On Monday, I stopped my car in front of my daughter Juliet’s middle school. She jumped in the front seat, feeling down. She asked me to help her study for her science test.
“Dad, I need to memorize a unit about the Reproductive Cycle of Plants. And I can hardly make it.”
“You know, memorizing seems like the best way to study, but in fact you can do better in tests if you work on trying to understand the material.”
Juliet was open to my advice. It was Monday afternoon and we had two nights to study before the test on Wednesday. I suggested a plan. “Tomorrow night, you are going to teach the material to me. Tonight, read the unit. Prepare to teach.”
Asking her to teach me was an unusual idea but I decided to do it. Studies show teaching somebody else is a very useful way to learn. Even if you don’t do the teaching, the act of preparing to teach leads to more learning than just trying your best to memorize the material.
On Tuesday afternoon, Juliet sat down with her science book facing me and said, “Okay, Dad, let’s study.” I wanted her to teach me. But false starts happened. I couldn’t be too hard on her. So instead, we started with me asking her some simple questions. She knew some but not others. When she didn’t know the answers, I encouraged her to check the book.
She started checking things that didn’t make sense. And she was actively trying to test her understanding. I was happy to see it. She wasn’t memorizing. She was trying to make sense of things, which was exactly what I had hoped she would do.
( )56. Why did Juliet feel down?
A.Because she failed her science test.
B. Because she knew nothing about plants.
C. Because she couldn’t follow her teacher.
D. Because she had trouble memorizing a unit.
( )57. In the writer’s opinion, which is the key to the best learning for Juliet?
A. Memorizing. B. Testing. C. Questioning. D. Understanding.
( )58. What does the underlined phrase “make sense” probably mean in the last paragraph?
A. Be interesting. B. Be clear. C. Be stupid. D. Be typical.
( )59. What can we know from the passage?
A.The father was too hard on his daughter.
B. The daughter understood the unit at last.
C. The father gave up letting his daughter teach him.
D. The daughter finally learned the unit by memorizing.
( )60. What’s the best title for the passage?
A.A Creative Father B. An Unexpected Test
C. Learning from Teaching D. Preparing for Teaching
C
Most people hope to have a good memory which helps them succeed in study, work and life. Can memory be improved? Luckily, hundreds of studies in the past 50 years have already given us a definite(确定的) answer.
★. First of all, it is necessary to have a healthy eating habit. Eating more food rich in Vitamin B and Vitamin E helps you have a better memory. Doing exercise can keep your brain alive, too. Proper exercise provides much needed oxygen(氧气) for the brain. Running, riding a bike, swimming and even walking two or three times a week are helpful. Moreover, getting enough sleep is important. Only when your brain gets a good rest, can it work well. The healthier your lifestyle is, the better your memory will become.
Memory skills help you remember things better. Chunking is a way of remembering a piece ofinformation by cutting it into smaller ones. For example, to memorize a ten-digit(数字) telephone number 2127983630, you can divide the digits into three groups: first 212, then 798, and last 3630. This method is far more effective than remembering a string(字符串) of 10 digits. However, memory skills will hardly work if you don’t understand the information. What’s more, only a regular review can make the memory last long. That is why students are always advised to go over what they have learned after one day and then after three days, and then use it as often as possible.
Human brains are like muscles that need nutrition(营养) and exercise to become stronger. If you make a few lifestyle changes and try some memory skills, you can certainly improve your memory.
( )61. How many ways of keeping a healthy lifestyle are mentioned in the passage?
A. Two. B. Three. C. Four. D. Five.
( )62. Which of the following can be put in ★?
A.Getting enough sleep is important
B. Human brains don’t need nutrition or exercise
C. A healthy lifestyle keeps your brain memory active
D. Memory skills are helpful for you to remember things
( )63. Which of the following pictures best shows the “chunking” way to memorize the telephone number 3147983689?
A. 3147983689 B. 314 | 798 | 3689 C. 3147 | 9836 | 89 D. 314798 | 3689
( )64. Why should we review what we’ve learned regularly?
A.To make the memory last long.
B. To show that we are hard-working.
C. To follow our teachers’ advice.
D. To do homework right and finish it early.
( )65. What is the main idea of the passage?
A.Not everyone has a good memory.
B. Memory can be improved in some ways.
C. Memory skills are not difficult to learn.
D. It’s important to have a healthy lifestyle.

I once read a story about a man with an amazing memory. My own memory felt more like a 72 ___________(forget) squirrel, always busy but often losing its nuts when I needed them most.
This feeling became a real problem during our biology class. We had to 73___________ (memory) the whole life cycle of a frog, from egg to tadpole to adult. The list of steps and words seemed endless. My project partner, Leo, noticed my trouble. “Just repeating the words won’t stick,” he said. “We need to make it easy to see.” He suggested we divide the difficult process 74___________ a simple, funny story. He even drew a step-by-step graph that looked like a funny comic, where a tiny egg grew legs and jumped off the page. Turning boring facts into a lively story proved to be a much more 75___________ (effect) way to learn.
On the day of our report, nervousness took me. I often happen to forget things under pressure. As Leo began speaking, my mind 76___________ (go) through a terrible empty moment. That experience 79 ___________(complete) changed my view of memory. I stopped seeing it as a fixed ability and began viewing it as a skill. A good memory isn’t about a magic brain; it’s about finding the right key — a story, a picture, a 80 ___________(feel) — to unlock the information you’ve carefully kept. M: We'll take photos in the morning at the park, then have a family dinner with photos at noon, and finally take night photos by the lake.
W: That's three activities! I can't wait to keep these memories forever.
7. M: Look at this old photo of our family trip to the zoo.
There's a sign behind us.
W: Oh, I see it! What does it say?
M: I remember that the sign told people they couldn't take photos near the rare animals. We almost missed taking this picture!
8. W: Tom, do you remember where you put your favourite toy car when you were little?
M: Oh, I remember clearly that I hid it in a box under my bed, but my mum later moved it to the top shelf.
W: Wait, so where is it now?
M: She said she put it under the chair in the living room so I wouldn't lose it.
9. W: Grandma wants us to visit her old house to talk about our childhood memories. When are we going?
M: She said she's busy on Friday, and we can't go on Saturday because of my piano lesson. So we'll go on Sunday afternoon.
W: Perfect! I can't wait to hear her stories again.
10. M: My favourite family memory is every weekend breakfast with my grandma. She always made a special Wuhan snack for me.
W: Oh, I know! Is it the crispy fried dough stick — youtiao that you love so much?
M: No, guess again. It's a square snack with beans and rice inside, and she'd add a little sugar for me.
W: Oh, it's doupi! That sounds so warm.
11. M: How is your grandma doing these days, Lily?
W: She's okay, but I notice that she often forgets where she put her glasses or what she had for breakfast.

W: Hi, Mike. I have a problem with my English. Can you help me?
M: Of course.
W: I'm good at grammar, but I can't remember new words. Can you give me some advice?
M: No problem. I think you had better write down the new words in a notebook and review them often.
W: OK. What else?
M: Try to memorize five words a day and use them when you see them.
W: How can I use them?
M: Why not join the English corner and chat with the members?
W: Sounds good. Thank you!
听下面一段对话,回答16至18三个小题。
W: Hi, Leo! I read an article about how memory works yesterday. Did you know that we have different types of memory?
M: Yeah! I remember the article too. The first type is short-term memory, right? It only keeps information for a few seconds.
W: Exactly! But how do we move things into long-term memory? I always forget new words.
M: Oh, the article said repeating things helps a lot, like reviewing your words every day. Also, connecting new information to what you already know works too.
W: That makes sense! I also learned that sleep is important for memory. When we sleep, our brains organize the memories we made during the day.
M: Wow, that's why I can remember things better after a good night's sleep! So, what's one thing you'll try to improve your memory?
W: I'll start reviewing my notes before bed every night.
M: Great idea! I'll start using the connection method for my history facts.

W: That's okay.
M: What about you, Cindy? What's your special memory?

Good memory is very important for us. I used to have a big problem: I always forgot new English words and key knowledge points quickly after learning them, which made me fall behind in my studies.
To solve this problem, I found a useful way: repeating and reviewing regularly. Every evening, I spend 10 minutes going over what I have learned that day. This simple habit brings me many advantages. First, it turns my short-term memories into long-term ones, so I can keep knowledge in my mind for a long time. Second, it helps me avoid forgetting what I have learned easily. Third, daily practice makes my brain sharper and more active.
Now, I can study more effectively and have made great progress in all my subjects. I believe this method will help more people improve their memory.
