Many people may mistakenly believe that corals (珊瑚) are colourful plants. But in fact, they’re made of sea animals called polyps (珊瑚虫). They build hard, rock-like skeletons (骨骼) around themselves. When the polyps die, the skeletons remain. So a coral is a mix of living polyps and skeletons.
Although corals can be found in many parts of the ocean, they develop into huge coral reefs (礁) mainly in warm, shallow water. Coral reefs play an important role in both the natural world and human society. They provide homes for sea animals, and help protect villages, farms and cities along the coast from storms. Coral reefs have bright colours. They are beautiful to look at, so they also boost tourism, helping local people become richer. The world’s biggest coral reef is Australia’s Great Barrier Reef.
Actually, as long as corals are protected, reefs will continue to grow. However, as the earth gets warmer, corals are in danger. How to deal with the problem?
Scientists have tested a method to protect corals. Just like humans need different nutrients (营养物质) to stay healthy, corals do too. The scientists put the nutrients into special tiles (瓦片), and place them near the corals. When the nutrients go into the water slowly, the corals can take them in. The results are encouraging. After taking in the nutrients, the corals grow stronger and show greater ability to survive. Scientists hope that this method can help bring dying corals back to life.
( ) 31. What does the underlined word “boost” probably mean?
A. Improve. B. Hurt. C. Benefit from. D. Prepare for.
( ) 32. Why are coral reefs important?

( ) 33. Why do scientists want to give nutrients to corals?
A. To make corals grow larger in size.
B. To help corals survive climate change.
C. To change the colours of coral reefs.
D. To lower the temperature of the ocean.

Hello, everyone! Today I’d like to share a wonderful example of humans living in harmony with nature. The Great Bamboo Sea of China lies in Anji, a county in the north of Zhejiang province. The county is known as “China’s Bamboo Town”.
The Great Bamboo Sea of China has stood there for thousands of years. Local people have long learned to live in harmony with it. It provides a home for wildlife, making the place livelier. Beyond that, the bamboo forest serves local people very well. They use bamboo to make everyday items. This naturally helps reduce plastic use and protect their land. Most importantly, the development of ecological tourism not only improves the lives of local people, but also shows visitors the importance of protecting nature.
The Great Bamboo Sea of China is truly a beautiful symphony of humans and nature. The example reminds us that by protecting and respecting nature, we can enjoy its gifts forever.
Thanks for listening!
