Do you ever get to the train station and realize you forgot to bring something to read? Yes, we all have our phones, but many of us still like to go old school and read something printed.
Well, there’s a kiosk (小亭) for that. In the San Francisco Bay Area, at least.
“You enter the fare gates (检票口) and you’ll see a kiosk that is lit up and it tells you can get a one-minute, a three-minute, or a five-minute story,” says Alicia Trost, the chief communications officer for the San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit — known as BART. “You choose which length you want and it gives you a receipt-like short story.”
It’s that simple. Riders have printed nearly 20,000 short stories and poems since the program was launched last March. Some are classic short stories, and some are new original works.
Trost also wants to introduce local writers to local riders. “We wanted to do something where we do a call to artists in the Bay Area to submit stories for a contest,” Trost says. “And as of right now, we’ve received about 120 submissions. The winning stories would go into our kiosk and then you would be a published artist.”
Ridership on transit (交通) systems across the country has been down the past half century, so could short stories save transit?
Trost thinks so.
“At the end of the day all transit agencies right now are doing everything they can to improve the rider experience. So I absolutely think we will get more riders just because of short stories,” she says.
And you’ll never be without something to read.
24. Why did BART start the kiosk program?
A. To promote the local culture. B. To discourage phone use.
C. To meet passengers’ needs. D. To reduce its running costs.
25. How are the stories categorized in the kiosk?
A. By popularity. B. By length.
C. By theme. D. By language.
26. What has Trost been doing recently?
A. Organizing a story contest. B. Doing a survey of customers.
C. Choosing a print publisher. D. Conducting interviews with artists.
27. What is Trost’s opinion about BART’s future?
A. It will close down. B. Its profits will decline.
C. It will expand nationwide. D. Its ridership will increase.

The eight-hour sleep rule has been widely accepted as a golden standard for healthy sleep since 1817. It originated from a social slogan advocating equal time for work, entertainment and rest, rather than strict scientific experiments. Modern research has overturned this long-held public belief.
It is universally acknowledged that insufficient sleep damages physical and mental health. Yet studies confirm that excessive sleep is also harmful, forming a U-shaped relationship between sleep duration and health. Earlier studies in 2015 put forward general sleep ranges for different age groups, but failed to consider individual differences.
A groundbreaking study published in Nature updated sleep standards by introducing biological clock data. Based on half a million adult samples, the research found gender differences in ideal sleep length. Women function best with 6.5 to 7.8 hours of sleep per night, while men’s ideal range is 6.4 to 7.7 hours. Slight individual differences also exist due to physical conditions.
Experts remind the public not to blindly stick to fixed sleep hours. Sleep quality, continuity and regularity matter more than fixed duration. Ironically, anxiety about failing to meet the eight-hour standard itself causes insomnia. Surveys show most people lose sleep over unnecessary worry about sleep length.
The true standard of healthy sleep is waking up refreshed and energetic. Instead of mechanically counting hours, people should follow their physical signals and develop personalized sleep habits.
28. Where did the eight-hour sleep standard come from?
A. Scientific experiments in 2015
B. Long-term medical observation
C. Biological clock research data
D. A social equality slogan
29. The underlined word “groundbreaking” in Paragraph 3 means ______.
A. conventional B. meaningless C. revolutionary D. complex
30. What can we infer from Paragraph 4?
A. Fixed sleep hours guarantee better sleep quality.
B. Worrying about sleep length may cause sleep problems.
C. Most people can strictly follow the eight-hour rule.
D. Sleep duration is the only standard for healthy sleep.
31. What is the author’s purpose of writing the text?
A. To introduce the history of sleep research.
B. To advocate personalized healthy sleep habits.
C. To prove long sleep is better than short sleep.
D. To criticize unscientific medical standards.

Peru is famously known as the “land of the Incas”. A trip to Peru had been on my wish list for quite a while. It was finally time for me to visit the country.
My first day started in Lima, the capital of Peru. I met with the G Adventures representative(代表) of the tour here. G Adventures is an organization that helps you to connect with other like-minded people in small group-based travel adventures. They played a big part in helping to make Peru an unforgettable experience for me! In Lima, my representative discussed the plan for my tour, and I also had the chance to explore Lima in my own time, with many activities, including a city tour, show, biking tour, and more.
Day Two had me taking a flight from Lima to Cusco. Many people visit Cusco for shopping but for me, the main reason for spending a day or two in Cusco was to adapt to the altitude(海拔). As I’d decided to reach the wonder of Machu Picchu, adaptation had become important to avoiding altitude sickness. I was happy to spend a day exploring Cusco. Cusco was once the capital of the Inca Empire. Today, it’s famous for its artists, paintings, clothing and traditional instruments. There’s something for everyone in this city.
The day finally came! Day Three had me enjoying a lovely guided visit to Machu Picchu at sunrise. I had free time to explore the city on my own as well as with my guide. There was a lot to take in! I had to stop for a moment and felt the energy of such an ancient city. The history here is unbelievable and I will never forget my time here for as long as I live!
32.What is the author’s attitude to G Adventures?
A. Doubtful. B. Satisfied. C. Uninterested. D. Hopeful.
33.Why did the author stay in Cusco?
A. To go shopping. B. To find a local guide.
C. To get used to the high altitude. D. To do research on the Inca Empire.
34.How did the author feel when traveling around Machu Picchu?
A. Full of excitement. B. Out of luck. C. Lost in doubt. D. Deep in regret.
35.What is the best title for the text?
A. My love of traveling B. My wonderful trip to Peru
C. Peru: the “land of the Incas” D. Traveling: the future of Peru

I’m so delighted to hear from you and know that you are going to Beijing with me during the holidays. I’m writing to share the travel plans with you.
On the first day we will visit the Great Wall and a tourist bus will take us there directly. Since you are interested in Chinese culture, we can spend the next day at the Palace Museum so that you can learn about the life of the ancient Chinese emperors. Besides, the Summer Palace is a place we must go to on the last day and if time allows, we can taste some well-known Beijing Roast Duck. Considering it’s the peak tourist season, I will book rooms online in advance. I’m sure we’ll enjoy each other’s company.
I can’t wait for the holidays to come and meet you.
Yours,
Li Hua
