Have you ever thrown a chessboard when things don’t go your way? Have you ever angrily walked off the football field when your team loses? Whether it’s a chess game or a football match, no one wins every time. We should learn to accept losing.
In fact, many people think that losing can be good for us. For example, Robert Sternberg has found that losing helps you think about what went wrong. If you lose a chess game, you can work out what you need to do differently to win next time. Deborah Cabaniss adds that if you don’t accept that someone else has won, things will become worse. She explains that accepting loss positively helps you move on and makes you feel peaceful inside.
But how can you be a good loser? First, practice with small unhappy moments. For example, the teacher does not ask you to answer the questions when you put up your hand in class. This will help you face difficult feelings bravely when bigger challenges come your way. Preparing what to say also helps. So when someone beats you at a computer game, try saying “Well done” and see how that makes you feel. You will realize how strong you really are. Last but not least, learn from each loss to improve. If your team loses a match, think about what went wrong and make a plan to practice those skills.
Remember: every loss is a step toward becoming a better and stronger person. So, let’s learn to accept losing.
4. How does the writer lead in the topic in Paragraph 1?
A. By telling stories. B. By listing numbers.
C. By asking questions. D. By sharing experiences.
5. Which of the following is Deborah Cabaniss’s opinion?
A. It’s difficult to accept losing at once.
B. Losing a game can help you improve.
C. Accepting losing can make you think.
D. Refusing to accept losing makes things worse.
6. How many suggestions are there on how to be a good loser?
A. Two. B. Three. C. Four. D. Five.
7. According to the passage, which person accepted losing?
A. Linda wanted to prove she should be the winner.
B. David shouted “Nobody cares!” and walked away.
C. Jack said congratulations but refused the next game.
D. Sarah saw other players’ skills and decided to improve.
C
At sunrise, Wind and Thunder looked at the bright, new earth, and it was a good place to live.
Wind pushed out his chest. “This is my earth! I’m so proud of it! I work to keep it tidy and beautiful. I should be proud!”
“You?” Thunder shouted. “I should be proud. I keep the earth right. It’s me, not you—you silly wind!”
Thunder had no interest in hearing Wind talk more, and he didn’t wish to see Wind. He walked away heavily, making crashing and booming noises all the way up to the sky.
When Thunder was far enough, Wind said to himself, “The earth doesn’t need that angry guy. I don’t need him either. I’ll keep this beautiful earth clean and green by myself. I’ll make the grass greener, the flowers brighter, and the trees taller. Let him watch and see!”
So the Wind started blowing. “Grow, grow!” he sang as he blew hard. But no grass, flowers or trees grew. Every day, the earth became more brown and drier. The lakes and small rivers started to get smaller. At last, Wind felt scared. He knew he had to go to the sky to find Thunder.
When he found Thunder, he said, “I was wrong. I can’t take care of the earth alone. Without you, I worked hard. But everywhere I went, I made the earth dry and brown. Will you come down with me to make it better?”
Thunder was happy. He hurried down from the sky with Wind. He made low, angry sounds and loud roars as he went. So the clouds turned dark and rain fell down. In some places, the grass grew tall. In other places, the yucca plants bloomed. Along the river banks, cottonwood trees grew new green leaves. Wind followed Thunder and his rain across the earth. He felt happy again as he blew through the tall grass...
8. How did Thunder feel when he was talking with Wind at first?
A. Angry. B. Nervous. C. Worried. D. Sorry.
9. What happened to the earth after the Wind blew alone for many days?
①No grass, flowers, or trees grew.
②The lakes and rivers became smaller.
③The earth turned brown and very wet.
④The sky became clear and bright again.
A. ①③ B. ②④ C. ①② D. ③④
10. From the story, we can infer (推断) that ________.
A. Wind hasn’t met Thunder before
B. Thunder didn’t want to help Wind
C. Thunder thought Wind blew too hard
D. Wind knew he had made a mistake at last
11. What lesson can you learn from the story?
A. No pain, no gain. B. Never too old to learn.
C. Practice makes perfect. D. Many hands make light work.
D
Every day, we use products, such as super glue or sticky notes, to make our lives easier. But believe it or not, these amazing inventions and others were not the products of many tests but were created completely by accident.
The delicious Coca-Cola is a perfect example. It was first a medicine that didn’t work, but surprisingly became a popular drink around the world. John Pemberton was a pharmacist (药剂师). In 1886, he tried to create a new special drink for patients with headaches by mixing coca leaves and coca nuts. He then added soda (苏打) water, making lots of bubbles. However, he discovered the drink tasted delicious! It was as sweet as candy and made people feel good. He found it was more than medicine and named it Coca-Cola. If John Pemberton hadn’t had an accident, we might never have had Coca-Cola!
Like Coca-Cola, ________. Sometimes, while looking for one thing, a scientist might find something completely different. An unusual result in an experiment might seem like a mistake at first. But a clever and curious scientist will notice it, ask “Why did this happen?”, and run more tests to find the answer. They know that surprises in the lab can mean a new discovery. That’s how a simple accident can turn into a real invention.
It’s true that many great inventions come from careful planning. However, in the history of invention, some accidents were not just lucky events, but proved to be important breakthroughs and led to something magical. Today, many of those “happy accidents” have turned into necessary parts of our daily lives.
So dream big, work hard, and never stop trying. And who knows what wonderful things you might create one day?
12. What did John Pemberton plan to make at first?
A. A popular drink. B. A special medicine.
C. A bottle of soda water. D. A kind of sweet candy.
13. Which of the following can be put in ________ in Paragraph 3?
A. many scientists are not careful at first
B. inventing a new drink takes much time
C. the journey of invention is full of surprises
D. we should learn from mistakes in experiments
14. What does the underlined word “breakthroughs” mean in Paragraph 4?
A. Possible risk. B. Small steps. C. Important developments. D. Useless details.
15. What’s the best title of the passage?
A. The Value of Accidents B. When Planning Meets Accidents
C. The Connections Between Accidents D. How Accidents Lead to Success
