The name London gave Oliver an idea. Nobody could ever find him there! It was a good place for brave boys, and it would be the best place for him.
He walked twenty miles that day. The only thing he had to eat was his piece of bread and some water which he begged (乞讨) from houses near the road. On the first night, he slept under a tree, feeling lonely, cold and hungry. Travelers on the road refused to give him money and they said he was a lazy young boy. Farmers sent their dogs to run after him. Only two people were kind enough to feed him: an old woman and a gate-keeper on the road.
Early on the seventh morning of his journey, Oliver finally reached the little town of Barnet, just outside London. He noticed that a boy, who had passed him a few minutes before, came back and looked at him carefully. After a long time, the boy walked to Oliver. The boy was about Oliver’s age. He had a dirty, common boy’s face, but he behaved like an adult. He was short for his age and had little, sharp, ugly eyes. He wore a man’s coat which reached almost down to his feet.
“Hello! What’s the matter then?” the boy asked.
“I’m very tired and hungry. I want to go to London, but walking for a week exhausts me.” answered Oliver, almost crying.
“I didn’t get much money, but don’t worry. I can buy you some food. And I will be in London tonight. I know a very nice old gentleman there who’ll let you live in his place and not even ask you for money. Do you want to go with me?” the boy asked.
Oliver was deeply thankful for this offer and talked for a long time with his new friend. His name was Jack Dawkins, but he was usually called “The Artful Dodger.” “Artful” because he was very clever at getting what he wanted, and “Dodger” because he was very good at not getting caught when he did something wrong. When he heard this, Oliver felt very doubtful (怀疑的). However, he wanted to meet the kind old gentleman in London, who would help him. After that, he could decide whether to continue the friendship with the Artful Dodger.

Playing a musical instrument is not only fun, but it might also be helpful to our brains (脑)! Scientists are doing a study with people aged 40 and older to see how playing music affects brain health. They have looked at results from over 1,000 adults and found that playing an instrument or singing can improve their memory and cognitive speed
Anne Corbett, a researcher from the University of Exeter, says that being musical could help keep our brains strong as we get older. She believes musical education is important and we should let older adults return to music in later life.
Stuart Douglas, a 78-year-old who plays the accordion, shared his story. He learned to play the accordion as a boy and has been playing it all his life. He now performs with a band. He sees how music helps people with memory problems and believes that continuing with music into older age plays an important role in keeping brains healthy.
The idea for this study came from Gaia Vetere, a medical student who loves playing the piano. “I am very interested in researching the relationship between music and cognition. Doing the study is challenging, but I have learned a lot and it’s truly a meaningful experience,” she said.
9. According to Anne Corbett, what should older adults do to keep their brains strong?
A. Get into music. B. Do volunteer work.
C. Make more friends. D. Pick up new hobbies.
10. How does the writer show the importance of music in Paragraph 3?
A. He describes a scene. B. He gives an example.
C. He shows some numbers. D. He answers some questions.
11. What do we know about Gaia Vetere?
A. She is a music teacher.
B. She has memory problems.
C. She wishes to help older adults by teaching them music.
D. She studies the relationship between music and cognition.
12. What can we learn from the study?
A. Music learning must start young.
B. Music learning is easier for older people.
C. Playing music has little to do with cognition.
D. Playing music improves memory in older adults.

Hey there! Imagine this: you get a video call from your best friend, who looks and sounds exactly like your friend, and is worriedly asking you for money. But wait... is it really them?
Maybe it’s an AI scam (诈骗). AI scams happen when scammers use AI to copy people’s voices, create fake (假的) videos called “deepfakes”, and trick people into giving away their money or personal information.
Here are some simple, practical ways to protect yourself from AI scams.
Set up a secret family password with your family and close friends. You can pick a silly but easy-to-remember phrase, such as “dancing orange”. If you get a suspicious (可疑的) request, ask for the password first. A real family member or friend will know it, but a fake AI never will.
Second, never reply or send money right away to unexpected calls or messages. Contact the person through a trusted phone number or app, or ask your parents or teachers for help at once.
Also, AI is not perfect. Fake photos or videos often have small mistakes, like strange hands or unnaturally smooth skin. Text messages that sound too perfect or use many strange emojis are also warning signs.
Moreover, never share too much personal information online, as AI needs it to copy your voice or appearance. Talk about AI scams with your family and friends to help everyone stay safe.
Remember, seeing or hearing is not always believing in the AI age. Always stop, think and check before trusting. Stay sharp and stay safe.
13. Why should we never share too much personal information online?
A. Because it must hurt our family members.
B. Because it can cause some health problems.
C. Because it may help AI scammers copy us.
D. Because it will make our phones run slowly.
14. What do scammers use AI to do in AI scams?
A. To copy people’s voices to make calls.
B. To make interesting short videos for great fun.
C. To copy voices and create fake “deepfake” videos.
D. To teach people how to use AI technology correctly.
15. Which has the same meaning as the underlined word “sharp”?
sharp /ʃɑːp/ adj.
A. The sharp knife cut the bread easily.
B. You must stay sharp when you get strange online messages.
C. The company suffered a sharp fall in sales this month.
D. His sharp words made her feel sad.
16. According to the passage, which is the best family password against AI scams?
A. “What color is the apple?” “Blue.”
B. “Where does the sun rise?” “In the east.”
C. “How is the weather?” “It’s Sunny.”
D. “When do flowers come out?” “In spring.”

Lu Xun (1881-1936) was one of the most important writers in modern China. His real name was Zhou Shuren, and he was born in Shaoxing, Zhejiang Province.
When Lu Xun was young, his father was ill for a long time. They went to many traditional Chinese doctors, but none could save his life. In 1896, his father passed away. This made Lu Xun believe that Chinese medicine was not effective, so he decided to go to Japan to study Western medicine. He wanted to become a doctor and save more patients like his father. However, during his time in Japan, he saw something that changed his life forever. He realized that the Chinese people’s spirit was weak, as well as their bodies. He believed that writing could wake (唤醒) people up and change their thoughts. So, he made a life-changing decision: he gave up medicine and became a writer.
Lu Xun’s works are full of truth and courage. His most famous works include Diary of a Madman, The True Story of Ah Q, and Kong Yiji. In these stories, he criticized (批判) the old society and showed deep love for his country and people. His writing style is simple but powerful. Even today, his words still encourage readers.
Lu Xun spent his whole life helping his country with his pen. Reading his works helps us understand China’s history and learn to be brave and responsible. His stories remind us to think deeply and care for our country. Lu Xun’s spirit lives on in every page of his works.

文章第二段中“On the first night, he slept under a tree, feeling lonely, cold and hungry. Travelers on the road refused to give him money and they said he was a lazy young boy. Farmers sent their dogs to run after him.”
文章第五段中“I’m very tired and hungry. I want to go to London, but walking for a week exhausts me.”
根据文章的叙述顺序,第二段先提及“On the first night, he slept under a tree”,对应图④中奥利弗在树下休息的场景;接着提到“Farmers sent their dogs to run after him.”,对应图①中狗追赶奥利弗的场景;第三段提到“After a long time, the boy walked to Oliver.”,对应图②中男孩走向奥利弗的场景;随后男孩主动搭话,两人交谈,对应图③中两人面对面交流的场景。

A 10. B 11. D 12. D

第2段“She believes musical education is important and we should let older adults return to music in later life.”
根据第3段“Stuart Douglas, a 78-year-old who plays the accordion, shared his story.”
根据第4段“I am very interested in researching the relationship between music and cognition.”
通读全文,尤其根据第1段“They have looked at results from over 1,000 adults and found that playing an instrument or singing can improve their memory and cognitive speed (认知速度).”

C 14. C 15. B 16. A
根据文章倒数第二段“never share too much personal information online, as AI needs it to copy your voice or appearance"可知,不要分享太多个人信息,因为AI需要这些信息来复制你的声音或外貌,从而实施诈骗。
根据文章第二段“AI scams happen when scammers use AI to copy people’s voices, create fake (假的) videos called ‘deepfakes’ ”可知,诈骗者利用AI复制人们的声音并制作名为“深度伪造”的虚假视频。
