On August 20th, 2024, the Chinese gaming industry reached a milestone with the global release of Black Myth: Wukong, a new AAA action role-playing game developed by Game Science. Within hours of launch, it topped Steam’s most-played single-player list, gaining significant attention on social media.
Black Myth: Wukong draws on Chinese mythologies (神话) and the classic novel Journey to the West. It allows players to assume the role of Sun Wukong and start grand adventures. Inspired by the film A Chinese Odyssey, the game creates a vivid dreamscape with Chinese scenery, like remote mountains and wild roads. The various demons and other figures with Chinese-style designs in the game are based on The Classic of Mountains and Seas, breathing new life into the ancient tales of Chinese mythology.
Feng Ji, Game Science founder and CEO, emphasized that the game was created entirely by a Chinese team to bring Chinese stories to the global gaming stage. He said, “The script and artistic concepts always take the lead, harmoniously integrating Chinese stories and classical cultural elements into the game.” He believed that a game’s true value is not determined by its budget or visuals, but by the genuine enjoyment it offers players.
According to the Xinhua News Agency, to create a truly Immersive (沉浸式的), world-class game, the game’s production team spent years traveling across China, scanning historical and cultural sites and integrating them into every game scene. The game features 36 locations thoroughly modeled after real-world sites, with 27 of them located in Shanxi Province, China, offering players a unique and immersive visual experience.
The game has increased interest in Shanxi’s cultural heritage. Bookings for trips to Shanxi have doubled since July, and the number of tourists to Shanxi has grown by 50%. Shanxi has rich tourism resources but lacks recognition both at home and abroad. The game has presented Shanxi’s cultural relics in a pleasing and effective way, arousing people’s interest in the province’s culture and travel.
24. What does paragraph 2 mainly tell us about the game?
A. Its target players. B. Its wide popularity.
C. Its design inspiration. D. Its cultural significance.
25. What is the key to making a truly valuable game according to Feng Ji?
A. Creating high profits for the game company.
B. Providing a satisfying experience for players.
C. Integrating Chinese stories into artistic concepts.
D. Designing impressive characters and visual effects.
26. Which of the following words can best describe the game’s production team?
A. Ambitious but critical. B. Experienced but stubborn.
C. Confident and productive. D. Devoted and high-standard.
27. How does the game benefit Shanxi Province?
A. By promoting its cultural tourism.
B. By improving its international status.
C. By calling for the protection of its heritage.
D. By attracting investment to its game industry.

A grammar school boy from Stratford-Upon-Avon has made headlines after a groundbreaking study showed that Shakespeare does benefit children’s literacy and emotional development, but only if they can act him out.
The study found that a drama-based approach to teaching Shakespeare broadened children’s vocabulary, improved the quality of their writing, and enhanced their emotional understanding. “The way actors work makes a big difference to how children use language and how they think about themselves,” said Jacqui O’Hanlon, lead researcher of the study.
The random trial involved hundreds of Year 5 pupils (aged nine and ten) at 45 state primary schools. The children were divided into a target group and a control group. Both groups read a passage from Romeo and Juliet and were asked to write a letter as Romeo after being separated from Juliet. Before writing, the target group took part in a 30-minute drama-based activity, while the control group did not.
It was shown that pupils in the target group drew on a wider vocabulary, used more complicated or rarer words, and wrote at greater length. They also appeared more comfortable writing in role. While pupils in the control group imagined how they themselves would react to being separated from a loved one, children in the target group put themselves in Romeo’s shoes and expressed that character’s emotion.
O’Hanlon said she had been most surprised by the emotional understanding evident in the children’s writing, and that they showed deeper empathy and expressed emotions more vividly. “It is probably related to the drama-based process, where you are used to trying to think and feel as the character,” she added.
But could the results be reproduced with any old dramatists? O’Hanlon said more research would be needed but suggested that Shakespeare’s use of 20,000 words, compared with the everyday 2,000 words, gave a massive expansion of language into children’s lives, which was combined with children using their whole bodies to bring words to life.
28. What does the study encourage children to do?
A. To perform Shakespeare’s works.
B. To write their own original plays.
C. To learn Shakespeare’s lines by heart.
D. To watch professional acting on stage.
29. What can be inferred about the procedure of the study?
A. The selected children were interested in drama.
B. The target group wrote a letter directly after reading.
C. The two groups were given different reading materials.
D. The drama activity was the key factor tested in the study.
30. What impressed O’Hanlon most about the target group’s writing?
A. Passage fluency. B. Emotional depth.
C. Word complexity. D. Plot imagination.
31. What can be learned from the text?
A. Practice makes perfect.
B. Learning by doing works best.
C. Reading makes a full man.
D. Words are the voice of the mind.

Our solar system orbits the Milky Way galaxy’s center once about every 210 million years, traveling along at around 240 kilometers per second — an astonishing rate we don’t feel because the entire system moves at the same constant speed. But a new study suggests our solar system is a laggard in the universe compared with one system in our galaxy that was somehow accelerated to a speed of 541 kilometers a second, making it the swiftest planetary system ever found. “This speed was extremely high and kind of shocking,” says astrophysicist Terry. It introduces a series of questions about the survivability of these types of systems.
This galactic speed “monster” appears to center on a red dwarf star (红矮星) which is smaller and less bright than our sun. It’s about 24,500 light years from Earth and some 1,500 light years away from our galaxy’s center. Astronomers discovered the star and a suspected accompanying planet after a 2011 “microlensing” event called MOA-2011-BLG-262, when the system passed in front of a background star and bent the latter’s light. Terry and his colleagues observed the system again in 2021. They found that its known planet is most likely a gas giant with about 29 times Earth’s mass that orbits its star at a distance.
The researchers also mapped the system’s position in the 2021 data relative to where it was about a decade prior, revealing how fast it traveled. It might be a hyper-speed star system, an example of a rare class of astronomical objects that have been speed up by past encounters with other stars’ gravity — or even by a gravitational slingshot (弹弓) from the supermassive black hole at the center of our galaxy. These objects travel faster than 500 kilometers a second, and the speediest known one travels at over 2,000 kilometers a second.
“It’s an extraordinary category of stars,” Terry says estimating that the system in this study more than doubled its speed after its own dramatic encounter. “No previous hyper-speed stars have been found with planets. This might open up a new study of the origin and evolution of planets around very high-speed stars,” he adds.
32. What does the underlined word “laggard” in the first paragraph refer to?
A. Something moving slowly. B. Something becoming famous.
C. Something traveling endlessly. D. Something looking incomparable.
33. What can we learn about the “monster” from paragraph 2?
A. Its star is much brighter than our sun.
B. Its planet’s mass is identical to Venus’s.
C. It’s closer to the galactic center than to Earth.
D. It’s a system discovered through its own light.
34. What does Terry think of the discovery?
A. It is accidental. B. It is strange. C. It is pioneering. D. It is common.
35. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A. The Milky Way Galaxy’s Center B. The Solar System’s Bright Stars
C. The Fastest Astronomical Objects D. The Record-breaking Planetary System
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Many teenagers regard volunteering as a boring task required for school graduation. They often complain that voluntary work takes up their spare time and brings no real benefits to their study. This common misunderstanding makes them treat community service passively. 36
Last vacation, I took part in a community volunteer project designed to assist elderly residents living alone. My main duties included purchasing daily necessities for seniors, teaching them basic smartphone skills and accompanying them on daily walks. 37 The endless repeated chores made me feel the work simple and repetitive.
Gradually, my attitude changed completely. I found that most lonely seniors suffered more from emotional loneliness than a lack of material support. 38 Every time I patiently listened to their life stories and chatted with them, I could see obvious warmth and relief on their faces.
39 It enables us to contact different groups of people, understand real social needs and develop empathy (共情). Unlike textbook knowledge that stays theoretical, volunteer practice turns moral education into real feelings and actions.
Indeed, volunteering is a journey of mutual benefit. 40 For teenagers growing up in a fast-paced society, such valuable spiritual growth is irreplaceable.
A. They were eager for communication and company.
B. Spiritual growth is the least that volunteering can give.
C. Few truly realize the long-term value of such an experience.
D. At first, I participated merely to finish my school service hours.
E. We warm others while building our responsibility and commitment.
F. Many people believe volunteering mainly benefits those receiving help.
G. Volunteering offers teenagers a chance to break away from their routine student life.

At nine years old, Charlotte went through more than the usual amount of excitement and change for a girl. In the past few months, her stable life had been turned upside down when her father was laid off from his job. This brought about a series of events, including her parents losing their beautiful Victorian home and forcing their family into a fifteen-foot trailer (拖车) they had previously only used for weekend camping trips.
Life in the trailer was tough, yet it was filled with warmth. Though her family possessed little, their door was never closed to those who had even less. Never will she forget the first time they squeezed onto the tiny couch (长沙发) together, which doubled as her parents’ bed at night. One evening, as her mother was checking the last food they had, her voice trembled, “We don’t have enough food to last the week.” Hearing this, Charlotte was seized by a sense of sadness, like a huge stone settled in her heart.
Moments later, her mother rose to prepare the modest (简陋的) chicken dinner. Charlotte wandered outside where her dad was working on their broken-down truck. Just then, a middle-aged man with dirty clothes emerged from a winding path. Coming right up to them, the man whispered in hesitation with a mix of shame and hope, “I… I am a hiker and have got lost. I’m hungry and wondering if you have any food to spare.”
Charlotte’s heart tightened, countless thoughts racing in her mind. They barely had enough for themselves. The chicken for dinner wouldn’t even fill three plates. “But the man seems to be in greater need of food than we do,” she thought to herself.
“Of course!” The words escaped Charlotte before she even realized it.

Days later, the hiker returned with a big bag.
