Small Actions, Big Differences
It’s true that small actions can make a big difference to the world around us.
Last month, our class held a book donation activity. Many of us brought our old books to school. I gave away ten storybooks that I had read before. We collected over 200 books and sent them to a village school. When I saw the children’s happy faces in the thank-you letter, I felt very glad. Sharing books with others is really meaningful.
Besides, I often help my elderly neighbour, Mrs Wang, carry her heavy bags. She lives alone and sometimes feels lonely. Last Sunday, I spent an hour talking with her and reading newspapers to her. She held my hands and said, “You are so kind.” Her warm words made me feel good.
These small acts of kindness not only help others but also make the world a warmer, greener place.

A
阅读以下语篇,完成第29-32题。
Miss Martha owned a small bakery (面包店). She was forty, a kind woman with a big imagination. She was always curious about the customers stepping into her little shop, wondering about their daily lives and hidden stories.
One customer made her very curious. Wearing simple but tidy old-fashioned clothes and a pair of glasses, he visited the bakery twice every single week. Without exception, he only bought two loaves of hard bread each time, never looking at her mouth-watering fruit pies or freshly-baked creamy cakes.
Miss Martha jumped to the conclusion that he must be a poor, hungry artist. She imagined him living in a very small, cheap room, thinking only about his painting so much that he forgot to eat. The idea touched her kind heart. She began to wish she could help him.
The next time he came to the shop, she acted quickly while his back was turned. She took two hard loaves, made a small hole in each, and put a large piece of fresh butter inside. Then she wrapped them up as usual.
Her heart beat fast as she handed him the bread. She spent the rest of the day dreaming that he would discover her kindness and thank her.
Suddenly, the quiet of the afternoon was broken. The shop door flew open, and the man stormed in. His face was dark with anger. He threw the bread down hard on the table.
“I am an architect (建筑师)!” he shouted. “For the past three months, I have been working on a building plan. I draw in pencil, and I use pieces of hard bread as erasers. It works better than a rubber eraser! But now… look!”
He held up his drawing. A huge, dirty mark from the butter ran across the clean, straight lines.
“You filled my bread with butter!” he shouted. “My work is damaged!”
29. What does the first paragraph introduce?
A. The meaning of the story. B. The theme of the story.
C. The background of the story. D. The surprise of the story.
30. Why did Miss Martha put butter in the man’s bread?
A. To make her bakery famous. B. To show her love for the man.
C. To improve the man’s work. D. To make the bread expensive.
31. What’s the correct time order of the following events?
①The man went to the shop angrily.
②Miss Martha was curious about the man.
③The man began to work on a building plan.
④The man tried to erase lines with the bread that had butter inside.
A. ②④①③ B. ②③④① C. ③④②① D. ③②④①
32. What might Miss Martha realize in the end?
A. Good actions need real understanding first.
B. People had better try to make perfect plans.
C. You should avoid offering help to strangers.
D. It’s impolite to care about other people’s lives.

“I am not out of place. I am where I am at home.” says a German doctor Joel Mikael Walker, after performing acupuncture (针灸) on a patient in Zhengzhou, China. Some locals are amazed by receiving traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) from a foreigner, but Walker is sure about what he is doing. He is among a growing number of foreigners taking part in TCM, mixing their Western backgrounds with ancient Chinese healing arts (中医诊疗).
Walker, from Germany, came to China in 2015 and fell in love with Chinese Kungfu. While learning Shaolin Kungfu in Henan, he became curious about Chinese culture and medicine. After a year of Chinese study, he signed up in Henan University of Chinese Medicine. Since he learned acupuncture, he has treated over a thousand patients. “He is skilled in acupuncture,” says his teacher, Professor Yu Dongdong, “He can work on his own.”
Under his Chinese name “Wuming”, Walker has become an online hit on the video-sharing platform Douyin, gathering over one million followers. As a famous person on the Internet, he shares local culture in smooth Henan dialect (方言). “You have a more real-to-life grasp of Henan dialect than I do,” comments one follower. Many people like him because he joins in local culture. He also treated his grandmother’s health problems with acupuncture, improving her condition greatly.
With more and more fans, Walker feels a sense of responsibility (责任). “Posting videos was just for fun before, but now I want to take part in more meaningful projects,” he says. He plans to create videos promoting TCM and sharing stories of ancient Chinese medical experts. “I really want more people to know about TCM and its far-reaching cultural value,” he adds. Whether in China or Germany, he plans to keep working on TCM. “I will do anything to help people through TCM.”
33. What can we learn from Walker’s words in Para. 1?
A. He is comfortable with the present situation.
B. He is proud of his foreign background.
C. He is unwilling to treat the locals with TCM.
D. He is curious about doing acupuncture.
34. Why did Walker decide to study TCM?
A. His teacher advised him to learn it.
B. He decided to introduce TCM to Germany.
C. He wanted to become famous on the Internet.
D. He got the idea while learning Chinese Kungfu.
35. What does Para. 3 mainly talk about?
A. How Walker learned the Henan dialect.
B. Why Walker has many online followers.
C. How Walker helps his family with TCM.
D. Why Walker finds it hard to make videos.
36. What is the author’s purpose in writing this text?
A. To show the importance of TCM in education.
B. To explain how TCM can help people in China.
C. To introduce a special person working on TCM.
D. To encourage the use of dialects in promoting TCM.

阅读以下语篇,完成第37-40题。
①On TikTok, more and more Westerners are “becoming Chinese.” They practice qigong, drink hot water in the morning, eat rice or congee for breakfast or learn Mandarin on Duolingo, a language-learning app. Some even post videos saying, “You met me in a very Chinese moment of my life.” This “Chinamaxxing” trend has become hugely popular among Western young people.
②So why does it happen? This is connected to the fast rise of Chinese culture and soft power. As China attracts more global influence, topics about China naturally appear in mainstream online discussions. Many Westerners know little about China, so they have grown more curious about this wonderful country. What’s more, small parts of daily Chinese life are more attractive and easier to copy, instead of grand stories about national power.
③People have different opinions, though. Is “Chinamaxxing” real respect for Chinese culture, or just a fun copy? Some people say it is better than no interest at all. At least it makes Chinese culture more well-known and shows that people want to learn about it. Even if it does not bring big changes right away, it can help build better mutual (互相的) cultural understanding later on.
④Other people disagree. They say many popular online jokes and posts show Chinese life in a simple or one-sided way. What people do here is just copying parts of Chinese culture without a real understanding of it. This sudden wave of interest has made many overseas Chinese feel uncomfortable because many of them grew up experiencing racism (种族歧视) in Western communities. Now that parts of their culture have become popular just for fun, they feel their cultural pride is being turned into a joke.
⑤It is good to see closer connections between Chinese culture and the rest of the world. But how long will “Chinamaxxing” last? No one knows. Online trends are often short-lived and fragmented (碎片化的), so they may not change public views in the long run. Still, if people around the world truly value Chinese culture in their own way, it is an active step toward changing their fixed idea.

The Secret Garden
(A summary of Frances Hodgson Burnett’s The Secret Garden)
In this story, Mary Lennox, a spoiled (惯坏的) and selfish 10-year-old girl goes to live with her uncle, Mr. Craven, after her parents pass away. Her uncle has a huge house, but he is seldom there. Mary spends a lot of time alone and gets bored. At night she often hears crying coming from somewhere.
One day, Mary hears about a beautiful garden. It belonged to her uncle’s wife. After she died, the garden became a painful memory for him, so he locked it up. No one has seen it for ten years. One morning, Mary finds an old key. When it unlocks a half-hidden door, she discovers the secret garden inside! Unfortunately, nobody has taken care of the plants, and therefore, much of it is in a bad state.
Later, Mary tells her secret to a new friend, Dickon. The young boy knows a lot about gardening, and they work together to make the garden beautiful again. One night, Mary hears someone crying again and discovers Colin, her cousin. He is unhappy and weak because he has lived alone in a hidden room since his mother’s death. He has not walked for years because he thinks he has an illness. Mary and Dickon tell him stories about the garden and take him secretly to see it.
Over time, Colin grows stronger. The fresh air and beautiful garden are good for him, and he proves that he is not ill when he gets to his feet for the first time in years! The three friends spend time together in the garden and grow happier day by day.
In the end, Mary’s uncle returns home. To his great surprise, he sees Colin walking and running. He also discovers that the secret garden has become as alive and beautiful as it ever was!
