-fighting foods worth adding to your plate.
Dark chocolate
Yes, you read that correctly. Dark chocolate contains chemicals and anti-oxidants (抗氧化物) that help fight inflammation. According to a large Italian study, people who ate about one square of dark chocolate every three days had significantly lower measures of a protein associated with inflammation than those who ate no chocolate at all.
Green and black tea
Tea is rich in anti-oxidants called flavonoids, which may help protect cells from damage that can worsen conditions like arthritis (关节炎). It also contains compounds that fight inflammation, making green tea a great choice to your morning coffee. Both green and black teas come from the same plant — the differences are in where they’re grown and how they’ re processed.
Soy protein
Research has shown that people with arthritis, especially men, who consumed 40 grams of soy protein per day for three months experienced less pain and improved mobility compared with those who didn’t. While it’s difficult to get that much soy protein from food alone, adding a serving of soybeans, tofu, or soy milk is still worthwhile.
Avocados
Although the window for perfect ripeness is small, avocados are highly recommended — they’re packed with nutrients. Compounds such as carotenoids and tocopherols help fight inflammation and may even lower cancer risk. Interestingly, research suggests that the healthiest part of an avocado is often the part that gets deserted.
1.What will be the result of eating dark chocolate?
A. It makes you get fatter and fatter.
B. The more you eat it, the better.
C. It can help build bones and muscles.
D. A certain regular amount is beneficial.
2.If you feel less mobile, which food is advisable?
A. Dark chocolate.
B. Green and black tea.
C. Soy protein.
D. Avocados.
3.What do green tea and avocados have in common?
A. Both are difficult to grow and ripen in gardens.
B. Both contain chemicals that can fight inflammation.
C. Without them, people would get sick more easily.
D. Both of their best part is unwisely thrown away.
【答案】1. D 2. C 3. B

(25-26高二上·湖北省级示范高中教育教学改革联盟·期中)China’s Pristine Paradises: National Parks and Nature Reserves
China boasts amazing biodiversity and breathtaking landscapes, with a network of protected areas safeguarding its natural heritage. Among these, four sites stand out for ecological significance and scenery, serving as wildlife reserves and symbols of China’s conservation commitment.
● Jiuzhaigou National Park, in Sichuan’s Minshan Mountains, is famous for crystal-clear alpine lakes and vibrant autumn foliage. Its sky-blued lakes, fed by glaciers and springs, reflect snow-capped peaks. A 1992 UNESCO World Heritage Site, it habitats giant pandas, supporting over 2,000 plant and 400 animal species. In 2017, a magnitude 7.0 earthquake damaged its landscapes, but careful restoration revived most of its original charm.
● Sanjiangyuan National Nature Reserve, on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, is called the “Water Tower of Asia”. As the source of the Yangtze, Yellow and Lancang (Mekong) rivers, it supplies water to nearly half of China’s population and millions in Southeast Asia. Spanning 318,000 square kilometers, it homes Tibetan antelopes. Climate change causes glacial retreat, leading to adaptive measures like grassland enclosures.
● Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park, on Hainan Island, is China’s only tropical rainforest protected area. Covering 4,400 square kilometers, it has over 5,000 plant species (15% native) and 340 bird species, including the critically endangered Hainan gibbon (长臂猿) (around 37 left). The rainforest resists typhoons, regulating the island’s climate. Recent years have seen community-involved conservation, with locals shifting from logging to eco-tourism for income and less ecosystem impact.
● Wuyi Mountain National Park, across Fujian and Jiangxi, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site for both natural and cultural value. Its steep (崎岖的) Danxia landforms (red sandstone peaks) pair with thick forests housing Chinese giant salamanders (火蜥蜴). It also has ancient tea plantations and Han Dynasty archaeological sites. A visitor quota system limits daily entries to balance conservation and tourism.
These four areas show China’s holistic (整体的) conservation approach — combining strict protection, sustainable development and public education. As China expands its national park system, they remain beacons of human-nature harmony.
1.Which of the following is a challenge that Jiuzhaigou National Park has overcome?
A. A decline in the number of giant pandas.
B. Overcrowding from excessive tourism.
C. Severe damage caused by an earthquake.
D. Pollution of its crystal-clear alpine lakes.
2.What makes Sanjiangyuan National Nature Reserve crucial to millions of people?
A. Its unique grasslands and wetlands.
B. Its function as the source of three major rivers.
C. Its role as a habitat for the Tibetan antelope.
D. Its strict measures against climate change.
3.What do the last two national parks have in common?
A. Both are home to the world’s rarest primates (灵长目动物).
B. Both have carried out visitor quota systems.
C. Both are located on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.
D. Both combine natural value with cultural significance.
【答案】1. C 2. B 3. D

The HydraSenseTM System monitors your daily water intake in real time (connecting to your phone via Bluetooth) and keeps liquids cold for 24 hours or hot for 12 — plus it sends a soft LED reminder when it’s time to sip, so you never miss a drink.
Exclusive Offer
Buy one, get a FREE Hydration Tracker Band We’ll give you a high-quality HydraSmart® Activity Band (a $39.99 value) absolutely free — perfect for pairing with your bottle to track steps and hydration together.

Fairmont Empress
Fairmont Empress opened its doors in 1908 and has been an elegant staple (贸易中心) in the downtown core since day one. It remains one of the top hotels in Victoria. That means it isn’t exactly budget-friendly, so if you’d prefer to skip the tea and just stop into the hotel for a drink another time of day, that’s welcome too!
Castles
Craigdarroch Castle was built in 1890 by coal baron (大亨) Robert Dunsmuir. The stunning Victorian building features stained-glass windows, beautiful woodwork, and great views of the area. Another castle on Vancouver Island is Hatley Castle, which was built in 1908 and the grounds feature over 15 kilometers of walking trails, a First Nations historical site, and a bird preserve.
Sheringham Point Lighthouse
Located on the south-western coast of Vancouver Island, halfway between Victoria and Port Renfrew, Sheringham Point Lighthouse is a great contrast to the crashing waves below and is one of the best things to see in the area. The lighthouse was built in 1912 and is a historical site in the area. There are even virtual historical tours you can take.
Victoria
Victoria, the capital city of British Columbia, was founded in 1843 and is a hub of Canadian history. While in the heart of the city, explore Bastion Square (shops, restaurants, and bars galore), take a walk through Fan Tan Alley, which lays claim to being Canada’s narrowest street, or take a tour!

Botswana
The southern African country of Botswana continues to face a series of threats to its expansive, wildlife-rich national parks and game reserves, ranging from illegal hunting to overtourism. But new measures are helping case some of the pressure. The Tuli Block holds animals like leopards and a large elephant population. Visitors can enjoy guided safaris here, experiencing the stunning wildlife up close while supporting conservation efforts.

(25-26高二上·辽宁辽西重点高中·期中)Throughout the past year, we followed some interesting new inventions in the field of artificial intelligence (AI). Here is a look back at some notable AI developments in 2022.
Meta’s speech-to-speech translation
Facebook’s parent Meta said it had built a technology tool to directly translate between English and the Hokkien language, a spoken language without a widely used written form. Meta said it trained its AI models on written text examples from Mandarin Chinese. In addition, developers used an encoding (编码) tool designed to compare spoken Hokkien to similar English text.
Method to identify Parkinson’s disease
Researchers announced a new AI method to identify Parkinson’s disease. The system works by measuring a person’s breathing patterns during sleep. With just one night of sleep, the Al system was able to correctly identify Parkinson’s up to 86 percent of the time. With 12 nights of data, the rate went up to 95 percent.
Tool to interpret pig emotions
Researchers announced they had created a technology tool that uses pig sounds to interpret different emotions. The tool is based on thousands of recordings collected from more than 400 pigs throughout their lives. The scientists developed an AI-driven algorithm (算法) to identify a series of emotions pigs could be experiencing. It is expected to lead to further systems farmers can use to improve the productivity and well-being of their animals.
Tool to fill in missing words in ancient writings
Researchers-led by Alphabet’s AI company DeepMind-said they developed an AI system to help fill in missing words in ancient writings. The tool, called Ithaca, is designed to help historians repair the writings and identify when and where they were written.
