The Olympic spirit
When it comes to the Olympic Games, people often think of medals, but the Olympics are about so much more. They are about friendship, fair play and never giving up.
Kieran Behan, an Irish gymnast, dreamt of competing in the Olympics from a young age. When he was just 10 years old, he fell ill and doctors told him that he would never walk again. Kieran faced this with courage. He followed a careful plan and worked step by step to get back to training. He got hurt when he was 12, and doctors said the same thing. But still, he did not give up. Finally, at the age of 23, his dream came true: he made it to the London 2012 Olympics.
The Olympic Games are more than a competition. They celebrate not only amazing performances, but also people’s will to keep going even when the way forward seems impossible.
What did Kieran Behan experience before he competed in the 2012 Olympics?
When he was 10, he fell ill and doctors said he would never walk again. He got hurt again at 12. But he never gave up and finally made it to the London 2012 Olympics.

Amy and Daniel are talking about how people get through difficulties.
Read and think
Amy: Do you know about Anne Frank? She was a teenager during World War II.
Daniel: I’ve heard of her. Why do you ask?
Amy: I just think she was so brave. During the war, she and her family had to live in secret. It was a terrible time, but they never gave up hope. Anne kept a diary and recorded her experiences. It has become a symbol of the victory of the human spirit.
Daniel: I agree. It’s amazing how Anne managed to get through the tough times. Her story reminds me of the musician Xian Xinghai. He also lived through World War II.
Amy: I’ve heard of him. He wrote great music in times of war.
Daniel: Yes. He kept writing music and wouldn’t let anything stop him. His music greatly encouraged Chinese people during difficult times.
