  When I was young, I loved paper cutting and I was pretty good at it. As I grew up, I became busy and didn’t have much time for it. Later, I stopped doing it.

  However, the news I came across online touched my heart and changed my mind. A little girl from Jieyang, Guangdong was practicing lion dance when a professional lion dance performance team passed by. As soon as they saw the girl practicing, they started to beat drums and gongs for her and quickly she did a lion dance in return. People around all cheered for her. Her love for the ancient Chinese culture evoked my strong memories of paper cutting.

  I remembered the happy times of making paper cuttings with my teacher and friends in the club. When I was ten, I joined the paper cutting club. Every Monday and Friday, I learned to make paper cuttings there. Our teacher, Ms. Li, was very talented.

  With a pair of scissors and a piece of paper, she could create lively works. That amazed us. And we learned much from her. Together, we created lots of works. They covered many topics, including animals, flowers and things about Chinese history. Every time we held a paper cutting show, our works attracted many visitors. The girl in the news encouraged me to go on with paper cutting. I want to be an inheritor (继承者) of the ancient Chinese culture. Together with other inheritors, I hope to pass down our excellent culture.

  Middle school students in Valdosta are learning the importance of agriculture. Joshua Dawson, a Lowndes County Extension agent, helped seventh grade students at J.L. Newbern Middle School build raised bed plant boxes to grow crops. Dawson’s work with the school gardens began in 2014 as a part of the Valdosta School Garden and Orchard Project. Through support from local businesses and members of the community, it is used to introduce Valdosta elementary and middle school students to gardening and agriculture.

  Some of the crops grown in the gardens include sweet potatoes, carrots and so on. The harvested produce is used by the school dining rooms to serve during lunch and students are allowed to take produce home depending on the harvest size.

  Members of the local Master Gardener programme are helping Dawson with the gardens. With his daily responsibilities as a County Extension agent, Dawson depends heavily on their support. “Without the Master Gardeners, I don’t know if any of this would be possible. They look after the gardens and work with the teachers closely, and provide necessary feet on the ground for a lot of things,” Dawson said.

  In the beginning, the students were worried about working in the garden, but Dawson said those doubts disappeared quickly. “I like watering the plants and working with the soil,” said Anthony Aikens, a seventh grader. Anthony said his favourite subject is science and wants to be a zoologist or a full‑time gardener when he grows up.

  Dr Elena Ponder, principal of J.L. Newbern Middle School, said many students are interested in this project. She said working in the garden provides students with a cross‑curriculum (交叉课程) where they use different skills to solve problems. “Once you plant a garden, you have to attend to that garden. That shows you have the work ethic (职业道德), patience and time to put into something. That will translate into skills they will need in the future jobs,” she said.
