Fish Memory: More Than Seven Seconds
It’s a popular belief that a fish’s memory lasts for only seven seconds. It may seem that they don’t remember what they’ve eaten or where they’ve been, and they don’t recognize you or any of their friends—every moment in their life would be like seeing the world for the first time.
But a new study has found that fish have a much better memory than we used to think. Actually, certain species of fish can even remember events from as long as 12 days ago. In the study, researchers from MacEwan University in Canada trained a kind of fish called African cichlids to go to a certain area of their tank to get food. They then waited for 12 days before putting them back in the tank again. Researchers used computer software to monitor the fish’s movements. They found that after such a long time the fish still went to the same place where they first got food. This showed that they could remember their past experiences.
In fact, scientists had been thinking for a long time that African cichlids might have a good memory. An earlier study showed that they behaved aggressively in front of certain fish, perhaps because they remembered their past “fights”. But until the latest findings, there was no clear evidence before.
Just as a good memory can make our lives easier, it also plays an important part when a fish is trying to live in the wild. “If fish are able to remember a certain area with safe food, they will be able to go back to that area without putting their lives at risk,” lead researcher Trevor Hamilton told Live Science.
For a long time fish were placed far below chimpanzees, dolphins, elephants, monkeys, dogs and mice on the list of smart animals. But this study has given scientists a new understanding of their intelligence.
1. According to the article, people commonly believe that ________.
A. fish don’t recognize any of their friends B. a fish’s memory lasts for only seven minutes
C. fish can only remember part of their past experiences D. fish can remember things that happened long time ago
2. What does the underlined word “monitor” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Create. B. Change. C. Control. D. Check.
3. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A. Only African cichlids have a good memory. B. African cichlids always treat others aggressively.
C. African cichlids may remember things for 12 days. D. African cichlids belonged to the list of smart animals.
4. How can fish benefit most from a good memory?
A. They can remember their enemies and fight. B. They can remember where to get food and live.
C. They can remember their friends and help each other. D. They can remember where to escape when in danger.
5. What is the best title for the passage?
A. Fish Are Not as Smart as Chimpanzees B. The Seven-Second Memory Myth of Fish
C. How to Train Fish to Remember Food D. A Study on African Cichlids’ Behavior
A 2. D 3. C 4. B 5. B
(1)题: 根据第一段“It’s a popular belief that a fish’s memory lasts for only seven seconds…they don’t recognize you or any of their friends—every moment in their life would be like seeing the world for the first time.”
(2)题: 根据第二段“Researchers used computer software to monitor the fish’s movements. They found that after such a long time the fish still went to the same place where they first got food.”
(3)题: 根据第二段“Actually, certain species of fish can even remember events from as long as 12 days ago…They found that after such a long time the fish still went to the same place where they first got food. This showed that they could remember their past experiences.”
(4)题: 根据第四段“‘If fish are able to remember a certain area with safe food, they will be able to go back to that area without putting their lives at risk,’ lead researcher Trevor Hamilton told Live Science.”
Saturday, June 6Sometimes I wonder if the English I’ve learned at school is of any use in real life in English-speaking countries. I finally sent an email to my friend Eric about my doubt. To my surprise, he replied with a few words and lots of photos—street signs, shop boards, and public notices—all from his city. “See if you can understand…” he wrote in his email. So this whole afternoon, I sat at the desk and went through these photos. The first sign reads “Thanks for standing in line while others exit. Keep it up!” From the words and the arrows (箭头), I could easily guess what “exit” means. It must mean “get out”. While others are getting out, we should wait in line. “Keep it up!” might mean “Keep doing it!”. It’s good manners. The second sign says “Dispose of or take your garbage with you. Leaving trash is a NO-GO!” It seemed difficult for me. “Garbage” and “trash” could mean something useless. But how about “Dispose of”? I looked it up in a dictionary. It says “to throw (something) away”. It’s our duty to put rubbish in a bin or take it away. So “Leaving trash is a NO-GO!” was not a problem for me. Everything made sense. Cool!“Neighborhood”, “watch” and “community” were not new to me, but I still failed to understand the last sign. Then I phoned my English teacher. She told me everyone in such a place worked together to keep the area safe.By guessing, using an English-English dictionary and asking for help, I got the meanings of all the photos. I can’t wait to try more.
1. What is the email to Eric mainly about?
A. School life. B. Foreign culture. C. True friendship. D. English learning.
2. Which of the following can take the place of “Leaving trash is a NO-GO!” in the text?
A. You can’t go away! B. You shouldn’t take a bin!
C. You can’t litter here! D. You shouldn’t leave soon!
3. How did the writer get the meaning of the last sign?
A. By calling a teacher. B. By making a guess.
C. By sending an email. D. By using a dictionary.
4. What is the writer most likely to do next?
A. Draw signs for the city. B. Ask Eric for more photos.
C. Make boards for shops. D. Thank neighbors for their help.
D 2. C 3. A 4. B
(1)题: 日记开头提到“Sometimes I wonder if the English I’ve learned at school is of any use in real life...I finally sent an email to my friend Eric about my doubt”,可知给Eric的邮件主要关于英语学习的疑问。
(2)题: 第三段提到“‘Garbage’ and ‘trash’ could mean something useless...It’s our duty to put rubbish in a bin or take it away”,可知“Leaving trash is a NO-GO!”意为“不能在这里扔垃圾”,与“You can’t litter here!”同义。
(3)题: 第四段提到“Then I phoned my English teacher. She told me everyone in such a place worked together to keep the area safe”,说明作者通过打电话请教老师理解了最后一个标识。
(4)题: 最后一段提到“I can’t wait to try more”,结合前文Eric发来标识照片帮助作者学习,可推测作者接下来会向Eric要更多照片。

C. By sending an email. D. By using a dictionary.
4. What is the writer most likely to do next?
