About half of the world's population is now at risk of dengue with an estimated 100–400 million infections occurring each year. While many dengue infections produce only mild illness, the virus can occasionally cause more severe cases, and even death. Fortunately, Adi Utarini, a public health researcher at Gadjah Mada University, and her team reported a big victory—they managed to cut cases of dengue fever by 77% in parts of a large Indonesian city, Yogyakarta. Work on the Yogyakarta trial (试验) started in 2011. The technique breeds Aedes aegypti mosquitoes that transmit the dengue virus, and makes them carry a bacterium (细菌) called Wolbachia. The bacterium controls the virus and prevents the mosquitoes from passing it on to humans. Eggs from the transformed mosquitoes are then placed around the city, often in people's homes. But initially, the team faced some problems getting government agreement. Utarini negotiated with several government officials, eventually winning approval in 2013. Another important test was for the team to get buy-in from the community that would host the mosquitoes. Utarini led the team to use media announcements, wall paintings, face-to-face meetings and even a short-film competition to inform the community about the technology and answer people's questions about the trial. More often than not, community members were keen to be in the treatment areas. When the findings were revealed, the community was very enthusiastic. Wolbachia mosquitoes are now being released across Yogyakarta and, for the first time, dengue researchers are considering the idea that they could wipe out the virus from a city, or perhaps even a country. But Utarini's victorious year has also been touched by tragedy. In March, her husband died of a lung disease. However, instead of being defeated, she turned to her other passions like piano playing and cycling. When it comes to dengue, Utarini says, “I believe in this technology. Maybe there is finally a light in the dark.” 21.What was the achievement of Utarini and her team? A. Estimating the probability of dengue infections. B. Finding an effective way to prevent dengue virus. C. Promoting the public health education in Yogyakarta. D. Curing 100 million cases of dengue fever successfully. 22.What did the scientists do with the Aedes aegypti mosquitoes? A. They made the mosquitoes develop dengue fever. B. They added a functional bacterium to the mosquitoes. C. They stopped the mosquitoes from approaching people. D. They provided the mosquitoes with more space to lay eggs. 23.What is paragraph 3 mainly about? A. How the researchers addressed the challenges. B. How the community responded to Utarini's trial. C. What feedback the community gave to the scientists. D. Why community members preferred treatment areas. 24.What do dengue researchers think of removing dengue virus entirely? A. It lacks support. B. It needs more trials. C. It will be possible. D. It will be unpromising. B In college, I usually looked forward to the icebreaker games at the start of some of my classes. We'd go around the circle, tell everyone our name, year, and major, and successfully waste time on the first day of class when the professor didn't have anything educational planned. But the icebreakers I looked forward to weren't happening in my science classes. Kids were in creative writing seminars. I loved the writing classes. I had no idea—and, frankly, didn't much care—how and whether my classes would impact my career. I liked science, and I liked writing, so maybe I'd combine them, or maybe not? But I have this fear that some science students avoid branching out, not because they don't want to, but because they believe they're not supposed to. They see their peers keeping their heads down, only focused on science, science, science, and they don't want to admit loving their optional medieval history seminar and become a weirdo (怪人) in the eyes of others.  “Be well-rounded,” we're often told. Yes, no one directly discouraged me from taking a variety of classes in college. But I can't honestly say we always treat it that way. And although my graduate department head nicely allowed me to take writing classes, other professors didn't share the same open-mindedness, showing disapproval or skepticism towards any outside academic interest. The science, we're told, either frankly or implicitly, is the important part. You got a good grade in organic chemistry?Amazing! You're going places! The other subjects are either requirements to bear or optional activities that can be approached with minimal effort. And it's fine if that's what you prefer. But take my word for it:You can be a scientist and do other things, too—and the time while you're enrolled in school is a perfect opportunity. If you find yourself debating whether to add a little nonscience to your science training, consider your interests, and consider your bandwidth, but don't let weird guilt hold you back. So go ahead, add a class, and add a hobby. 25.What does the underlined phrase “branching out” in paragraph 3 probably mean? A. Trying new things. B. Developing new branches. C. Pursuing new careers. D. Stepping out of comfortable zones. 26.Why do some science students only focus on their major according to the text? A. They have no other hobbies. B. They get no support from parents. C. They are afraid of appearing different. D. They dislike any icebreaker games. 27.What is other professors' attitude towards taking writing classes in college? A. Approving. B. Opposed. C. Objective. D. Tolerant. 28.What's the author's purpose in writing the text? A. To inspire people to develop interests in science. B. To point out the importance of writing to science. C. To encourage science students to explore other interests. D. To call for the diversified development of college education. 三、完形填空 My daughter, Presleigh was asking for a LOL-brand pencil box, like the other kids had in her class, so I intended to pick one when shopping for school supplies. After three stores I bought one as a      29       . I thought she would be      30       . But she stared at it and threw it in the trash. She yelled, “That's stupid. Everyone in my class has that. I don't want it anymore!” I was shocked by her     31        .  There was probably smoke coming out of my ears and I was trying hard not to go      32        at my kid, whom I had worked so hard to completely   33   financially on my own and make sure she always gets what she needs. I thought I had always taught her to be    34          and know how lucky she was, but       35      , she needed a small wakeup    36         !  I finally decided to get her a new pencil box, which was a ziploc bag. As to be      37       , the 6-year-old didn't like the ziploc pencil box very much. The LOL box she just      38        was good enough.  Instead of      39        to her disappointment, I     40         the dramatic situation into a learning lesson about helping others. I      41        to her she's not entitled to anything special and that she didn't realize how lucky she was. Eventually, she kept the ziploc box and personally      42        the nice box to a child that could benefit from it.
