- Title: The Million Pound Bank Note
- Writer: Mark Twain
- Main characters: Henry Adams
- When and where: In 1903, in London.
- What does the character do: A poor young man Henry gets a million-pound bank note. He goes shopping and dining without paying cash.
- Why does he do it: Two rich brothers make a bet to see if a poor man can survive with only this huge banknote.
- Result: Henry becomes popular, makes lots of friends and gets a good job.
This story tells us money can change people’s attitudes, but kindness and honesty are more valuable than money.
Step 2:Write your review with the help of the chart.
Money Cannot Buy Everything
The Million Pound Bank Note is a famous short story written by Mark Twain. Its main character is a poor young man called Henry Adams.
The story takes place in London in 1903. Two rich brothers give Henry a million-pound bank note and make a bet. Henry cannot change the big note into small money, so he uses it to eat and shop on credit. Shop owners all respect him because they think he is a rich man. In the end, Henry gets a good job and makes many new friends.
I think this story is really great. It shows money can bring people respect, but honesty and good personalities are something much more important than money. True respect never comes from wealth alone.
Step 3:Check.
Did you:
include the facts and the plot of the story?
use the words and expressions from the reading passage?
give your opinion about money?
Step 4:Share your review with the class.
