Summer Camps for Young Writers
These specialized camps help students master unique writing and artistic forms through daily practice and expert guidance.
Filmmaking as Dialogue
In this class taught by filmmakers Isidore Bethel, we will use the camera to facilitate and enrich our interactions with others — friends, family, animals, plants, and the world around us. Writing texts with a partner, recording and sharing short videos, and interpreting their meanings aloud will be starting points for developing individual and collaborative approaches to filmmaking.
Intro to Poetry: The Image and the Line
Emma Wood, Executive Director of Stone Soup, will teach a class on poetry. Immerse yourself in what a poem is and what it can do. Students will write their own poetry, shaking themselves out of established modes of thinking.
Reality Hunger: An Introduction to Memoir
In this class, also led by Emma Wood, you will read and write memoirs and personal essays — in short form. You will consider how they work, ask questions about the moral aspects of writing nonfiction (What if my mom reads it? What if I hurt someone’s feelings? What if my memory is “wrong”?), and — most importantly — experiment in the form with daily in-class writing prompts (提示), sharing your work in a supportive and fun community.
Literature in Miniature: A Study of Micro Fiction & Prose Poetry
Sometimes, the biggest ideas are best expressed in the tiniest forms. In this workshop taught by former Stone Soup Blog Editor Caleb Berg, you will learn to channel your horizons into a style of writing perfected by some famous writers. You will write multiple separate pieces per day and finish the class with enough writing to fill up a booklet.
21. Which summer camp encourages teamwork when students make videos?
A. The first one. B. The second one.
C. The third one. D. The fourth one.
22. What do Emma Wood’s two classes have in common?
A. They focus on fiction writing.
B. They focus on short-form poetry.
C. They inspire learners to ask moral questions.
D. They highlight learners’ hands-on experience.
23. What will students gain from Caleb Berg’s class?

B. A new way of writing short works.
C. Rights to get their works come out.
D. Chances to meet some famous writers.

For me, being a teacher is not only about introducing students to mathematical facts and techniques, but is also about helping students grow both academically and personally, explore their interests, and develop their talents. To do this, I have to go beyond the conventional definition of a woman teacher as someone who simply demonstrates academic content and evaluates students’ progress.
Over my career as a teacher, I’ve learned to listen to suggestions and questions from students in order to improve my own teaching practice. I revised my lecture notes based on a student’s suggestion from years ago. It was during a visit to a school that a Grade 3 student asked me what the world would look like without mathematics. Ever since, whenever I give a talk about the importance of mathematics, this has been the question I always ask the audience.
My class is just one piece in the possibly complex mosaic (镶嵌图案) of my students’ lives. Other academic and non-academic interests, family dynamics, health conditions, economic backgrounds, and social status all play a crucial part as well. Recognizing this, I always accept my students as individuals, each with their own distinct learning styles, educational histories, and working habits. This acceptance drives me to actively discover their stories. By listening to them with empathy and patience, whether during open-office hours or even brief chats on public transport, I learn how to enhance my teaching methods and approaches to suit their generation.
As educators, we have the privilege of connecting with young people and contributing to the quality of their present and future lives. I aim to find a balance between respecting my students’ personalities, entrusting them with the responsibility to take on the necessary work themselves, and doing all I can to help them achieve their academic and personal goals.
24. Why does the author mention the conventional definition of a teacher in paragraph 1?
A. To stress its limitations. B. To demonstrate its accuracy.
C. To introduce ordinary students. D. To confirm traditional teaching.
25. What did the author do with the Grade 3 student’s question?
A. Add it to the talk.
B. Reject it on the spot.
C. Exclude it from the lecture notes.
D. Offer some suggestions regarding it.
26. What pushes the author to discover her students’ stories?
A The need to test her patience.
B. The respect for unique individuality.
C. The desire to share them in public transport.
D. The interest in exploring political backgrounds.
27. What can we learn from the author’s experiences?
A. Still tongues tell great truths. B. Good teachers are students’ ears.
C. Actions speak louder than words. D. Knowledge comes from questioning.
【答案】24. A 25. A 26. B 27. B

When a heat wave struck Illinois in June 2022, crop physiologist Meacham-Hensold hoped her team’s new bioengineered potato variety would survive it — but she was astounded by just how well it grew. The plant produced an unexpected 30% more of its large red tubers than a normal, unengineered plant in the same conditions.
To engineer the potato, Meacham-Hensold and her colleagues focused on a process in most plants called photorespiration (光呼吸), in which a key photosynthesis enzyme (光合作用酶) known as RuBisCO gets sidetracked and begins making a poisonous by-product. RuBisCO molecules (分子)need to bind to carbon dioxide (CO₂) to carry out photosynthesis, but about a quarter of the time they grab oxygen instead — and this erroneous process happens more often at high temperatures. This inefficiency can decrease crop yields by as much as 50%.
In the new engineered potatoes, a gene inserted into the plant cell’s nucleus produced a protein that traveled into the chloroplast (叶绿体), the cell organelle used in photosynthesis. There it broke down the poisonous by-product, so the chloroplast didn’t need to send it out to other organelles. This saved energy, similar to how eating local food saves the energy of trucking it across the country.
During the engineered potatoes’ 2022 growing season in the Illinois test field an extreme heat wave brought four days with temperatures higher than 95°F. But the new potato’s genetic change — which can be passed on to the next generation — boosted yield by almost a third. “We were really shocked,” Meacham-Hensold says. “The photosynthesis process is a promising target for agricultural engineering, because it can increase crop yield without the need for extra land use and fertilizer,” she adds. She thinks the new technique could help crops adapt to climate change. Similar strategies have been used previously in rice, but this study is the first to show that it doesn’t cause a decrease in a food crop’s nutritional quality.
28. What does the underlined word “astounded” in paragraph 1 mean?
A. Worried. B. Confused. C. Surprised. D. Annoyed.
29. What did Meacham-Hensold and her colleagues want to do?
A. Remove CO2 from plant cells.
B. Replace RuBisCO with artificial enzymes.
C. Increase the soil temperature for crops’ growth.
D. Improve potato output by fixing photorespiration.
30. What does paragraph 3 mainly explain about the engineered potato gene?
A. How it changes the structure of chloroplast.
B. How it transports energy within the plant cell.
C. How it removes poison to avoid energy waste.
D. How it increases protein production in chloroplast.
31. What is Meacham-Hensold’s attitude to the new technique?
A. Critical. B. Indifferent. C. Calm. D. Appreciative.
【答案】28. C 29. D 30. C 31. D
根据第一段“When a heat wave struck Illinois in June 2022, crop physiologist Meacham-Hensold hoped her team’s new bioengineered potato variety would survive it — but she was astounded by just how well it grew. The plant produced an unexpected 30% more of its large red tubers than a normal, unengineered plant in the same conditions.
根据第二段“To engineer the potato, Meacham-Hensold and her colleagues focused on a process in most plants called photorespiration (光呼吸), in which a key photosynthesis enzyme (光合作用酶) known as RuBisCO gets sidetracked and begins making a poisonous by-product. (为了对土豆进行基因改造,Meacham-Hensold和她的同事们关注了大多数植物中一种叫做光呼吸的过程,在这个过程中,一种名为RuBisCO的关键光合作用酶偏离正轨,开始产生一种有毒的副产品)”以及第四段“During the engineered potatoes’ 2022 growing season in the Illinois test field, an extreme heat wave brought four days with temperatures higher than 95°F. But the new potato’s genetic change — which can be passed on to the next generation — boosted yield by almost a third.(在伊利诺伊州试验田2022年的工程马铃薯生长季节,一场极端热浪带来了四天的温度高于95°F。但这种新马铃薯的基因变化——可以传递给下一代——使产量提高了近三分之一)”可知,Meacham-Hensold和她的同事们致力于纠正光呼吸这一低效过程所导致的问题,他们通过植入基因使植物能够有效处理光呼吸的有毒副产物,从而达到提高土豆产量的目的。故选D。
【30题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第三段“In the new engineered potatoes, a gene inserted into the plant cell’s nucleus produced a protein that traveled into the chloroplast (叶绿体), the cell organelle used in photosynthesis. There it broke down the poisonous by-product, so the chloroplast didn’t need to send it out to other organelles. This saved energy, similar to how eating local food saves the energy of trucking it across the country.(在新的基因工程土豆中,插入植物细胞核的一个基因产生了一种蛋白质,这种蛋白质进入叶绿体 (光合作用中使用的细胞器)。在那里,它分解了有毒的副产品,所以叶绿体不需要把它送到其他细胞器。这节省了能量,就像吃当地食物节省了在全国运输食物的能量一样)”可知,新植入的基因在植物细胞核中产生一种蛋白质,这种蛋白质进入叶绿体并分解有毒副产物,从而节省了能量。因此,第三段主要解释了这种基因如何通过去除毒素来避免能量浪费。故选C。
【31题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“The photosynthesis process is a promising target for agricultural engineering, because it can increase crop yield without the need for extra land use and fertilizer, (光合作用过程是农业工程的一个有前景的目标,因为它可以在不需要额外土地使用和肥料的情况下提高作物产量)”以及“She thinks the new technique could help crops adapt to climate change. (她认为这项新技术可以帮助作物适应气候变化)”可知,Meacham-Hensold表示,这种新技术可以帮助作物适应气候变化,并且她认为这种新技术很有前景。因此,她对这种新技术持赞赏的态度。故选D。

To average people, it must seem as if the field of artificial intelligence (AI) is making great progress. Even a high-level manager in a high-tech company went so far as to think that the attempt to create AI that has the flexibility and resourcefulness of human intelligence — known as artificial general intelligence, or AGI, has reached a point where the game is over. Don’t be fooled. Machines may someday be as smart as people and perhaps even smarter, but the game is far from over. There is still a large amount of work to be done in making machines that truly can comprehend and reason about the world around them. What we need right now is less posturing and more basic research.
At present, AI is making progress — synthetic (合成的) images look more and more realistic, and speech recognition can often work in noisy environments — but we are still likely decades away from general-purpose and human-level AI that can understand the true meanings of articles and videos or deal with unexpected obstacles and interruptions. The field is stuck on precisely the same challenges that academic scientists have been pointing out for years: getting AI to be reliable and getting it to cope with unusual circumstances.
Unfortunately, the fact that these systems still fail to work reliably and struggle with novel circumstances is usually buried in the fine print. One system, for instance, worked well on all the tasks the high-tech company reported but rarely as well as other contemporary systems.
Although deep learning has advanced the ability of machines to recognize patterns in data, it has three major faults. The patterns that it learns are superficial (表面的), not conceptual. The results it creates are hard to interpret and difficult to use in the context of other processes, such as memory and reasoning. As Harvard University computer scientist Leslie Valiant noted, “The central challenge going forward is to unify the formulation (规划) of learning and reasoning.” Given these limitations, it’s time for AI researchers to concentrate on building systems that can learn and reason, not just chase media attention.
32. How does the author develop paragraph 1?
A. By providing statistics.
B. By making assumptions.
C. By supporting the average people’s views.
D. By contrasting the public idea with reality.
33. Which statement best fits the current AI?
A. It is recognized widely.
B. It is facing reliability issues.
C. It can deal with unusual circumstances.
D. It can understand the true meaning of the text.
34. What is the author’s main purpose in writing the last paragraph?
A. To highlight AI’s strengths.
B. To redirect AI research focus.
C. To show AI’s memory processes.
D. To praise the work of AI researchers.
35. What is a suitable title for the text?
A. Treat AI Reasonably
B. AI Should Be Suspected
C. AI Is Making Great Progress
D. Get AI to Recognize Patterns in Data
【答案】32. D 33. B 34. B 35. A

【答案】参考范文:
Dear Jenny,
I’m excited to tell you about the tai chi competition held at my school last week. The event took place on the sunlit sports ground. Over fifty participants in white uniforms moved gracefully to soft music, creating a peaceful atmosphere.
As a first-time competitor, I felt both nervous and inspired. Through weeks of practice, I learned that tai chi is not just about slowing movements — it’s a way to calm the mind and improve focus. Although I didn’t win a prize, I gained a deeper appreciation for this ancient art.
If you visit China someday, I’d love to show you some basic moves!
Yours,
Li Hua

The summer after my junior year, I volunteered at Greenfield Community Park. The park, once a lively space, had slowly grown shabby (破败的). After obtaining permission from the park manager, I, along with three other teens, decided to help restore it by clearing overgrown trails and planting young trees.
Our little group was a mix of personalities with diverse interests: Sam, a guitarist; Maya, a violinist; and me, a lover of singing. We spent the first days in the sun, pulling weeds and digging soil. We found our rhythm—Sam listed goals; Maya sketched flower beds; and I kept track of tools. Despite our differences, a friendly cooperation grew, like wildflowers springing up unexpectedly in a bare field.
The change came one afternoon. While clearing a corner near the park’s old outdoor theater, Sam found something hard under a tree’s roots. “It must be treasure!” he screamed. It was a metal box that seemed to have been buried there for years. Inside lay no treasure, but a wishing bottle in which there were handwritten musical notes and a fading letter. Its writer, a former park keeper named Joseph, described his dream of creating a “symphony under the sky” where nature and melody (旋律) could meet—a plan he never finished. We carefully placed the box in the theater, deciding it belonged there.
Inspired, we decided to bring Joseph’s dream to life. Sam suggested using the old theater; Maya designed decorations from leaves and branches. My job was to speak to the park manager—a task that felt huge for a teenager. I told her that we would form a band and hold our concert in the theater and that we wanted her to invite Joseph to come. “We’re not just cleaning the park. We’re rebuilding a story that belongs to all of us,” I explained. To our surprise, she agreed and even put up a poster for our concert. .

【答案】参考范文:
On the day of our “Nature’s Symphony” event, it looked like rain. Dark clouds gathered just as the first visitors arrived. A gentle rain began to fall as we were about to start. We quickly moved the musical instruments under the theater’s roof. As we did, the leaves of the young trees we had planted weeks before began to shine and dance under the raindrops, adding a silent, visual whisper to the symphony about to unfold. To our amazement, the raindrops created a natural rhythm—a perfect accompaniment to the wind melody. The audience, initially seeking shelter, began tapping along. The three of us also began our performance.
Just as we were performing harmoniously, the park manager walked in with Joseph. As our final note hung in the damp air, Joseph stepped forward. Not a word was spoken as his fingers lightly traced the edge of his old metal box. Then, turning to us, he simply nodded—a slow, deep gesture that carried the weight of decades. In that silent acknowledgement, under the gentle patter of rain on young leaves, we understood. We had not just played music; we had answered a call that had waited for a lifetime to be heard, completing a circle that began long before we were born.

A. A free booklet full of nonfiction.

A. The need to test her patience.
C
During the engineered potatoes’ 2022 growing season in the Illinois test field, an extreme heat wave brought four days with temperatures higher than 95°F.
30 What does paragraph 3 mainly explain about the engineered potato gene?
A. How it changes the structure of chloroplast.
B How it transports energy within the plant cell.
C. How it removes poison to avoid energy waste.
D. How it increases protein production in chloroplast.
31. What is Meacham-Hensold’s attitude to the new technique?
A. Critical. B. Indifferent. C. Calm. D. Appreciative.
D
A Treat AI Reasonably
B. AI Should Be Suspected
C. AI Is Making Great Progress
D. Get AI to Recognize Patterns in Data

Believing in your own worth is essential for a happy and healthy life. A sense of one’s worth starts developing early. ____36____ However, not all of them are positive or helpful. Psychologists note that negative beliefs such as “I’m not good enough” can limit us in many ways. The good news is that you can change them and grow your sense of self-worth. Here are some practical ways to strengthen your belief in yourself.
Recognize your strengths. Evaluate what you enjoy doing, and then intentionally give yourself the space to engage in that activity and acknowledge your value. Think about what you enjoy and are good at — whether at work or in your free time — and allow yourself to take part in those activities. ____37____
Celebrate your efforts. ____38____ Writing down positive statements or treating yourself kindly enhances your own worth, without waiting for others’ praise.
Speak to yourself kindly. ____39____ Would you speak to a friend the way you sometimes speak to yourself? Replace critical thoughts with supportive ones, like “I did my best”.
____40____ Make sure you are not always putting others’ needs before your own. When you put yourself behind others, you diminish your worth; when you maintain the main role, you remind your brain that you believe in your inherent value and worth.
Building self-worth takes time, especially if you’ve long held negative beliefs about yourself. But by practicing these steps regularly, you can begin to see that you are valuable, capable, and worthy — just as you are.
A. Prioritize others’ needs.
B. Acknowledge the value you bring.
C. Be the main character in your own life.
D. When you finish a task, reward yourself.
E. You should pay attention to your inner voice.
F. From childhood, you develop fundamental beliefs about yourself.
G. The coverage of self-worth is limited and does not extend far enough.

To our surprise, she agreed and even put up a poster for our concert. .
