America is a mobile society. Friendships between Americans can be close and real, yet disappear (消失) soon. They don’t feel hurt. If the same two people meet again, even years later, they pick up the friendship. This can be quite difficult for us Chinese to understand, because friendships between us develop (发展) more slowly but then may become lifelong feelings, spreading sometimes deeply into both families.
There is another difficult point for us Chinese to understand. Americans treat friends warmly in their personal (私人的) everyday lives, but they don’t show their politeness to them if it needs a lot of time. But in China, we are usually __▲__. Sometimes,we, as hosts (主人), will wait at airports (机场) even in the middle of the night to meet a friend. We may take days off from our work to act as guides to our friends. The Americans, however, cannot manage the time to do a lot with a visitor outside their everyday plans. They will probably expect (期盼) the visitors to get themselves from the airport to the hotel by bus. And they expect that the visitor will phone them from there. Once the visitors get to their homes, the welcome will be full, warm and real.
For the Americans, it is often thought more friendly to invite a friend to their home than to restaurants, except for (除了) business matters. Americans are ready to receive us foreigners at their homes, share their holidays and their home life. So accept their hospitality (好客) at home and enjoy your visit in America!

A. Americans are always generous (大方的) with their time.

So far, Amy hadn’t given any useful advice—after all, she was totally new to this town.
Luckily, no one seemed to care about it.
After the Blue Team left the park, they worked out the first two clues (线索) and went to the post office. Now they were in front of the cinema
Henry read aloud the third clue: Go to our town founder’s (建立者的) last resting place.
“To the cemetery (基地),” Cindy said.
“No, wait!” Amy said. “I’ve read about it. The founder was buried (埋) near the library.”
“Good job! That will save a lot of time,” Cindy smiled at Amy.
“We still need to hurry,” Tyler said, pointing to the Yellow Team coming near.
“I know a shortcut!” Henry said. “Follow me!” No one moved. Henry said, “You know I’m always running late. I know every shortcut in town.” The others finally agreed.
After a few turns, and they were there! This time Amy read the clue aloud: Now go to the place where the football is running around!
“The football centre!” They called out together and started to run. Now they’d got the final clue: Look where you’ve been, see where you are. Use your map and you’ll be a star!
Looking closely at the map, everyone thought hard. “Aha! A star!” Cindy suddenly shouted. She quickly took out a pencil, and drew lines on the map. Everyone understood.
They began running back to where they started. They were closer and closer, and finally crossed the finish line—just one stop behind the Red Team!
“So...close...” Tyler made a face, and they all laughed together. “Nice job, new girl,” Cindy gave Amy a high-five. “That was really fun,” said Henry. “I hope we’ll be on the same team soon,” “Me too,” Amy agreed, smiling.
