In our fast-paced world, speed is often mistaken for success. We admire those who achieve their goals rapidly, yet we don’t pay much attention to those who take longer to reach the same destination. A recent university graduate, Yu Yifan, has started a scholarship (奖学金) programme to challenge this way of thinking.
Yu Yifan, who just graduated from Sichuan University, gave 30,000 yuan to his school in November to create a scholarship. This scholarship is not for the top students, but for those who are not in the top 25 percent of their class. Yu wants to help students who are not doing so well now but are working hard to get better.
This scholarship helps us look at education in a new way. It’s not just about getting good grades, but also about the journey of learning. As the American thinker Mortimer J. Adler said, “The purpose of learning is growth.” Because of different learning methods and situations, some students learn fast, while some learn slowly, but all students can grow if they keep trying. Efforts and failures are a natural part of learning, helping students think clearly, solve problems and develop as successful students.
Nowadays, we often call students “winners” or “losers” based on their results. The best students get a lot of praise, but the hard work of slower students is not seen. Yu himself recalled feeling lost and anxious when he was falling behind. Support from his teacher helped him get back his confidence.
Yu’s scholarship serves as more than financial help, but it is an act of understanding. Each step forward, no matter how small, is a step towards success.
39.What is the main purpose of Yu Yifan’s scholarship?
A.To give money to the fastest achievers. B.To support students who are in the top 25 percent.
C.To help students who are working hard to improve. D.To encourage students to focus on the final results.
40.How did Yu Yifan’s teacher help him?
A.By giving him financial support. B.By taking his failures seriously.
C.By helping him feel confident again. D.By showing him that grades matter.
41.What’s the writer’s opinion of learning?
A.Learning is valuable if it leads to success. B.Learning is a process of personal growth.
C.Learning is important for the fastest learners. D.Learning helps to understand education better.
42.What’s the best title for the passage?
A.Winners or Losers B.The Secret of Success
C.A Graduate’s Special Programme D.A New Method to Scholarship

Do you know that many local languages are disappearing? Some languages are like old songs that nobody sings anymore. Many kids can’t speak their grandparents’ language at all. A girl named Danielle Boyer wants to change that. She created SkoBot, a small robot that can speak endangered (濒危的) languages.
SkoBots look like cute animals. Some wear little hats or bright tutus (芭蕾舞裙). They are made from recycled materials (可循环使用的材料), so they are good for the Earth. A SkoBot sits on a kid’s shoulder like a little friend. Students can build the robots themselves with simple tools. This helps them get hands-on experience (动手实践经验) in a fun way.
Once the robot is turned on, the magic begins. It answers at once when you talk to it. The robot uses recordings made by teachers, so the language sounds real. It can also nod, wave, and move its body. This makes children feel like they are talking to a real person. SkoBots do not need the Internet, so kids in far away places can use them, too.
Boyer made her first robot when she was 17. A few years later, she created SkoBot to help save her language. Many groups are taking action, too. Some teach languages using fun apps and games. Together, these projects give endangered languages a chance to survive.
43.What did Danielle Boyer do?
A.She played with cute animals.
B.She enjoyed singing old songs.
C.She spoke her grandparents’ language daily.
D.She invented a robot to save endangered languages.
44.How do students feel when they build the robots?
A.Simple. B.Fun. C.Hard. D.Angry.
45.Why does the language from the robot sound real?
A.Because the robot is made by simple tools.
B.Because the robot has something special in it.
C.Because the robot is connected with the Internet.
D.Because the robot uses recordings made by teachers.
46.What’s the best title for the text?
A.How a Little Robot Saves Languages
B.Disappearing Languages
C.Chances to Get Hands-on Experiences
D.How SkoBot works

①Have you ever watched a silent film and tried to guess what the characters were saying? Body language, like facial expressions, is the mirror of a person’s feelings. It helps us communicate without saying much at all.
②Sometimes we can share the common sense from culture to culture. Turning red-faced shows one’s anger, shock or excitement. The wide eyes with a half-opened mouth mean surprise. Also, some other body movements can express the same meanings in different cultures. For example, being back in one’s seat and yawning at a talk shows that people are not interested, and looking at the watch from time to time in a conversation means people have something to do in a hurry.
③However, not all body language can show the same meanings in different cultures. What holds true for Indians may not be the same in Africa. First of all, in some cultures, people respect and encourage the direct eye contact. In English, there is a saying, “Don’t trust anyone who won’t look you in the eye.” In many countries, direct eye contact between two people is considered important. According to most Western cultures, if a person looks directly at you, it is a sign that the person is honest and sincere and even can be trusted. While many cultures believe that direct eye contact from a child to an adult is an act of respect.
④The OK sign, which is commonly used in many cultures, also has different meanings across the cultures. It means agreement in North American culture. But to French, it means “zero” or “valueless”, not “fine” or “OK”. Touching is another example. At times, saying hello could turn into a disaster if one does not consider the use of touch in another culture. A general and accepted way of saying “Hello” in Western culture is a simple handshake. A great deal of importance has been placed on how one should shake hands.
⑤So, the next time you decide to travel to another country, besides looking up places to visit, a quick search or a book can guide you on how to use proper body language to better communicate with the local people, and avoid being impolite to them during your stay!
47.What does the underlined word “It” in Paragraph 1 refer to?
A.A silent film. B.The mirror.
C.Body language. D.A person’s feeling.
48.According to the passage, which one has the similar meaning from culture to culture?
A.Turning red-faced. B.Direct eye contact.
C.The OK sign. D.A simple handshake.
49.Which of the following best shows the structure (结构) of the passage?
A. B. C. D.
50.Which of the following is the best title for the passage?
A.Body language is more important
B.Body language helps you go travelling
C.Body language changes among cultures
D.Body language influences communication

Vaughn Smith from England speaks eight languages fluently (流利地). And he can actually hold long conversations in 24 languages. How does he do it? Well, Vaughn’s memory is probably better than most people’s. But he also has some good ways of learning languages. 51
Vaughn suggests finding target (目标) language speakers. For example, Vaughn often goes for a walk in London, the city he lives in, and simply talks to tourists he meets—using their language. 52 Another tip is to “mix things up”. For example, you can listen to online radio in your target language, or watch movies. But one of his favorite ways is reading “bilingual (双语的)” short stories that have the target language together with an English translation. 53 Vaughn says daily practice is important, even a little. 54 However, he says it’s important not to cram (塞) too much into one day. He thinks reading a word list 10 times a day works better than reading it once for hours.
However, Vaughn says the most important thing is “the desire (欲望) to learn”. 55 And his love of languages is one of the big reasons he’s so good at learning them.
A.It helps him to connect with people.
B.He has been kind enough to share them with us.
C.In this way, he practices his own target languages!
D.He advises using flash cards for memorizing new words.
E.Language learning is not so difficult for him.
F.For Vaughn, language learning is fun.
G.The stories teach him new words and how to put sentences together.

As a language learner, it’s of great importance to use a dictionary. With the rapid development of the Internet, many websites and apps offer us information about the language we are learning, and more and more students prefer online dictionaries. They are popular with people of all age groups. However, some people still believe paper dictionaries are great choices for us. They think paper dictionaries are more believable.
Which do you prefer to use: a paper dictionary or an online dictionary?
Ruby
Roy
My paper dictionary is great company (陪伴) for me. Whenever I can’t figure out (推断) the meaning of a new word, I can learn it well by understanding the notes and the example sentences in the paper dictionary.
I don’t like carrying a heavy dictionary wherever I go. It’s really convenient to learn a language with the help of an online dictionary. You don’t need to spend much time looking up what you need. Using an online dictionary makes you a more effective learner.
Mike
Pam
If you are not good at memorizing English words, you can look up their meanings online very soon. It helps you finish reading English articles more smoothly (流畅地). If you are a good language learner, you can always learn more in a shorter time with an online dictionary, which saves you a lot of time.
I prefer to look up something in the paper dictionary. The explanations (解释) of the words are so clear that I can understand the sentences better soon. I don’t think the online dictionary is believable. Many incorrect usages can confuse (使人迷惑) us.
Chart
It’s helpful to learn more and more quickly with a dictionary, whether (无论) you use a paper dictionary or an e-dictionary.
56.Why do some people still like to use paper dictionaries?
57.Who prefer(s) to use an online dictionary according to Chart?
58.How does Ruby learn English with the help of a dictionary?
59.What helps Pam understand the sentences better?

If you are a good language learner, you can always learn more in a shorter time with an online dictionary, which saves you a lot of time.

【解析】本文介绍了动物通过信号、声音传递信息的基础交流方式,对比阐述了人类语言以文字为核心的独特交流功能,同时说明语言会随时间不断演变,无人使用的语言最终会走向消亡。
21.句意:当一只蜜蜂找到食物时,它会返回自己的巢穴。
根据后文“for a bee to tell the other bees”的原文内容线索,此处明确指向蜜蜂的行为。
根据后文“it is not difficult to tell if a dog is angry... it barks”的吠叫线索,此处核心动作是发出声音。
根据后文“We make sounds like "oh" to show how we feel”的举例,说明人类和动物一样会用声音表达感受,属于相同的方式。funny“有趣的”、serious“严肃的”、strange“奇怪的”均无法呼应前文动物用声音表达情绪的共性。
28.句意:人类拥有语言。
根据后文“We can use words to... with each other”的主语指代线索,此处明确指向人类。
thinking about“思考”、caring about“关心”、learning from“从……
根据前文“A living language always grows and changes over time”的线索,语言发展的典型特征是新增词汇。kick“踢”、count“数数”、leave“离开”均与语言词汇的发展逻辑无关。
