Coffee is a source of inflammation-fighting anti-oxidants (抗氧化剂). Now a new study suggests that adding a dash of milk that contains protein can boost the health benefits of your cup of coffee.
Researchers from the University of Copenhagen in Denmark examined how anti-oxidants called polyphenols (多酚) interacted with amino acids (氨基酸), the building blocks of proteins, and found that combining them has twice the effect on fighting cellular inflammation (细胞炎症) as polyphenols alone.
Past studies suggest some polyphenols can prevent and slow the oxidation of healthy chemicals and protect our bodies from disease. They are thought to do this in part by controlling inflammation, a complex immune response involving macrophages that release several inflammatory mediators.
In order to confirm the result, the researchers successfully showed in another new study that combining polyphenols with proteins in milky coffee can form adducts (加合物). And they also used RNA-sequencing to study the immune-regulating effects. As they expected, the polyphenols alone did prevent inflammatory responses. But when they were combined with amino acid found in milk proteins, their anti-inflammatory effects received a boost.
“It is interesting to have now observed the anti-inflammatory effect in cell experiments. So, the next step will be to study the effects in animals,” says immunologist and senior author. Andrew Williams. Further research is needed to figure out why and what these results mean practically for human health. This study only examined how a single type of immune mediator (免疫介质) reacts to coffee-like chemicals in a laboratory setting.
“Our results can be used as an important reference in applications of future functional food or medicinal products that aim to modulate metabolic, neurological, or immune-related diseases,” the researchers conclude in their paper.
19.How does polyphenols prevent and slow the oxidation?
A.Release several inflammatory mediators.
B.React with proteins in milky coffee.
C.Immune mediator reacts to coffee-like chemicals.
D.Control inflammation partially.
20.How did the researchers prove their findings?
A.By comparison. B.By quotation.
C.By giving examples. D.By listing data.
21.What can we conclude from the last 2 paragraphs?
A.Researchers have new findings on the effects in animals.
B.Whether these results mean practically for human health has been decided.
C.The results throw light on the treatment of certain related diseases.
D.More researchers will participate in the study.
22.What is the main idea of the text?
A.How polyphenols interacted with amino acids.
B.Combined with milk, the health effects of coffee received a boost.
C.Polyphenols regulate the oxidation to protect our bodies from disease.

As humans, we’ve built connections and bonds with certain genres (体裁) or musical styles as a way to express ourselves. Music is a powerful tool to access information about ourselves. A recent study is offering new insight into how our favorite tunes are linked to our personalities.
The study spanning six continents with more than 350, 000 participants showed that personality types are linked with certain musical preferences. During the study, people from more than 50 countries self-reported their enjoyment of 23 different music genres while also completing a personality questionnaire. The researchers also had the participants listen to brief clips of music from 16 different genres of Western music and rank them.
Songs like Ed Sheeran’s Shivers appeal to extroverts (性格外向者), while adorable people would be happy listening to What’s Going On by Marvin Gaye. Meanwhile, open people tend to enjoy Nina Simone or David Bowie’s classic Space Oddity. And all of these types of songs have appeal that cross national borders, according to the study.
“ We were surprised at just how much these patterns between music and personality were alike across the globe, ” said study author David Greenberg, honorary research associate at the University of Cambridge, in a statement.
“ People may be divided by geography, language and culture, but if an extrovert in one part of the world likes the same music as extroverts elsewhere, that suggests that music could be a very powerful bridge. Music helps people to understand one another and find common ground. ”
The researchers acknowledge that musical taste isn’t set in stone and can change. But the study provides a foundation for understanding how music can cross other social divisions and bring people together.
23.What did participants do during the study?
A.They travelled 50 countries. B.They enjoyed 39 music clips.
C.They filled in a questionnaire. D.They ranked personality types.
24.Who is more likely to be popular with lovely people?
A.Ed Sheeran. B.Marvin Gaye. C.Nina Simone. D.David Bowie.
25.Which of the following will David Greenberg agree with?
A.Culture affects musical taste. B.Geography decides music genres.
C.Music promotes communication. D.Personality equals music patterns.

A large part of the world’s total sugar supply comes from beets. Most markets carry this sugar, but it may not always be clearly labeled. You may think the white sugar you just bought is made from sugarcane. 27
Beets have been an important crop in human agriculture for centuries, with evidence of their planting dating back to ancient civilizations in Europe. However, it was not until the16th century that beets’ potential as a source of sugar was realized. 28 Later, they slowly spread to America.
One key advantage of using beets for sugar is that compared to sugarcane, beets can be planted in cooler regions. 29 Beet sugar is also easier to produce. just requiring very basic processing. So in consideration of the cost- effective characteristics, beets are an attractive alternative to sugarcane.
30 The initial step involves washing and cutting up the beets, followed by passing them through a machine that forces hot water past the beet pieces. The resulting juice is then combined with liquids squeezed from the beets. The mixture is then heated, leading to a thick, sweet liquid. Finally, the liquid is further processed to obtain beet sugar, which is chemically nearly identical to sugarcane sugar.
The quantities of beet sugar and sugarcane sugar can be used equally in baking recipes. 31 While some people are able to tell a difference, many others can’t tell whether a baked treat has been made with beet sugar or sugarcane sugar. So beet sugar sometimes can replace sugarcane sugar in a baking recipe.
A.Beets can be easily processed.
B.But its source may be actually beets.
C.The flavour of baked goods is quite similar.
D.Let’s look at how exactly to make beet sugar.
E.In most cases, people tend to eat sugarcane sugar.
F.Besides, beets are tougher and able to grow on land of poor quality.
G.Therefore, beet sugar processing plants began to be built in Europe.

四、阅读回答问题
Passage1
Sea shanties are work songs created and sung by sailors (水手). Using a sea shanty is believed to have started to fight against the boring nature of days on the ships and have helped them work smoothly aboard throughout the months-long journeys.
These songs were sung when the sailors worked. Interestingly, the shanties tell much more. They mirror a region’s past. Different shanties reflect different kinds of onboard work taken on by sailors in those times.
The sea shanties’ rhythms (韵律) helped sailors work well together. Thus, these work songs focused on the rhythm and beat, allowing every sailor to sing and be part of the group.
Similarly, it wasn’t expected of the sailors to have excellent singing skills, as the only purpose of these songs was to help the sailors work more orderly.
The benefits of the sea shanties are obvious. According to professor Gerry Smyth, the sea shanties create a sense of community and purpose among sailors of sea shipment in the 1700s and the 1800s. The professor has also authored the sailor song: The Shanties and Ballads of the High Seas. He argues that they were created to match the tasks the sailors regularly did. For example, if the ships were being pulled, the shanty would be about the physical effort being put in. Everyone would pull to the rhythm of the song.

Passage2
阅读下面短文,根据题目要求用英语回答问题。请在答题卡指定区域作答。
Many scientists believe our love of sugar may actually be an addiction. When we eat or drink sugary foods, the sugar enters our blood and affects parts of our brain that make us feel good. Then the good feeling goes away, leaving us wanting more. All tasty foods do this, but sugar has a particularly strong effect. In this way, it is in fact an addictive drug, one that doctors suggest we all cut down on.
“It seems like every time I study an illness and search for the first cause, I find my way back to sugar,” says scientist Richard Johnson. One-third of adults worldwide have high blood pressure, and up to 347 million have diabetes (糖尿病). Why? “Sugar, we believe is one of the culprits, if not the major reason,” says Johnson.
Our bodies are designed to survive on very little sugar. Early humans often had very little food, so our bodies learned to be very efficient in storing sugar as fat. In this way, we had energy stored for when there was no food. But today, most people have more than enough. So the very thing that once saved us may now be killing us.
So what is the solution? It’s obvious that we need to eat less sugar. The trouble is, in today’s world, it’s extremely difficult to avoid. From breakfast cereals (谷物) to after-dinner desserts, our foods are increasingly filled with it.
But there are those who are fighting back against sugar. Many schools are replacing sugary desserts with healthier food like fruit. Other schools are growing their own food in gardens, or building facilities (设施) like walking tracks so students and others in the community can exercise.
37.What is one of the reasons for high blood pressure?
____________________________________________________________________________________________
38.Why did our bodies learn to store sugar as fat?
____________________________________________________________________________________________
39.Please decide which part is false in the following statement, then underline it and explain why.
—The sugar enters our blood and affects parts of our brain that make us feel good, so we should eat more in daily life.
____________________________________________________________________________________________
40.In your daily life, how do you fight against sugar? (In about 40 words)
____________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】37.Sugar. 38.Because we can have energy stored for when there is no food. 39.The sugar enters our blood and affects parts of our brain that make us feel good, so we should eat more in daily life.
Because most people have more than enough sugar that may be killing us. Besides, sugar is one of the culprits of high blood pressure 40.I fight against sugar by replacing sugary desserts with healthier food like fruit and vegetables. I also grow my own food in gardens and keep exercising to maintain my sugar level in normal.
【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了许多科学家认为我们对糖的热爱实际上可能是一种上瘾,糖能够补充人体的能量,但同时也会引发一些疾病。
【详解】37.考查细节理解。根据文章第二段“One-third of adults worldwide have high blood pressure, and up to 347 million have diabetes. Why? “Sugar, we believe is one of the culprits, if not the major reason,” says Johnson.(全世界有三分之一的成年人患有高血压,多达3.47亿人患有糖尿病。为什么?“我们认为,糖是罪魁祸首之一,如果不是主要原因的话,”约翰逊说)”可知,糖是高血压的原因之一。故答案为Sugar.
38.考查细节理解。根据文章第三段“Early humans often had very little food, so our bodies learned to be very efficient in storing sugar as fat. In this way, we had energy stored for when there was no food (早期人类的食物通常很少,所以我们的身体学会了以脂肪的形式有效地储存糖分。这样,我们就储存了能量,以备没有食物时使用)”可知,我们的身体学会将糖储存为脂肪,因为我们可以在没有食物的情况下储存能量。故答案为Because we can have energy stored for when there is no food.
39.考查细节理解。根据文章第一段“In this way, it is in fact an addictive drug, one that doctors suggest we all cut down on.(这样看来,它实际上是一种上瘾的药物,医生建议我们都要减少使用)”以及第三段“But today, most people have more than enough. So the very thing that once saved us may now be killing us. (但今天,大多数人拥有的已经绰绰有余了。所以,曾经拯救我们的东西现在可能正在杀死我们)”可知,我们不应该在日常生活中多吃糖。故答案为The sugar enters our blood and affects parts of our brain that make us feel good, so we should eat more in daily life. Because most people have more than enough sugar that may be killing us. Besides, sugar is one of the culprits of high blood pressure.
40.开放性试题。根据文章最后一段“Many schools are replacing sugary desserts with healthier food like fruit.

26.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.What Determines Our Personality B.Why Music Brings People Together
C.What Music Reveals about Our Moods D.How Music Reflects Our Preferences
